I definitely want it there, I'm just trying to rethink doing it with tabs vs. some other mechanism. Tabs are less than ideal since there are other tabs (games, remixes) that may or may not be valid and the forums are outside the context of the main database. I'm currently thinking some sort of prominent icon/graphic instead...

A Scholar & A Physician song: "She's a Witch"

Very cool, posted a comment. I hear influences, to be sure, but it's solid stuff that's relatively up my alley. Dig. -
Need to check 100% but pretty sure vb allows moderator creation of tags and approval of user-submitted tags. We'd start with tags created by myself & the panel and approve things that made sense. Alas, Mustin would not get his own tag.

Last.fm is one option, but honestly the way they handled disabling their embedded player without notifying webmasters first left a really bad taste in my mouth... in my opinion they don't have their shit together, and I don't want to rely on them for much of anything, much as I like certain aspects of their site/technology. The easiest option is enabling thread tagging, supported in vBulletin 3.8, for the remix reviews forum, and then potentially pulling that data for display on the main mix page, although simply having it on the forums, with the ability to jump to the mix writeup from review threads, might be sufficient. We're discussing this internally... we might put it to a panel vote and/or community vote, or simply implement something in "trial" mode.

Prove it. Objectively. Can you? I certainly can't... certain characters deal/take more damage, sure, but as to the supremacy of their individual set of moves, that's something that's far more subjective, and goes to how that character is commonly employed. If you based tiers/strength of characters solely off of who was owning 2000BP players in the 1000BP range, I'm pretty sure Zangief would beat Sagat any day of the week... but again, still a guess. You'd need data mining access to PSN and XBL and a very strong knowledge of statistical analysis to make any of these claims with certitude.

I'm just curious about who you're playing against, and how often... atm I've worked up about 2200BP, though I routinely fall back to 1700 and build back up. I just beat a 3000+ Sagat, and in general the characters I'm having the hardest time against (as Ken) are Blanka and Vega, maybe M. Bison save that light punches seem to help a lot. As per Sagat being "Top Tier" and there being no "complexity"... you're phrasing these things in absolutes. For one, it's all about matchups, secondly, the tiers really are established based on higher levels of play. If you've got 8000 points and you tell me Sagat is ridiculously overpowered, that means something... if you're down with the scrubs like me, you're basing the assessment off your own abilities, which aren't the best barometer... I know we all like to talk shop and sound like we're SF experts and what not, but very few of us are, and tiers are always debatable. Dhalsim won against Sagat here: , yet Dhalsim isn't supposed to be great. Another thing that everyone's ignoring is that tier rating in many cases is an aggregate of how a given character plays against ALL other characters. If you're playing a different character every single match, then yes, Sagat will supposedly thrash you more than anyone else, but if (like most of us), you stick to one or even a several characters, the discrepancy is not as noticeable. In summation, statistics will no doubt show that tiers do exist, and I've no doubt Sagat is up at the top, but it's almost meaningless for most of us... in my opinion.
-
Andy & others... regarding Sagat being "OP"... what you REALLY, REALLY need to understand about the tiers, is that they're for people playing at the highest of levels. Experts. People far better than you or me. It's true that, when you get absolutely fantastic players together and weed out all the possible strategies and tactics, yes, certain characters are going to fare better than others, consistently. But for players like "us" (assuming most here aren't over, say, 3000+BP), the tiers aren't really as applicable. Case in point, if you listen to the tiers, Vega's really not supposed to be that great, but (speaking for myself, but also from what I've seen), people manage to do quite a bit with him. The whole tier thing sounds like an excuse to me... most of the characters seem fairly balanced at average and above average levels of play, and only when you get people with insane skills do more consistent trends emerge. My two cents.

Glad the feedback is appreciated; would love to hear more from you... we're not the speediest site in the world when it comes to posting submissions, but I think I can safely guarantee the wait would be less than two years -

What music/video streaming service should OCR use?
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in General Discussion
Larry and I are cool with giving you access. Thoughts: I'd like something closer if not identical to the actual "OverClocked ReMix" official logo used (iomanoid.ttf)... okay to use shortened "OC ReMix" but I'd like it to look closer. Let me know if you need vector artwork. I'm cool with the main headphones graphic being orange and glowing, but I'd rather the background be the same silvery tones the site uses, rather than blue. In other words, it's a bit too colorful, and I'd prefer it match the site aesthetic more closely. In addition to the URL, I'm thinking maybe the video itself (non-annotation) could be more like a commercial... maybe mention 1600+ free mixes, talk about album releases, info about composers, interviews, mention the torrents, etc... trying to think of a way to incorporate more images/video rather than just the giant headphones. I think the headphones can carry MOST of the video, don't get me wrong, it'd just be nice to see some variation. Maybe even the site blurb, mission statement... just brainstorming here. Maybe even pictures of the old site, chronology, who knows... Doing this in Vegas, or...? If it's Vegas, one more involved option might be scripting... Vegas is scriptable in .NET, and if we hooked you (or someone else w/ Vegas + .NET skills) up with a partial export of the database, you could actually autogenerate videos with content specific to each mix. That's probably a pipedream, though... In general, yeah, scripting in .NET would probably slow us down too much. Having a really solid, aesthetically pleasing "infomercial" (sans host/talking) that has the mix playing, with the annotation covering the credits/details, seems best. If possible, I'd like to see the above suggestions explored. It'd also be good as a regular practice to link to both the mix page and the review thread, as suggested, to encourage feedback. Youtube seems like the most reliable option. Any opinions on imeem? -
I've been planning on ReMixing Deejay's theme in 5/4... this video provides useful instruction & example that I will try to incorporate.

