Don't post your thoughts here until the voting stage is done - you could influence everyone else's vote . Otherwise, yeah, this was a pretty damn good round... Sorry about the rough recording on mine - my mic is crap (also, I started rather late 'cause I've been busy ). Good job, all.
-
Alright, my mix is up. Enjoy the power of collaboration with Eruigi and I!
-
Hey, hey - I'm working on it! I'm collaborating with someone on it, though, so be patient! I don't know how it'll compare with everything else, because I don't listen to other music when I'm in a compo (as it often gives me an ear worm which hampers me, overall), but it's coming along rather nicely, now. I'll get it done before the deadline, don't you all worry.
-
I never agreed to scrap it - I'm glad he put it up again. Unfortunately I'm not in a condition to listen to anything, right now (just did about 6 hours of labor in ~100 degree weather - yuck) but maybe I'll get on it in a few hours.
-
Yes, but if he moves on to something else, Neblixsaber, he might be able to learn something faster than if he wrestles with a song he is at a deadlock with, too. There's some give and take with this situation.

If I didn't put where I live in my profile, I'd say you wouldn't know where to look, Will... Damnit! I can't believe I'd do such a thing .

Huh, it sounds like, as you said, Mitsuda doing the soundtrack for a Golden Sun remake for the Playstation . It's quite nice. If I recall the source correctly, it's basically the same as this, right? The production and such is very good, and the treatment of that source is nice, but I also can guarantee that OCR would not accept this, as they want to see some creative interpretation in it, as well (If you didn't write it for OCR, then there's no problem, for sure). If you continue into something that is more liberal with the source then I don't see too much of a problem with it, for OCR purposes (I personally like the sound of those bongo drums - they just seem a touch too close to the foreground, to me). Keep working on this, though - if you plan on doing more with this theme I'm listening . EDIT: Oops, the source is right there, lol. I didn't see it .

That makes me the last one... I guess I should get started on it, huh?

No, Youtube is a collage of blathering idiots that can never agree on anything, so if even the idiots can all agree that it's a bad idea then it must be pretty damn obvious.
-
*An echo of a hammer hitting a nail* Yeah, when Youtube actually says in unity that it's really stupid without any idiots dissenting, that's a pretty bad sign. CN cannot recover from such an act - they will become something else like 'The Hanna Barbara Network' or some shit. Goodbye, CN, and all it was worth...
-
Your welco... What the fuck is that in your sig!? That's scarier than shit! EDIT: Damn, it's gone, now... lol.

When you say 'Original' I'm assuming you mean 'Something no one has ever done before'. Of course, no one will appreciate it at the time, but that doesn't mean people will appreciate the music later, either. That is a scholastic misconception that I have heard in my years in music theory - it simply isn't true for the majority of cases (I'm sure you haven't heard of 99.9% of the composers that have tried to 'revolutionize' music in the past 60 years ). Besides, you music isn't 'original' - it's heavily based on a musical style that's been around for over 100 years . It's actually rather conservative, all things considered . Read Webern's 'A Path to New Music' on that subject - you'll find that the road to modern music was, in fact, a very slow one that took quite a bit of time to develop (taking baby steps, each time). The only reason contemporary music of today seems to be going so fast is because people are now trying to make new music rather than let it flow naturally from point to point. The giant leaps of today actually hurt the process of appreciation, overall - if people didn't appreciate the steps from before yet how can they appreciate the steps building off of those? I think we're starting to get to a point today where very late-romantic music is now generally accepted by the public, so soon they may be able to listen to Schoenberg/Bartok/Stravinsky without too much trouble (they are the inevitable next step from that). Unfortunately, contemporary music of today isn't even being written to be listened to by most people, anymore - so those that write music today don't take any of that into consideration; rather, they're often happy writing it off as people simply not 'understanding' the music and move on, which is rather sad. New composers should try to listen to what the mst radical point people can listen to is, then build off of that, allowing people to have a chance to follow the music and appreciate it's changes (that's why music could evolve in the fashion that it did, before - now, evolution in that fashion is impossible, so no one will ever appreciate contemporary music of today, unless they train their ear specifically to do so).Your music isn't that radical, though - I encourage people to listen to it a few times through and try to listen to the themes you have in there. It's clean enough for that - they'll catch on to it, given the time . Onto the music... I don't know the source at all (I've played wow, but I don't listen to Tinkertown's music very ofter ). Actually, it's well connected, from a thematic point of view, but I find it to be a bit repetitive, towards the end ('harmonically', anyway). The arch form you use connects the piece well enough, but I think you could play around with the sets you use a little more at the end (I hear a lot of class 1 dyads and class 4 dyads (and class 3 & 5, as a biproduct) - very nice, but if you can find clever ways to introduce more of the other dyads in there it may help make the music a little less repetitive). Then again, unity in music like this is quite difficult to achieve, so I can understand what your doing with this - I appreciate your work, and you've done a fine job putting this together. I guess putting in more variety may hurt your chances with people here, considering they say it's not coherent enough, lol. I will say, though - expand the '4-7-4-0' motif you have going there (using pitch classes to identify it - I can't think of another way to put it) rather than repeat it like you do - it beats me in the head a little bit . Try inversion, retrograding, augmentation, etc. (although there is a good chance you do that already - I only listened to it like three times so I don't have the full scape of sound down yet) - there's just too much unaltered use of that theme in the song. It sounds more like regular atonal music based off of Forte's theories rather than Messiaen (you hear music like this a lot in composition recitals and such - people form themes and variations around small set classes). Shame on you, lol. It would be interesting to see if something like this could ever be accepted on OC - seeing how an all percussion piece was recently accepted, I could see it as a possibility, sometime soon (and that's saying something for OC). By the way, I have no clue how I could miss an atonal post in the WIP forums - I've been looking for one forever .

