  1. Best thing to do here is to wait for opportunities to arise and jump at them when they do. I did and I was ultimately successful, and have since composed music for edgebee studios as a result (critter forge and swords and potions if you want specifics). Basically, go find the work, rather than hoping the work will find you
  2. You've marked this for mod review so here goes: Mod Review First thing i'm going to say is the source. Holy fuck its good. Its not usual that you hear someone remix a source like this so props on the ambition. Opens up with a violin that sounds out of place compared to the rest of the song. I'd consider dropping that part, it doesn't fit with the rest of the song. The piano sample itself isn't all that great tbh i've heard much more convincing piano samples before, this sounds like a toy in comparison. I'd consider trying to either 1: get your hands on better samples through someone else helping you - or getting someone to play this with their own samples for you, there are plenty of people on OCR who can get the sort of quality that would be needed here. The arrangement from what I can tell is pretty neat, altho it could use some work in execution. The writing seems cool but i'm not hearing much dynamic range throughout (interesting the person below me said he could hear dynamic range - i'm not hearing nearly as much as i'd like) and you could really go all out on a piece like this and make it incredibly dynamic. The panning of the piano is off-putting as well - like the others have said, the two hands need to be centered, atm, it sounds like you've got two pianos, one on either side of you, one playing left hand and one playing right. Center the piano parts. The playing while ok, every now and then seems to go slightly out of time, you need to work on your tightness when playing but that isn't a main concern for me. So to recap everything: Violin part needs removing, Needs more realistic piano sample, needs more dynamic range, center your panning, try to tighten up performance. Sorry if I seem like i'm giving you a fuckload of negatives - I'm just trying to tell you what you need to do to realize this tracks full potential, and right now, you've got a fair bit of work cut out for you before this hits OCR standard. Keep working at it tho!
  3. Hey I remember you from that Sonic Tribute mix you subbed... yeah it didn't pass but I remember it got around a little on OCR, a fav of quite a few people in the rejected mixes category, which is pretty impressive Nice stuff there as well, dig it. As a fellow composer I hope I get all your jobs (jk good luck dude ) However, stuff like this doesn't belong in this thread i'm afraid. If you want to post originals or remixes, post them in the appropriate forums (Post your Remixes/Originals) or put links in your sig
  4. Ok, I've just gone through the whole thread. I would say that exposure of general mixes compared to regular is an issue. If you go to last.fm and look up any OCR artist who's on an album, the album mixes are the most popular, and specifically, the album versions (the OCR versions have different titles and are thus separate on Last.fm). That says to me that this is a valid concern. Also, Albums do get different forms of exposure, the staff post on game forums etc. I'm disliking most of these solutions with the exception of the icon idea and the roulette exposure idea, because things like staff picks, getting rid of tracks from the russian roulette extra is showing unfair bias against OCR specific versions of album mixes. Like Level 99 says, albums are different to mixposts, there is room for both. I think people are looking at this from the wrong angle. Alot of people seem to think that changing stuff on OCR itself is the way to solve the issue, but this issue is stemmed from promotion outside of OCR imo, which means changing things on OCR alot of people wouldn't see anyway. The only way to make it fair would be to promote all the mixes the same way, if that means giving promotion for regular mixes, or taking the album promotion away. Even if all the albums and mixes are promoted the same amount in the same way, albums would probably be more popular, simply because they are albums... if its just as easy to download an album, people will go down that route. Its bigger, more exciting than a single track, and its bound to get more people interested, particularly if its from a Game series they like. What you going to be more excited about? One Sonic Mixpost, or Sound of Speed? You'd most likely share the album if given the choice right? Dunno if there is a good solution to this problem. Albums will be albums and mixposts will be mixposts I guess. As for the Teaser/ZIP debate, I agree with Neblix and DJM, thats effectively making them albums, if thats the intention from the idea or not. Also Rozo, I <3 you man, but there is no need for the sarcasm with DJM, he put forward some good feedback on your ideas and you basically laughed at him because he didn't agree with you. Sorry if i'm making an example of you, but this is getting borderline heated right now with your discussion with neblix. I'd just like to say - and this goes out to everyone in the thread - just try and keep a polite disposition here cause this is the sort of thread that people can start a potential flame war in, don't give yourselves a reason to start one
  5. Round 10???? Thought there were only 9 rounds because that way, everyone is doing 3 mixes each... how many rounds are there in this compo?
  6. This is shaping up to be the most rushed and most shit track i've ever done I'm contemplating subbing this tbh, I've got alot of work to do in about an hour and a half and atm it doesn't look like its worth the trouble judging how its turning out hahaha. I SHALL DO IT FOR THE GOOD OF MY TEAMMATES HOWEVER, ANY VOTE IS WORTH IT.