For the same reason people rent things? The counter-argument isn't "why are you downloading it", it's "why not rent/netflix/etc. instead?" - as those are the alternatives to try-before-buy... ditto with software demos/trials. Just to play devil's advocate here, one interesting note is that the discussion is always about whether pirating hurts anyone or not. What about whether it HELPS anyone, or not? Bill Gates publicly acknowledged that pervasive pirating helped make Windows as ubiquitous as it is, so there's actually potential benefit to software manufacturers themselves, but I'm also talking about the intrinsic value of what people DO with said software. Pirating games, yeah sure, you're not really "giving back" by playing games... but if a poor genius Brazilian student pirates 3D Studio Max, After Effects, and Photoshop, puts together the best animated short film the world has ever seen, and gives that away for free, there's a little karmic compensation going on. It's a subtle point - these are subtle arguments - but I think some people draw a line when it comes to creative software (Adobe, MAX, audio stuff) as to whether you're using it to make money, or whether you're giving the music/movies/whatever you make with it away for free. That's probably a "slippery slope" argument, as they say, but it's certainly one that further muddies already dirty waters. Draconian DRM, companies violating the GPL and reselling other people's hard work, etc. are all other topics that should come into play. I think of myself as a good consumer who's poured tens of thousands into music, movies, software, and games, but I also don't come down really strongly on either side of this argument... I think an idealist/anarchist "pirate everything" attitude is juvenile and ridiculous, but also feel like the 21st century has irreversibly changed the nature and dissemination of intellectual property, and the corporate world needs to adapt.

OverClocked ReMix Releases Free Fan Tribute Album, Tales: Summoning of Spirits March 7, 2009 Contact: David W. Lloyd, press@ocremix.org FAIRFAX, VA--Following the previous release of its official soundtrack to Capcom's Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, OverClocked ReMix today released its thirteenth album of video game music fan remixes, Tales: Summoning of Spirits. The album honors the Namco Tales series with over 50 arrangements of the classic RPGs Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia, originally composed by Motoi Sakuraba, Shinji Tamura, Ryota Furuya & Takashi Arai. The album also features arrangements of the franchise's recent installment, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World for the Wii. Available for free download at http://tales.ocremix.org, Summoning of Spirits is not affiliated with or endorsed by Namco Bandai. More than 40 artists from the OverClocked ReMix community contributed over five hours of music to the album, with interpretations covering a variety of genres and styles from progressive rock to jazz to world music to orchestral. Album co-director, art director and musician Aleah "Kureejii Lea" Baker commended the efforts of the musicians, the largest group assembled for an OC ReMix project to date: "I truly think this project's strength comes from the people who participated in its creation. As can be seen by the high number of collaborative tracks, they offered their individual abilities and skills to each other to get amazing results." The first-ever fan-made album dedicated to the Tales series, Summoning of Spirits was touted by Baker as raising awareness of the Tales series and its scores: "All this wonderful talent came together to offer over fifty tracks in a huge range of styles, so I like to think we have something for everyone to enjoy, even if you're not too familiar with the games themselves." Fellow co-director Kyle "KyleJCrb" Crouse was drawn to the Tales series for its groundbreaking elements such as Tales of Phantasia's graphics and use of voice acting, as well as a fully vocalized main theme. The release of the album brings closure to the undertaking Crouse helmed: "Finally! Summoning of Spirits, after nearly four years in production, is unleashed upon the world. It has been an amazing ride to be sure. So many musicians brought their talents to the table to pay tribute to the wonderful Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia soundtracks. Bringing together the largest OC ReMix project ever wasn't an easy task, but I'm happy to say that I have been a part of it all." OverClocked ReMix founder and president David "djpretzel" Lloyd, who contributed to Summoning of Spirits, praised the perseverance of Crouse and Baker and the high quality of the album's arrangements: "This was a massive effort, requiring true grit, determination, and persistence from its directors. Like many others, I've been waiting for this day anxiously for quite awhile, and when so much time elapses, it's hard for ANY effort to live up to the hype and accumulated anticipation. Summoning of Spirits delivers on all levels; I'll be listening to these tracks and returning to this album for the rest of my life, and its release represents another milestone for OverClocked ReMix." About OverClocked ReMix Founded in 1999, OverClocked ReMix is an organization dedicated to the appreciation, preservation, and interpretation of video game music. Its primary focus is www.ocremix.org, a website featuring hundreds of free fan arrangements, information on game music and composers, resources for aspiring artists, and a thriving community of video game music fans. ### Digg it: http://digg.com/music/Free_OC_ReMix_Album_Tales_Series_Summoning_of_Spirits Download it: http://tales.ocremix.org Torrent: http://bt.ocremix.org/torrents/Namco_Tales_Series_-_Summoning_of_Spirits.torrent
