OCR01391 - Final Fantasy VIII "Moontang"
42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yeah, I can definitely feel that this has a Parisian cafe vibe, but towards the end, I'm getting an ethnic Russian vibe to it too. Maybe with a stop in Salzburg getting there, but I'm overthinking it at this point. >.> But it's the little things that make this interesting like the piano in the intro and the castanets and clapping. There's just a lot going on in this mix, and all of it is handled amazingly well. This is well worth a listen. -
I like the quirkiness of this mix; it just fades in as if its just wandering through the woods lost in its own little world and marching to the beat of its own drums, so to speak, and then just continues on its way. Speaking of drums, the beats here feels so trippily appropriate for dancing in a phantom forest. Overall, it's an interesting little mix, nothing too fancy but just ok. Edit: And I just now noticed that forest here is spelled "phorest". I feel that this is definitely significant.

OCR01135 - Final Fantasy VI "Battle Theme (Ivory Metal Mix)"

Most definitely this ^ The dynamics here are what make this mix fun to listen to; you can literally feel the urgency underlying this. It makes sense why this is called Ivory Metal. This is definitely a piece no one should miss. -
OCR01331 - Final Fantasy VI "Shadows Among the Ruins"

For some reason this mix isn't doing much for me. I think it's just trying to do too much at once. It's trying to be dark and foreboding, but there's just just too many upbeat elements to it. It has some interesting moments, like the intro, but ultimately it just winds up being ok. Definitely an interesting period piece though. -
OCR00772 - Final Fantasy VI "Phantom Midnight"

All this missing is some rain sound effects in the background. I can just imagine this being played as the incidental music as some film is panning and showing different parts of some ruined castle somewhere. The mood just matches perfectly: calm, antiquated, forgotten, contemplative. As such this is one of my favorite Final Fantasy 6 mixes hands down and on my playlist that I listen to as I go to sleep. -
OCR02060 - Mighty Morphin Power Rangers "It's Morphin Time!"

MORPHINOMINAL! Heck yes, this is totally rocking and really makes me nostalgic (for the show at least, I'm not that familiar with the game). But this is an amazing mix, the nod to Wasserman's work is especially delicious, and will be permanently placed on my playlist. -
OCR02040 - Final Fantasy Legend II "Craving for Burning Blood"

Am I the only one that thinks that this is too narrow stereo-wise? That probably might just be me, but this feels really old school and rocking. Definitely a lot of good energy in this one, and I am left wanting to hear more. -
OCR02139 - Final Fantasy IV "Crazy Old Betty"

This ^ Oh wow, I love the radio framing design. That plus the subtly, broken, "you just know something is wrong here" tone makes for a really delicious mix. Also, the swing elements are distinctive and feel welcome. Truly, this is a cool take on Into the Darkness. -
OCR02141 - Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask "Serious Moon Business"

COOL. Heh, this feels like a prelude to Threshold; all that mellow vibe is here mixed with some light airiness. Really nice work from both Halc and Insixfour, and an awesome debut for Insixfour too. -
Listening to this just makes me smile. Totally awesome take on the source; this takes a lot of the energy from the source and really just mellows it out. There's also a just few really, I can't think of a better word, funny parts in here; when I get to ~1:20, I can't help but to giggle. Oh, how I love this mix.

OCR02142 - Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening "Full Moon Cello"

Holy... Wow, this is amazing! The atmosphere put forth here is so rich and vivid; it really feels like I'm listening to this in a cave. I can almost swear that I hear actual cave-esque sound effects scattered throughout this track. I can definitely see why this was chosen to lead off the album. -
OCR02144 - Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening "House of Frogs"

Hehe, this is definitely smooth and mellow. The interplay between guitar and saxophone here is really fascinating; I haven't really heard anything quite like this before. On the whole, the entire track feels very reflexive, both musically and philosophically in mood. This is an awesome job. -
I have a small question: I'm wanting to re-review a few tracks for various reasons. Those would still count for the total goal set for the month right? Thanks.
-
I just have a small concern: The new torrents will have updated ID3v2 tags for mix numbers 2100 and below and, as of now, mix numbers 2136 and higher have the updated tagging. So, there's a gap of 35 mixes that don't have the updated tagging, and I was just wondering when those would be take care of. Also, just to confirm, I know, for example, that some of the old Ocarina of Time mixes list the game as "Zelda 64" where others give the full "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time", so are these and other similar discrepancies being clarified? Thanks!

