For a few weeks I've been thinking on maybe doing some video tutorials, I've gotten some questions since round 1 and the stuff I know I've learned it from the community or just from the internet.  Maybe it's time to give back.

Right now it's almost 1am for me, the listening party starts in an hour! #ocrcompo irc channel on esper.net.
 
And I have no trouble staying up until 3am during summer days. I make up for the lack of sleep in the afternoon when it's too hot to do anything else anyway

So my process for this mix this round was 

1) Write riff
2) What even is genre
3) Welp guess I'll put them next to each other
4) Everything I learned in highschool was a waste of time
5) Is the time signature 4/4?
6) If yes, add or subtract a beat
7) Repeat 6 until satisfactory
Cry at your wasted childhood 
9) submit

Me too! My track turned out even better than I thought. I'm not going to hype myself up that much though, everything in this compo has been amazing, haha. I can't wait to hear what everyone came up with this round!

I have a decent 1:15 in my track so far... I'm feeling a lot better about this round than I did with my Round 1 track though. The style is a bit more of a return to form for me too

Even better idea: let's have a SFRG Bonus Round where every participant raps/sings over wildfire's instrumental. It'd be like the old vocal VOCR compos haha.

haha.  jack as... i mean, excellently awesome former boss.    that wasn't layering that was just piling sound on sound until it started to sound good. I think i was roughly 3 more basses short of it working too.   
 
really tho once i got through that remix things started clicking production wise for me like crazy.

ladyWildfire, I strongly urge you to get someone to spit some rhymes over Tribal Hunter if you decide to sub to OCR. The beat is too good and is practically begging for someone to rap over it.

Okay, so I can finally stop hitting F5 every 30 seconds until later tonight.

Two thoughts today: 
1) I really missed an opportunity with the name of my Round 1 track. Totally should have named it "Electric Moves and Symmetric Grooves". It would have rhymed even better and still would have fit the theme, given that squids/cephalopods are bilaterally symmetrical. Oh well.
 
2) Will, your track sounds nothing like Hanson. I am disappointed.
 
 
 
Way more calm? Hmm, I make a lot of chill jams.  I'd say this is somewhere in the middle between upbeat and chill And yeah after I made it, I thought I could have bumped the BMP up a tad. Also didn't have any time to make the arrangement longer unfortunately. Thanks for the comments!

This is what has been working for me the past couple of years.  Getting a good mix is the most important thing.  Most of the time I just make music without any effects on the master track at all.  Focus on getting the right mix levels, on bussing your stuff correctly, on giving the instruments their own space via panning/eq, etc.  Nowadays my mastering process is very simple and keeps getting simpler the more I focus on getting a good mix beforehand. 
Try to shy away from presets.  Get used to starting from scratch on compressor settings.  It's hard at first, gets easier with time, and you'll get the best results that are appropriate for your track.
