  1. Actually, that's exactly why I don't like this one as much - the rhythm is a bit too cliche, whereas your other mix had a lot of personality and uniqueness in it's rhythms... so I've gotta say I disagree with DS on that opinion . Not really, I think the wet sound suits it fine. It's in D, eh? The chord progression is i (dm) - VII (CM) - v (am) - i (dm), throughout most of it, with little change up. When listening for a chord progression listen to the bass - that holds the most significant note harmonically (not always the root, but it sets the harmonic mood). You can often discern the qualities of the chords by looking at the melodies and textures of the chords (in this case you actually can't tell the quality by that alone - but the outlining of a minor progression lead me to the conclusions that I have). Because the harmonies don't change very often through the mix it tends to get stale, after a while - try using different harmonizations with the thematic material your using, it'll make it more interesting. Hope that helps. As for the empty sound, I think its the relatively constant use of your instruments - the texture of the music is rather static, as is. Change it up . The music isn't bad - it just gets a little repetitive after a point. Change it up more often and you should be in good shape. Keep at it!
  2. Dude, you so need a reverse galloping bassline under that, in the beginning. Otherwise, nice shredding track you got. The drums are rather lame throughout some of it (thump thump CRACK thump... when you change it up it's better, but every time that's in the track it drives me INSANE!). The notes at 1:10 and 1:35 - 1:36 just sound wrong, there, so if your able to fix them that would be great. The reason it sounds like your bass is already covered is because the second guitar seems to cover the bass' job. Unfortunately, it also could use some bass for filling the soundscape more - that part of the spectra isn't covered adequately, making the metal sound a bit empty. Great solos, incredible source (that really, really needed some metal attention) and some decent metal you've got going there. I loved this track in the game, and I'm glad your giving it the attention it deserves.
  3. And counting . I can, but it takes the file over 6mb. Even 160 bit rate takes the file over a bit, so the next step down (128 ) takes it under the limit, but it hurts the sound, sadly. If anyone knows of a program to convert the original wave to a variable bit rate I'd appreciate it - it could probably sit well at 144 or something.Actually, Reason exports the file into wave (1411 bit, or uncompressed sound), but OCR won't accept it due to the file size. Thanks for the offer to export it, but the problem lies in the file size after exporting it, not the bit rate, necessarily. Actually, I sort of know... If you know the genre that I have, could you let me know? I'm terrible at labeling the genre of my music (seriously, I have no clue what the genre of this is - this is the sound you get when you give a classically trained composer some electronic sounds, lol). I'll tinker with the ending a little before I sub, I guess - I agree it's a little lackluster and that I'm not fully satisfied with it.Thanks for the input, guys!
  4. BUMP! No comments on the last version? Either that's a really good thing or a bad thing, I dunno... Another update for you all - I changed the ending yet again . There is a transition that I've improved, and the production quality is better in this version (I reduced the popping considerably). Unless someone has any complaints about the music (except for the voice clips - they stay 'cause I love em') I'm going to submit this version - I'm quite satisfied with it. However, I feel that the 128 bit rate screws up the quality considerably. If someone knows of a free program that create Mp3s with variable bit rate, please let me know - I would appreciate it greatly.
  5. Cripes, what the hell, Ninja Gaiden II had too much blood? Video games didn't have blood back in the early days (the game only had blood in very few cut scenes, like when you kill Jaquio, or when Robert dies), so how could you say it had too much blood?! Great oldskool game, nonetheless - one of the great games on NES .
  6. ARGH! It's over 6mb! It'll never got on OCR with that, nor with chiptunes, or the medley, or... Wait, your not trying to get on OCR? Well then, that changes things, altogether... j/k - I know what your going for, and you do it very well. If Sam says it's amazing tracking then you have to sit down and listen to it... and I'm glad I did. Although it sounds a little too random, to me, you've certainly got talent in chiptune tracking, man. I thoroughly enjoyed it .