OCR02099 - Silent Line: Armored Core "Morning, Thinker"

After listening to the sources, I can see why Anso fell in love with the music. Wow, they're amazing, and what Anso and DA did with them... DANG. It's just mind blowing. It took me a while to catch on to this mix, but when I did, it was like the clouds had parted. I adore how the strings are handled; if I were data being sent along the internet, that's how I imagine it would sound speeding through the internet. I also just love DA's vocals here, not just the effects Anso applied to them, but like the inflection in her voice when she gets to "baby". It's just really cool. There's just so many things done amazing with this mix. This is singlehandedly my favorite mix from Anso and DA. If you haven't listened to it now, go do it now. -
OCR02097 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "How K. Rool Went Insane"
42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
YES! ^ There's a nice dark atmosphere generated here, like someone has went quietly dangerously insane but just hasn't shown it. You can see the subtle, telltale signs, but you just dismiss them as quirks. Also, I love how the melody is carried via electronic synths over orchestral elements, making the whole thing reminiscent of the aforementioned quirks. This is just a cool mix, very foreboding and sinister, and well worth listening too. -
OCR02101 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Party's Over Here"
42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
QFT Nice work on getting those vocals, too. But anyway, I dig the peppy popness of the song. I just don't feel that the electric guitars really help to reach that goal though. They just feel too rough making them feel at odds with the bubbliness that is this song. Besides that, it's just sweet, sweet bubblegum pop. It's definitely fun and worth checking out. -
OCR02133 - Tecmo Bowl "Touchdown Hoedown"

In one camp at OCR, you have you're serious power ballads, sweeping orchestral arrangements, or emotional solo arrangements. In the other camp, you have things like these; the stuff which you just have to listen to and laugh, stuff you can't really take seriously. This is just plain fun, hilarity, and stuff the world needs more of. Stuff that just reminds you to not take yourself too seriously. This should definitely belong in everyone's playlist. Heck yes, I can't wait for that, especially if it's like this one. -
OCR02134 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "High Seas"
42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
^ What this guy said, lol. The intro is golden; I can almost see Indiana Jones peeking around a bush looking at some monkey temple or something. I also really like the very light feel to everything. There's a nice sense of optimism like you can finally explore the ruins without some giant boulder rolling after you. Knowing how this was made just makes this even more impressive. All in all, a really cool song and worth checking out. -
OCR02126 - King Kong 2 (MSX) "End of the Adventure"
42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a really cool arrangement; definitely Pirates of the Caribbean-esque. I would say, though, that the PotC soundtracks definitely has in general a more dire/urgent edge to them, but this is definitely just as epic. The piano lead is amazing; I just love how it flows. I really like this a lot, but I do feel like something is missing; there's just some level it doesn't quite hit, but it's still an awesome song. -
OCR02129 - Teen Agent "A Village's Welcome"
42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is nicely peppy, and I really like how it was described as full of pomp and circumstance. I wouldn't rate this as Christmas music like or overly emotional. But this does feel like the incidental music Disney would play over the beginning of their film as the scene pans over some 19th century Autumnal European village. O.k. so that was kinda ultra specific. But there is a nice Autumn/Fall of the year vibe to it. I also like the sweeping motions it sometimes engages in. It gives it the grandiose nature a hero's return needs. That's another vibe I'm getting from this; it's not like the music that would be played at a king's coronation or home welcoming, but more of the kind that a village's hometown hero would receive. e.g. something honest, familiar, simple, and close knit yet still reverent and deserving of recognition. Needless to say, the more I dwell on this the more I appreciate this song. Definitely worth checking out. -
OCR02008 - Star Fox Adventures "Fossil's Oasis"
42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
BOOM! This arrangement is something I listen to when I'm writing. Because it, like me, has a story to tell, and it does so epically and majestically. It has those wonderful, power ballad guitars, but at such a deliberate pace. It's like the careful and precise metalwork at Hephaestus's forge. Each blow and strike has all the energy needed but in a very controlled fashion. In short, this mix just means a lot to me and is hands down one of my favorite arrangements on OCR. I like you're style; you seem to know what I'm talking about. -
OCR01126 - Great Greed "The Greatest Greed"
42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow, this was a mix that I didn't discover until recently, but I really love. Each section feels like a puzzle piece interlocking seamlessly into the previous. Also each guitar/piano section lasts long enough for maximum emotional effectiveness and then passes along to the next. But I will go ahead and echo all the previous sentiment that this is just too darn short. T_T (It also ends way to abruptly.) What we do have just leaves me wanting more, and this is something I will happily put on repeat and listen for a long time. -
OCR00286 - Final Fantasy VI "The Arab Painting"

This feels very mushroom-esque. I'm not 100% sure what that means, but it just feels appropriate. <.<; I don't know, it just feels like the theme of some mushroom village in a Zelda-esque game somewhere. Anyway I agree the themes should have been blended together at the transition, but it just works. I especially like how the percussion carries over at the transition. I also especially like the vocal samples; they give the track this very wise sage/middle ages feel to it. My only critique of that is there is several instances before the transition where the vocal samples really bounce down in pitch which felt unnecessary. But otherwise this is a cute, mellow, and mushroomy mix that is well worth a listen to and is probably a new favorite of mine.