  7. Sampled music sucks. Its almost as bad as remixes of VGM. Just Kiddin,g ove it real
  8. OA sent me this and I thought i'd just chime in that I thought this was solid. The performances were stronger, and while it sounds a little rough generally on the production the production was generally ok. It seems to lack the polish overall but its not something I can pinpoint or tell you how to fix really The only major issue I had was that the flute was piercing - I think its in the 2k to 4k range but don't quote me on that. From what I could gather, OA couldn't hear that issue so it shouldn't be a big problem if you can't fix it. Regardless, my stance on this was it was similar to my Slowpoke Shuffle mix - not down right WOW OMG AMAZING, but if you subbed it, i'm fairly sure it would pass. OA agreed with me, so I'd say try and fix that flute frequency issue and sub this beast. Good luck
  9. I agree with everything here except this: If? IF?? We put on a show for you, you slimey ungrateful gits! Not to mention it was the first international OCR appearance EVER. So you should count us! Seriously tho, not a bad year overall, well done everyone!
  10. And my performance! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6r5oovTl_KQ Special thanks to Lidawg who recorded this - awesome
  11. I'm kinda seeing both sides of the argument here, but it is certianly true that albums do distract from regular mixposts, if they're from the album or not, thats a fact as far as i'm concerned. While I do agree with Level 99 that we shouldn't show a bias for regular mixposts on the site, the fact that the albums get 10X the promotion from regular mixposts makes the regulars get pushed aside at that point. It works fine when there are very little album mixposts per year, but with nine released, its having a knock on effect because 1: album tracks don't get as much attention from both downloads and reviews as regular mixposts from what I can gather, and 2: the regular mixposts are getting pushed aside by the public because of the albums. As a result, anything thats posted as a mixpost on OCR this year is getting ignored either because people have too much to listen to Album wise, or they've already got it. For sure, its a problem that will be resolved once the album backlog is cleared, but if the album backlog starts growing quicker than we can release the albums, (which seems to be an issue with mixposts right now as well) then we need to either try to A: promote mixposts more to give them more spotlight (Yes I know you don't want bias level 99, but atm, there is obvious bias for anything album related as it is so this would probably even it out) or try and decrease the album flow by introducing stricter deadlines or having a limit on how many albums OCR can take on at time.
  12. Ok, I've just got back from the gaming con. Basically, got to meet the following people: Fishy, Protodome, Rexy, Lidawg, and Andy P, all of which were awesome. So the panel went awesome. We got rid of all the merch (people were asking for more than we could give them ) and fishy and I both did performances with (as far as I could tell) good reception. The trivia went fantastic tho, the audience really got into it, and one of them even got the trick question of who remixed rabbit joint cover, which leads me to conclude that we had some OCR fans in the crowd Lidawg managed to get a recording of the panel iirc, so he might post that on youtube for people to see. We also played some bomberman (I bombed - no pun intended, fishy and proto were kinda cleaning house iirc) and I played some streets of rage with Proto, half the time we were trying to kill each other rather than the opponents as you do in that game... We also got to see brentalfloss do his slot, but we didn't get to meet him in person while I was there which was a shame, but was cool to see him in person. Overall, fantastic experience, and I hope we make this an annual thing
  13. Gotta say, I'm with fishy here. The OCR University thing, I didn't get at all. Found it weird tbh. I'd go with the instrument shirt but like Fishy says, I feel the OCR University shirt misrepresents OCR.
  14. I'll be arriving at the convention at about 12-12:30, i'm not meeting anyone at the station, circumstances changed regarding that. When I get there, I'll be chilling with the others till the time of the panel, altho chances are some of it before hand will be prepping so yeah.
  15. Nutritious is Remixing for the Block Rockmen Beats!
  16. I disagree. Typical vote usually comes down to popular vote, and people don't vote for the best tracks on the whole system overall. They vote for the best tracks on the system they will know of. I'm not saying MM2s Wily stage theme isn't good - it is - but because MM2 was a popular game to start off with, that helps increase the awareness of the track overall. Silver Surfer however, I am willing to bet was unknown to the masses until AVGN reviewed it, and even now, its under appreciated. Thats not the fault of the music, thats the fault of the game itself not being popular. I think most people would agree that Silver Surfers compositional creativity with the hardware is more unique and thus sticks out better, but Mega Man has better melodic content. This is irrelevant however because more people would say MM2 simply because they haven't heard the silver surfer theme before. Mega Man is a popular as fuck game franchise with iconic tracks for the system, therefore its safer to go with a familiar series for number 1. That doesn't make it the right choice, but the typical choice. For the record i'm not saying that Silver Surfer is the best on the nes. I haven't heard every track on the nes, but my point for going with a familar Nes track still stands. I doubt anyone would put something obscure like a Shadow of the Ninja track at 1 for example, even if they thought it was the best.
  17. SILVER SURFER FOR NUMBER 1 Come on is that not fucking OBVIOUS???? Seriously tho, I'd guessed what number one would be as soon as I opened the thread. Way for being overally typical with that theshizz, but I'm so happy Silver Surfer at least came top 5. That soundtrack is so underrated it hurts.