  7. Hmm... Well, as far as the arrangement goes it's top notch, and the orchestrating is quite good. Yes, it's very quiet, but if you listen to any classical CD it's about at the same dynamic volume so it could fit in perfectly with a Debussy album or even Mahler. Mind you, I believe that if your listening to classical music, you need to have it up loud enough to hear the quiet parts and let the loud portions blow your head off (no tweaking the volume, people!) - that's the only way to go, and this piece is great for that type of listening (other genres of music don't have this element, which is rather sad, but that's life). I do feel that the instruments don't sound very real, though, but it does the job well enough - the arrangement and dynamic play works well, making up for that one deficiency. Nice stuff!
  8. Hey, I just saw your Braincooler mix is going to be posted. Nice work on that one!

  9. Another Kefka mix - and one of the best on the site, to boot (and that's saying something - most of them on here are amazing). We can't expect any less from AnSo, though - he always comes through with some amazing music. Oh, and music box effects are just downright awesome, especially when used with Kefka. Listening to this was a perfect way to start my morning - that you, AnSo. Everyone should start their morning with this (a.k.a. go listen to it now, it's great!).
  10. I really, really miss my copy of Magix music studio - I only used the midi creator on it, but that was a top-notch midi studio (I had Magix 7, by the way). Those were the days... Your working on your mixing, now? That's a good idea - the music itself is quite good (I only listened to the track 'Breaking' - I don't think many people will listen to every track, nor would that benefit you 'cause they don't represent your current progress - Breaking would be your latest, correct?). The orchestration is pretty good, too, although I'd look into using some more woodwinds (they're pretty awesome ) - everything else is pretty well balanced, so the woodwinds is more of a personal preference than an actual problem . The mixing, though, does sound like it needs a lot of work, and the instruments really need to sound more realistic than they do, if you want this mix to really shine. I don't know how the EQing in Magix works, but in many other DAWs you'll be able to work with an EQ for every instrument as well as an EQ that affects the entire song (the 'master' EQ). When tweeking the EQ pay special attention to the high end area - this song sounds muffled because there is a lack of highs. The lower-mids could also be turned down to give the music some room to breath, there. There isn't any clipping right now, but be careful with your EQing - it can cause clipping if your not careful. As for the real instruments, you need to work with the velocities of the instruments so they don't all sound the same (the piano especially needs work, as it's uncharacteristic for a piano to have any two notes play at the exact same dynamic). The strings sound like they have far too much vibrato for too long throughout - lower the vibrato and don't have it start until about two beats into the notes. If it's the sample that is doing the vibrato, change it . Arrangementwise, it's very well crafted. The melodies are catchy and the harmonization works. When an instrument is playing the theme (like the horn does throughout the beginning(, you need to bring it out to the foreground better, as right now the piano and the strings drown it out. The melody is nice - it'd be great for the listener to be able to hear it better. Nice music, though. If you want comments directed towards your mixing and such I actually suggest mixing a VG song and posting it in the WIP forums. It gets a lot more traffic than this forum does, so you'll have more people listening to it and critiquing it than you will in these forums. Just a suggestion, though - there's no harm in just writing originals and posting here, instead (hey, you got at least one reply ). Welcome to OCR, by the way .
  11. Hey, nice bLiNd mix - I love it when he posts things in the WIP forums (He did this with another sonic song, not too long ago ). EDIT: Actually, bLiNd, some of the harmonies really clash with the textures your using towards the end, making me cringe a little. Otherwise, it's a great mix... Sorry, I couldn't help myself - it's the WIP forum, after all . As for your mix, Skyway, nice for three hours of work - you'd hold a fine place with the OHC compos . However, past the initial build there is no sense of direction in the music; it just sounds like it stays in the same place for the entire song. I'm not only talking about the source material - this extends to the drums, the bass pattern, the lack of change in the soundscape, etc. It sounds pretty good for a little while while, but it cannot hold my interest for longer than a minute before I start getting bored. Rozo's got the other points covered, so that's what I've got to say about this . Not bad at all, though.
