  1. Björk's Post---known for "It's Oh So Quiet." i still don't know how that song trumps something like "Modern Things" which is a really terrific song. Jamie Cullum's Twentysomething, known briefly for its title track. i didn't know it when I bought the album, but pretty much every song on here has just so much heart and music in it. I love his cover of Radiohead's "High & Dry" and his song "All at Sea."
  2. Nice! Hopefully the quality of the animation is matched by the writing. About the music however, think of the music that has come out of Disney in the past---"Some Day My Prince Will COme" comes to mind. Sadly the people who wrote that stuff don't write for Disney any more...
  3. Same way i found it! I agree with you, most of the magic was in HM64 for me (FoMT was a good replacement, mostly because it was so deep) and I really loved Magical Melody, but i have very little patience for how slow everything moves...oh well. Good to see someone else loves HM64!
  4. I don't even remember when this happened, but it must have been, oh at the most 5 years ago. I was borrowing all the PSX Final Fantasy games from a pal to play over the summer. I started with FFVII. I remember always playing late at night, and getting thru the beginning of the game was real fun when it's all dark and quiet, but I remember about 2 AM I get to the first time you see JENOVA all weird and corpse-y...at that hour, it's incredible. Not terrifying, but I feel like I will remember it for a long time. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- - - -- - - - - - -- - - - - - -- - Playing LoZ:OoT makes me reminisce strongly. I bought it on a whim (what's so great about this Zelda thing? May as well try it...) and in particular playing through the Young Link part is very, very evocative of my younger days. --- - - - -- -- -- - - -- -- - -- - - - - - - Harvest Moon 64. I played this so much that I swear some of the area maps are engraved into my brain. The sound of the text advancing (especially in the events with no music) with the cheesy, badly transliterated, but still somehow effective dialogue makes me feel like I'm back in 4th or 5th grade.
  5. By the way, thank you for making that. One of my favorites on OLR...
  6. YES! This guy writes great stuff for big band...and he's the lead arranger for the Disney parks so I hear. Great, great great. If you're looking for more small jazz combo stuff look for some Charles Mingus or John Coltrane...2 of my faves. Ska-Reggae wise I like the Specials (but I'm not sure if they're Saka or Reggae...).
  7. Excellent work! Some very nice harmony/arrangement stuff here...especially the Gerudo Valley song with the 2/4 breaks in it!
  8. Holsinger's "Tom Tame the Perilous Skies." Oh man, that is the stuff.
  9. Please tell me what recording this is! I have a 35-minute version of Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Fran Symphony doing it, but I'm not sure if it's the right arrangement. I am a sucker for Copland and his harmonic style. <3 4ths
  10. Have you heard the Doráti recording of 1812 he did with the Minneapolis Symphony with the actual carillon and cannons? It's magnificent. But yeah, it's not really sobs. More like misty, hopeful eyes for the battle described in the piece.
  11. Sometimes the brass entrance in Tchaik's 1812 (you know...with the carillon and bass drum right after the string runs and before the iconic theme?) will do it for me. Edit: Oh, and other sorts of tears...some of the parts of Carmina Burana are tear-jerkingly terrifying. Olim Laucum Colueram and Ego Sum Abbas come to mind.
  12. Hoo boy, you guys made me remember a good one--- Playing Super Metroid when I was younger, I was just getting around to beating Mother Brain in all her jarred-specimen glory...when her second form came up. Ran out of the room promptly.
  13. Phantom was ridiculous amounts of awesome. From the slave rebellion till the end was nearly continuous applause. SCV got a screwy score...their show was phenomenal.
  14. Oh I love the synths they used in this game. Just hearing the sound set makes me go all nostalgic.
  15. Well, it's that time of year again. Quarterfinals are tomorrow, and I'm quite excited. I'm going to the local Regal to watch the live broadcast, and for a cheaper price I'll be getting better seats (and air conditioning!) than I got at DCI '07 at the Rose Bowl...we sat nearly in the end zone. I kinda got spoiled because i got to see Phantom rehearse at a local high school, and I don't think I'll ever forget the first time I heard them go all-out in rehearsal. Made me blink and . It was great. It was neat to have the perspective on their rehearsals as well. So, who are you guys rooting for this year? I used to be a die-hard Cadets fan (from their '05 show) but the direction they've been taking as of late...not my favorite. Phantom is doing well, and I think Carolina Crown is set for top 5 maybe! But I still think my favorites are the Blue Devils...their sound is great.
  16. "To Tame the Perilous Skies" by David Holsinger. It's a tone poem for wind band that describes a pilot's journey through a dogfight. Awesome!
  17. When I meant "flatten" the sound I didn't mean in terms of EQ, I think what I was trying to get across is that a ton of the punch is lost and there seems to be this...grey sort of sound over the audio when I use the canceling phones. I like the idea of changing the EQ's with the Denons though, maybe I'll give those a try.
  18. I'm more than a bit baffled as to why they would decide to do this now? I mean, the series ended its run in Japan back in '99. I guess the fairly recent mainstream attention the series has gotten in the US would warrant it, but still...
  19. My Sony MDR-7506s finally gave up the ghost---their earpads are falling apart resulting in everyone in a 6 foot radius being able to hear my music loud and clear. Soon enough they'll be unusable so I'm in the market for some new headphones. I really loved these and I would definitely buy another pair, but I'm wondering if you guys would recommend something that may be better. I loved the Sonys, they were nice and punchy and didn't mess with the overall sound of the media. I tried some pricey noise-canceling headphones but I always find they "flatten" the sound of music and everything gets lost. I prefer over-the ear sealed types, mainly for comfort, but I hear they compromise sound fidelity? I don't know. In short, does anyone have any recommendations for some good headphones (mainly used on an iPod) or setups (like with a headphone amp) that I could use, or maybe a place to try out some brands? Thanks a ton.
  20. Well, maybe if you want something with "limited fingering" you should give a (valved) brass instrument a try. although, I think you should really go for whatever instrument that you like the sound of the most---you'll be most motivated to play and you'll enjoy playing it more. I think the finger jitters you say you have might disappear with your mind focused on making music.
  21. Ah, this is similar to how I perceive music. Different colors, but they do follow a pattern---the flatter a key gets, the cooler and deeper the colors get, and the sharper, more bright and hot.
  22. PLASMA! I wish i could find a copy of this game...I love it so, and it would most likely be on my list as well... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hsmvNkYTwI&feature=related[/url*]
  23. I'm going to have to go with the favorite, Star Fox 64, and Kirby's Super Star. And as I was going thru my stack to jog my memory i saw Mischief Makers, which might soon join the list...
  24. Argon would be quite the powerhouse...very, very inert and resistant to reaction! /nerd:<
  25. Whew, I really like the interplay of the bass synth and the percolating synth at the beginning. Nice work keeping the feel consistent when it opens up at the end. I feel like there should maybe be a contrasting section in it, I think a contrast to the floaty, fat sound would be très effective. The timbres are again my favorite part...they just fit! This sounds like some modern wind band writing to me, and i don't know why.
