Once we move forward with our plans to integrate the workshop with the overall site database, the concept of "rejections" won't carry quite as much weight... mixes accepted by the judges panel or direct-posted will be "featured" mixes, but everything else in the workshop (WIP, finished, submitted) will show up on the main listings, etc.

In other words, there will no longer be a need for a separate site that accepts everything (which is basically YouTube/SoundCloud anyways, except those will always be bigger), nor will there be a need for a separate site to host rejections. Will people still insist there's a need for those types of sites after we make this change? I guess we'll see...

and here's the ones of my system, as promised.
i had to upgrade from my venerable storm scout (still one of my favorite cases of all time!) because my new graphics card was too long. i didn't realize this thanks to newegg listing the pcb length of the card, which is useless when the cooler hangs an inch over the end of that. i went with a corsair carbide air 540, which is a cube case with some interesting design choices that i really liked.
here's my old case. this was a working system so the cables aren't as nice as they were when i built it in early 2011 (thread here)

here's a few pictures of the new case. note that the motherboard tray's in the middle of the case, as opposed to offset to one side. this allows the motherboard and associated cpu, cooler, and gpu to be on one side, and the psu, ssd tray, and optical drives to be on the other side. there's also two hotswap bays for 3.5" drives on the mobo side, which work pretty well. note the width and the bevy of customization options for fans and other sundries.

here's my system in the case. note the USB3 and graphics power headers - they're just too thick to really route properly. if i get motivated, i'm going to remove the looming on the wires, spray the wires white, and route them cleaner with some wiring to train the wires to sit better. same with the USB3 header.
you can really see the cable management options here. it's amazing the room this thing has to fit any cable set you want.

here's a few in-situ shots. i'm planning on getting a cool white light bar for the top of the case, or swapping my hyper 212 evo for an H100 or similar self-contained watercooling loop. i'd get more of the white-led fans that the case had if i do that.

i've been really inspired by the design of this case. i've been meaning to paint my office for some time since the green in there is not particularly my favorite, and i'm thinking about doing the walls in white with a black stripe offset down the middle, like the case =) combine that with my recent storage acquisitions and i think it might actually look pretty good.
regarding the case, i am debating dropping my optical drives completely and replacing the 5.25" bay with either a monitoring window (like, a temp monitor) or a fan controller. if i go with more fans in the case, i'll likely do the controller.

I'm a HUGE fan of Studio One & am looking forward to 3.0 - haven't tried Bitwig Studio yet, but it looks interesting.

We've added both of these DAWs to your member profile options - one of the advantages of our new forums is that managing custom profile fields appears to be much easier!

Woei! Immediately added Bitwig to my profile

I noticed that Renoise is not in the DAW list. Might be intentional (too few people here to bother about it) but if you add it, it's another excuse for me to edit my profile

djpretzel got a reaction from Mikeaudio in Advantages of Reason over FLStudio
    Short version:

Reason has a better, larger, more diverse library of usable factory sounds (still, though FL is improving in this arena)
Fruity is actually MORE powerful, however, because at this point the ability to run plugins is crucial, and the propheads are simply being stubborn about keeping Reason entirely proprietary and self-contained

I'd stick w/ FL; you can always host Reason via ReWire...

This is really going to reward the careful listener. While it may not immediately grab the attention of the casual drop-in, focus on the way this piece is constructed rewards in all kinds of neat ways. It's like a Zelda treasure box that has way more in it than you guessed. I enjoy this piece!

discmakers.com has a great short run service where you can make as few copies as you want. I did a 2-copy thing with them once.

Ahh, excellent! The original tracks are two of my favorites from the game, and this does supreme justice to the source material.  Funny enough, I never even noticed the common motif thread between the two until I heard them blended together here.  Nicely done!

    Answer 1:
Post some examples of music you've made with your current string samples. Evaluation can help people tell you if your problems are easily solvable by clever programming or if the samples are the problem themselves.

    Answer 2:
Good samples will get you there faster than wasting time on awful ones.

Action Strings is mediocre; it's just a bunch of pre-made "action" phrases. Repeated staccato rhythms and the like.

Session Strings Pro is a super dry sound, and the recordings aren't great; I don't even think it has legato scripting. It's kind of love or hate; Session Strings gives you the "pop" string sound really easy but you can't really do actually intimate string stuff with it. It's good in band ensembles, but it absolutely does not function as a string orchestra; it's too thin.

Kontakt Strings are... pretty mediocre as well. They sound thin, and don't offer much dynamic or variation. You can drop them as chordal backgrounds, that's about it.

What kind of string writing do you want to do? That can better help answer the question as to what string library would be better for you.

This is a running list of the pretty good string libraries around right now:
    -Spitfire Sable
    -Spitfire Mural
    -Audiobro LA Scoring Strings
    -Berlin Strings
    -CineSamples CineStrings CORE
    -Various Libraries from Vienna Symphonic
-Cinematic Strings 2 (this is what I have, and it's wonderful)

Fantastic. This is a genius idea and it really does sound like a few Mega Man themes being ran through a Harry Potter soundtrack machine. Usually when someone tries to emulate a score style, it's either Elfman or epic adventure, so hearing the whimsical Potter take of Flash and Stone Man is sweet. Very nice.

That definitely did NOT happen, that is not the case.  I think djp would be flattered you said that, but had to clarify he didn't invent the notion of arranging video game music. He did build a community around arranging VGM across all styles/genres/gaming systems though. Turned out pretty good!