  12. A Fistful of Metal... That works nicely - the J's better not complain about your title, this time . Really, I think it's in great shape, but the lack of change in the timbre of the lead irks me towards the end of the song. It's great for most of the music, but if you don't change it up at least once in the music it wears the listener down (like it did for me). There are a lot of opportunities in the mix where you could do that and have it work very well, so it shouldn't be a difficult fix. The notes are great, as they very a whole lot - I'm just talking about the timbre. The soundscape has filled out very nicely since I listened to it before - the bass of the song is a little weak, but I don't believe it's detrimental to the music, so you can make a judgment call for that. That's about all that I can see with the song that could hold it back from being posted. I like it quite a bit, otherwise .
  13. Hah! I'm back, and I want to take a more personal approach to this very famous song from FFVII. The scene link is , but if you don't want to ruin this scene (if you never played FFVII and plan to) then I'd suggest not watching it, nor reading the rest of this post (of course, I think virtually everyone knows about this scene, so whatever...).Yeah, this scene is probably the most touching scene in RPG history, but there are a few factors about the music, the timing and such that really create a unique atmosphere in this scene - in fact, whenever I hear the music and watch this scene it really feels like the climax of the entire FF franchise. Why would I say that? Alright, lets take a look at just the first phrase (in fact, that is the only phrase I'm looking at) - the notes are (CDE) - G - C (the notes in the parantheses are played as a cluster). Woo, a C major chord with an added D, right? Nothing special... until you realize that this is the very chord used in the prelude of every - the very first chord, in fact. Not only does the Aeris theme use the same notes, but it ascends in almost the exact same fashion, although it only reaches one octave. The fact that there is a chord cluster that is struck first further intensifies the effect. The timing of the materia striking the ground and the striking of the first cluster in the music accents the music in an artless fashion, and the impact of the scene itself (both visually and emotionally) compliment everything perfectly. My interpretation of the scene, then, is that the Death of Aeris is the culmination of every Final Fantasy up to that point, as it is the most intense subject matter (your love interest dies - no other FF had done that, to that point, nor ever does that again, to my knowledge), the visuals were epic (well, for the time, anyway), the music was a variation of a theme that was (and is still) used in every Final Fantasy, and most importantly - every piece forms a whole that far surpasses the parts in intensity. It is almost operatic in how well everything forms, in the end. Yes, this is all because of the first chord (and only the first chord) - but the effect is so strong that it only needs that small relation to the Prelude to connect with it. I get goosebumps every time I watch that scene - every time. The way everything forms together really touches me in a way no other FF game can. Does anyone else feel that way about the music, there?
  14. Hmmm... I am not familiar with all of your sources enough to know what is from the game and what is not, so I can't help you with the arrangement quality. Actually, there isn't much that I can say that hasn't ben said already - the instruments and such sound a bit low quality, and the texture is relatively invariant throughout. It's not a bad mix, but there isn't anything that makes it stand out, either. Unlike your last remix (which I felt had a lot of character and personality behind it) this one seems rather mundane... It's not bad, but not spectacular, you know what I mean?
  15. I'm sure many, many bosses are being recycled throughout this thread - unless you really want to check and cross-check the entire thread of repetitions and such, I don't think we will ever know... Actually, screw this - I'm gonna go do that right now; see you guys in a couple of months . By the way, any boss in Amagon is insanely difficult if you are not the strong man (but I know it is possible - my oldest brother has done it, back in the day). Big creature comes straight for you, one hit is instant death, and it takes a shitload of bullets to take it down. Ah, I hated (and still hate) that game.
  16. This... and FF4 & 5 don't seem to hold the same appeal for me, either (although I still love FF6, but mainly for the incredibly rich soundtrack that may never be equaled and very awesome antagonist that has no better). I feel the Sonic games (the good ones, I mean) have really lost their appeal, as time has passed. I've been trying to play S&K up to the Sky Sanctuary for some ideas for music, but I can't get myself to play it past the first two levels...
  17. The Damned conversation... lol. Happy Birthday, you self-taucing ninja - and keep makin' the music... and making people look foolish in PPR .
