To be honest, the reason you're doing as 'poorly' as you are now is simply because you're doing more the Castle-style gauntlet rather than the heads-up style of the more regular Maverick/RM battles. It's one thing to make a mix and compare it to a single other mix. It's a whole different ballgame when everyone's mixes are compared against everyone else's mix. You'd be surprised - your mixing style would have a very good chance to win out over other mixes that are currently winning in this round if it were done in a heads-up fashion. I seriously doubt there's a popularity contest going on in here, not by the way everyone's been voting every round. There are just that many great tracks to vote against. Especially this round - there wasn't a single 'poor' remix on the bill, this time. The competition is amazingly tough, even from the people that are unknowns. Besides, if it WERE a popularity contest you'd be getting way more votes, 'cause we all love you for the sigs.

For once I'm not competing with you personally so I'm looking forward to it

finished Scary Docks and Nice Redcoins (FINISHED kINDA!)
Gario replied to SonicThHedgog's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
There's a lot of heat on your squares and they pierce too much, causing pain to your listeners. Round the sound of your square waves by lowering the EQ in the upper mids to highs. The beginning is pretty neat, with the drums + melody (though it should introduce a bassline somewhere in there - it's too hollow for too long). There's a lot of wasted potential in there, though, since you do not return to any of the ideas presented in that section. Ultimately, it's cool, but unfortunately disconnected to the rest of the song. If you reintroduced some of it later into the song it would be incredibly effective. The arrangement is pretty repetitive. I hear the effects that break it up, and all, but overall it's just the same section of the source repeating over and over. And over. I think you could get away with it, but I really recommend exploring some more of the source to break the monotony of the track. I like the dirty effects, and the production is pretty good. This track isn't bad, really, but I suspect it would get a 'RESUB' from the panel, if you were to submit it as is. It just seems too monotonous to keep people's attention past the first minute or two. Make the arrangement more varied and make the square wave less painful to listen to and you'll probably be in good shape for submission. -
Super Mario Bros. Opera (catchy as fuck)
Gario replied to LuketheXjesse's topic in General Discussion
Agreed, this is indeed the best thing. -
Even if you agree with Jack's message, this is still not the right place to post it. His subject matter is not about SOPA but about copyright itself. People are not here to talk about copyright again, but to discuss this current law that may or may not come into effect. Quite honestly I might like to discuss what Jack has to offer, but this is not the right place to do so, and thus I've avoided pushing the topic further. If anyone wants to have an intelligent discussion on it, make a new PPR thread about it - that forums been dead for a while anyway, may as well bring something up that'll spark it back to life again. I'm not disregarding his message for the sake of it - I'm disregarding it because I would like this thread to continue on it's intended trajectory. Please, if anyone wants to continue their Jack-off-topic discourse make a new thread about it in PPR. This isn't PPR, so I'm not going to have a PPR discussion about it here, and we shouldn't be expected to, either.

finished WCRG - Gario - Magnet Man vs Wily 1-1
Gario replied to Gario's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The bass is as loud as it can physically go, now; any louder and the bass clips in an incredibly abrasive manner. There's some minor sidechaining against the drums which kills some of the volume, but as far as what the bass is it's physically as loud as most others on OCR. It's not an acoustically complex bass, so it doesn't have as much presence as other songs might, but stylistically that's not what this song calls for, either. Hopefully it's enough. I further adjusted the highs on the track (there was a master that was artificially raising them, funny I didn't think to turn it off earlier), and I've tinkered more with the main lead's envelopes that were causing a lot of sonic grief. I touched on some of the panning, though not too much. It's the only way I could fit as much stiff in here as I have while keeping most of the parts pretty clear. I hope it's enough toning down, here. Alright, I think it's had enough tune up - I'll submit tomorrow, barring nothing else is really wrong with it. Thanks for the help, guys. -
The Damned's post pretty much makes Jack's return worthwhile. Alright, back on topic: has anyone seen SOPA/PIPA's reasoning behind removing due process from copyright enforcement? I heard about the whole bypass of due process everywhere, read the bill and found it to be true. I really, really want to know what pro-SOPA/PIPA people would have to say about the blatant breach of the 5th amendment.

We still don't agree with your positions on copyright, Jack, and no, people don't think that this was an 'inevitable outcome' of copyrights, but rather a power struggle with the middle man. Despite what you believe, people saw this one coming from miles away. The only surprise that came to any of us was that it's gotten as far into congress as it has. Correlation does not equal causation, so no, this event does not validate your position (or Lawrence's position, for that matter) like you'd want to believe. Maybe you should learn a little bit about basic logic before posting something like this. By the way, waltzing into a thread and calling everybody on the site a moron, or wait, as you put it... ... alright, yeah, everyone, isn't the best way to push any position, even if it were correct. It just makes you look like an immature twelve year old who just learned how to use online forums for the first time, and everyone else will treat you as such. If you want any intelligent discourse on it, respond in a manner that doesn't denigrate other members on the site. You get brownie points if you actually make your responses in the appropriate threads (or even make a new one to fit your ranting) rather than derail the current one with your thoughts. Or not. Fuckall if anyone cares about you past the point that you're trolling and breaking the thread (making fun of other members to get a response is a form of 'trolling').

Really getting into the spirit of the competition, eh?

No, it's not tolerated. This isn't "America", it's a website. The site has a right to restrict speech for the sake of peace. EDIT: That's a helluva ninja, man.