wip "Bush Grass" (Cave Story - On To Grasstown)
Gario replied to spellmynamewithabang's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Holy crap - Grass town was my favorite track on that game (and that's saying something - the whole game had really good music). Don't disappoint me on this . I like the sounds your using - they fit well with the genre. The melodic echoes seem rather bland in the beginning - check out what the guy did with the echoes in the game. They diminuendo and hard pan to each side to create some interest in them. Perhaps you don't need to do the same thing, but leaving them to repeat like that detracts from the music. That base that enters later is... off. The different harmonies are interesting, but most of the time it clashes with the texture (which sounds like it's from the game). Either make the bass follow the texture or have the texture follow the bass better, because it just sounds off, harmonically. Thank god you left the transition from the intro to the core of the song - that's one of my favorite parts of the source . The production is a bit bass-heavy (and lower mid heavy), so you may need to lower that in the EQ of the music. It's a bit conservative, even with the changes to the harmonies. Try tinkering with the structure of the music a bit more - that should give you the variety you need. Overall, not too bad, but it could use some work. I hope this helps! -
Oh, I didn't study the lyrics enough. My bad .

VG Music Analysis (Come on down! Discuss Theory!!)
Gario replied to Gario's topic in History & Study of Video Game Music
Cripes, I was going to post something I wrote a while ago that shows the functionality vs ease of reading, but I lost my files for it... I'll need to scan it in order to show it ... and where is that translation, AnSo? Also, +1000 posts (Megaman is the best)! Woot, now I'ma in the 4 digits - it'll take me ten times longer to get to 5 digits . -
Please tell me you were watching the wrong channel - showing slamball on CN would be the final nail on the coffin for CN. Not that I can watch it anymore (I haven't had cable in over six years), but the very thought of that makes me sick.

Ah... it's blank. I was going to check it out, too. Sadness. Rozo, the lyrics were from the source - which indeed made it sound like a kid's cartoon . I can see your point for the remix, though .

wip Rockman & Forte ~ New Beginning New Path
Gario replied to Dj Mokram's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Don't worry about the source usage, Rozo - he's pretty much got that down; not too much nor too little . I have mentioned the hard panning on the percussion before, I think - it doesn't help what you've got going, djMokram. Center the percussion more. The drums sound a little overcompressed when the guitar enters. That's not normally a bad thing, but in the context of this song it doesn't work... and the snare towards the end is a little too much in the front (and too dry). The production is good, but it still sounds like you could increase the upper EQ a bit to make the music clearer. The samples sound fine to me, though (except for that snare at the end, but I think with some adjustment you can make it work). Hey, this song has an ending! Neat. It sounds like it sort of fizzles out, though - after that first horn recap I imagine it exploding in heroic glory... I guess we have different interpretations of the music there. Your song, though; I can't tell you to change it . Not much else to add... except it could use an increase in volume . Keep it up - and I'm glad you've survived your great computer crash (although I'm still sad you couldn't participate in that ORC compo ). -
YES! A bloodlines remix! This soundtrack seriously needs some more attention on this site, as it has one of the best soundtracks ever (up there with 'Contra Hardcore' with completely unappreciated awesome soundtracks). It sounds unfinished and unpolished at the moment (and I agree, the intro wasn't particularly impressive), but I can see this going into something very nice where you faded it out (that's not the ending, right?). The lead is a little weak, but it works, right now. The music is pretty straight forward, right now, but it sounds like your building up into something that will be your own, so I'll wait before I start complaining . A solid mix, right now, and it will get better by the sounds of it. You get extra points for remixing this game, though - I've always wanted to do a remix of the third level, but Reason 3 will not support my ideas for it, at the moment, so I've got to wait until I upgrade my DAW or change it completely (level 3 is one of the most complicated tracks in video games, in my opinion). Keep it up - I want to hear this finished.

Woa, I didn't know Strike911 made so much trance! Sweet, thanks for the link, abg .
-
I can really see you doing something amazing with this, Jabond... Get on it!
-
Good suggestion, Gollgagh. By the way, here is where it says no favorites - it's hidden in the 'Newbies' section .
-
This. C'mon, even if it IS terribly slapstick and cheap, it's gotta make you laugh at least a little...
-
Favorites, eh? I'm sure this'll be closed soon (read the forum rules - no 'favorites' threads ), but my favorite on this site is bLiNd's Top Gear 2 song 'Dance Nation', at the moment. Pure gold, that is (and I never even played the game before). Actually, anything from bLiNd is excellent... FFDJ is pretty good, too .