  18. Hmm... what do you mean by that? His highs are too high, sure, but his mids aren't 'non-existent'... They are, in fact, relatively normal (when he brings down the highs the mids will come out more) - it's his lows that are completely lacking in this . If you mean something else, please clarify - I was confused by this, and I'm sure the remixer may be, as well... (otherwise, I agree with your criticism entirely ).
  19. Mwahaha, an update! I have to say, you must really love this song to be giving it as much attention as you have (it's always great to see people actually enjoying their own music ) That opening actually caught me off guard a bit (if it was in the last version I didn't see that update when you put it up - my bad). I like it, though - it's a great way to open it up. I noticed that there are virtually no low ends at all. The bass of the mix needs to come out a lot more - it's making the music sound very thin, without it (I'm not talking about the instrument, although giving it more bass might help; I mean the EQ spectrum, overall). Personally, I like the saw, but I'm not sure if it should be used throughout as often as it is - it's a little too screechy to hold the part too often. Try alternating it with another instrument with a smoother instrument from time to time; it'll keep the saw fresh and alleviate the screechy sound from time to time. The arrangement is a bit conservative, but I'm not sure if it's a problem - you do change things up enough in it, in my opinion... I think the musical direction of the song it quite nice . If you have personal doubts about it, though, I'd suggest moving in a more liberal fashion with the source. Nice tunage, though - the volume is nice and the soundscape is full of activity. Keep at it!
  20. Nice work on this - I'm enjoying it quite thoroughly. It's time we take DD off his Megaman throne and challenge his stuff with something fresh, like this. The arrangement is great so far, and the sounds are good. The mix sounds a little hollow, though - I think it's lacking in the bass and lower mids. Other than that it's sounding great - it's mixes like this one that keeps me coming back to the WIP forums so often .
  21. Woa, I didn't know you made these - they're great! I saw these for the first time quite a while ago and had no idea you made them (and I liked the others you did, too, by the way ). Keep em' comin'!
  22. Umm... how many people didn't chose A? By the way... A - My skills in production has skyrocketed since I've become a member. Now, whether that's because it has encouraged me to remix more, thus forcing me to use my programs more and such or from the helpful advice on my mixes... I think it's a nice mix of both things happening . Yeah, I'd say this site has helped quite a bit, either way .
  23. DAMN YOU! Why weren't you born back when they could've incorporated the music into the old NES games? These are all amazing, damnit, and I sure as hell would've been remixing them today!
  24. That's 'cause it was too loud, like you said before; I turned them down almost immediately, lol. UPDATE! I've done a lot of extra texture work, in order to take the repetitiveness out of the track, changed the drum and bass work dramatically (although the hats are basically the same - if it's noticeable please tell me), replaced a few instruments that didn't belong in some areas. The ending is quite different, although I'm not sure if I'm satisfied with it... I might extend the parts that I cut down to half-time back to what they were - if anyone has ideas on that part let me know . Enjoy!
  25. http://neblixsaber.googlepages.com/R...iritTemple.mp3 Yes, I have, and it's still a bit too quiet - it should be a bit louder than that. If that's not the new version then you don't have it posted here. I'll say it's close, and you might be able to get away with it as is... so you can make the call, if you'd like (hell, your brother could make that call better than I, so you can ask him about the volume). It's close, but I feel it's erring towards the quiet side, still. 2-3 more dbs would make it just right. Perhaps I'm being picky - see if DS agrees with me, there; I'd like to know if I'm accurate about this assesment. Yup, that would do it... not too much, though . Texture - it refers to the patterns that you use in order to fill the space ('Block Chords' are a type of texture, while an arpeggio is another texture). You alternate between few textures in order to keep the space filled, which makes it sound repetitive when it actually is not. Look at the bass, for example - you use that wonderful bassline that imitates the ocarina melodies so well, but you overuse that shape/texture of the bass, as it only changes once in the song. Change the patterns that fill the space up a little more often and you'll find the music to be much more engaging than it is now (and it's pretty engaging now, so imagine if it was even more so?). The texture is the real problematic issue with the song, at the moment - if you subbed it that would be the central complaint, right now. Vary the textures better throughout and you may have a serious contender, here. Good luck with that .