Go go Rokko Chan! Mega Man fans will love this one.
Gario replied to Gario's topic in General Discussion
The keyboard setup is balls, I admit, but once you get around that it's pretty damn good. Worth it to get used to the abysmal controls, imo, or map it to a joypad. -
Great piano work, guys - it has all of the right embellishments, great overall tone and some very nice integration of the themes. Knowing that Evory is a competent pianist himself, it's interesting to see him simply score a piece for Doc Nano to perform. Very well done, you two. I hope to hear more from you guys.

wip Zelda LttP Light Dungeon Hard Rock remix
Gario replied to jabond23's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Huh, I was just thinking a few days ago 'Wonder where Jabond23's been off to, lately?'. Interesting coincidence, I've got to say. Going to say this right off the bat, the synths and guitar don't match up, harmonically. If you move all of the synths up a whole step (or two half steps) it should work out much better for you. Try that out and listen to the result - it should sound significantly better. It's hard to judge the quality of the track right now, because the off kilter nature of the harmony is very distracting. I'll come back and see if I can help you more when that's lined up properly. -
Ouch, I was trying to check it out, and the link doesn't work for me.

Rokko Chan KyleJcrb posted this little gem on Facebook, and I've got to say it's pretty sweet. If you're used to Mega Man (and I know you all are) the jumping physics can take some getting used to, but otherwise it's a pretty wonderful (and unofficial) free Mega Man game. Go check it out.

The OCR Facebook page updates it's users whenever there's a new track. If you 'like' that page you'll get pretty regular updates on the site.

finished WCRG - Gario - Magnet Man vs Wily 1-1
Gario replied to Gario's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Alright, I fixed the thingies you told me about, and it sounds even better. If anyone else has commentary, just let me know The old link has been updated with the new shiznat. -
I'm thinking of subbing this one, since I haven't subbed anything to OCR since March, and I'd like to start getting more awesome musics onto the site again Any suggestions on this one? Drag Me Up (to Heaven) It's adjusted a bit from the one on the WCRG compo, btw, so download it fresh here. I felt like I ran out of time on the compo version, so this one has a couple of neat tweaks that I originally intended to make it more interesting. Enjoy, and let me know what should be fixed in it

The Newbie Introduction Thread: Come on in and say hello!
Gario replied to Mahaboo's topic in General Discussion
Hey, if you go from 'Newbie' to 'Proffesional' in several years... that's not such a bad pace to work at. I hope we can help you make that 'several year' goal happen at OCRemix. -
Alright, let's see what we've got here. First the good - the gated train is awesome. The glitches are excellent. The bass is really phat, and juicy (and sort of reminds me of Genesis synthesis). The drums are well placed. The arrangement is quite good, on top of all of that. The pad used at 0:56 just doesn't work. I agree that you need a pad there, but the one chosen just has too many harmonic partials to sound good at all. Use a cleaner pad there and the chords will sound much better. There are times where the melody doesn't quite punch through as much as I'd like (the synth at 0:20). It sounds alright in the beginning, but over the rest of the track it's just too thin to push past the rest of the track. Adjusting the highs on the EQ for it would help, as well as adding some reverb. With all the other awesome sound you have going in this track, I think you'd be able to fix this, no problem. ... yeah, I really like what you have going here, otherwise. Nice work on the improvements, and sorry for the late response - Christmas stuff and all.

wip MM7/MM1 - Shade Man's Tower (ShadeMan's Stage/Wily Tower)
Gario replied to Cyril the Wolf's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Alright, sorry about that - relistening to it now. Drums are a little more varied, some of the instrument choices are better (more of that cool synth I likes so much, there's a new sine that fits really well, too). The harpsichord is better in this version, too (though a bit more release would still be ideal). I noticed some spots where the chords fill out, which was nice. I think most of my crits still hold though. Drums are a little more interesting, but they could be more interesting still. The bass (not drum - I'm assuming the thin bass drum is intentional to the style, for right now) still needs some more strength. I hear improvement in the chordal portions in some of the song, but I'd like to hear more of that. It's better, but there's still more to go. Good luck, mang. -
"The purchase can wait, emulate!" On topic, that game just crucifies Megaman X. The graphics are awful, the backstory is wholly unnecessary, the whole 'shop' aspect... Damn, how could they get MMX so wrong?

wip MM7/MM1 - Shade Man's Tower (ShadeMan's Stage/Wily Tower)
Gario replied to Cyril the Wolf's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Ooo, from the compo. Well, since I have the compo version on my comp, I'll listen to that one (if this one is different let me know). I've got to comment on the Harpsichord, here. I understand that you like the dry soundscape, but that particular instrument needs to resonate. Not because it would sound better, but because the Harpsichord has no dampening system so it sounds incredibly odd to hear the notes die instantly. This is less 'reverb' and more 'add release to the sample'. Sounds like we're going for a 'BOOM-bada-BOOM-bada' sort of bass/drum combo (I like onomatopoeia descriptors). If you're going to go for this route, please give the bass more bass. Sounds like the bassline only covers the lower mids, when it could (and needs to) be covering a much deeper range. Give that bass some volume, and when the bass starts going over the bassline give it a little (or a lot, pending on the style) of sidechaining to compensate. The chords are a bit lacking. The pads only cover single notes in the chords, which make the track sound hollow. I really like the synth at 1:07, though, so keep him as he is. Give the other pads some more notes to play. Much like in metal, you want to have the drums do interesting things. If you want to keep the untz going, that's fine, but have fun with the hats, possibly the snare, put in some fills, etc.. While it's not an issue now (due to the relatively quiet soundscape) you'll want to look into making the snare more pronounced, especially when it comes to the high EQ on it. I suspect that's a sample issue, though - look for some more full snare samples to use. It sounds like you had fun making the Wily theme into a Shademan-like style, and I notice some very nice subtleties to the arrangement. I hope some of this critiquing is enough to get started working through the track. -
Probably would've been more appropriate in the Originals section and/or Community, possibly. That being said, this is awesome, as usual, Rushjet. Glad to hear you're still in the business of awesome. Only complaint would be that the album is short overall, but it's still great for what's here.
