OCR02194 - Pokémon Red Version "Battle for the Badge"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The build-up in the first few seconds was great. This really takes me back to when I first played the game. Drums sound great to me, and those guitars have the proper kick to give the song a lot of "battle energy". The nice bit starting from 2:00 was really enjoyable and I love the entire breakdown section. Very nice ReMix, Fishy. -
Happy Birthday to both of you!

OCR02183 - Super Mario Galaxy "Gusty Piano in a Garden"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Beautiful and enjoyable, every bit of it. The way it starts off small and modest and builds up to a nice, small energetic jazz stint was wonderful. A tad short, but not in length in my opinion. Short in the sense that if you sit back and enjoy it, it goes by fast. That’s when the repeat mood is a good tool. It really is a gorgeous piano/jazz piece, so well done. -
When I first listened to this, I wasn't a fan of the CD skipping, but the more and more I listen to this, the less it bothers me. I think the glitching went on a bit too long, but that's a minor complaint when the rest of the track is awesome. I'm actually glad that this wasn't a clear cut guitar only ReMix and that the electronic bits were done so well. The SFX blended in spectacularly and the Shredder's laugh at the end was a great way to finish it. Good ReMix by a Bad Dude.

OCR01249 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "From Within"

I actually like this version better honestly. But both are nice masterpieces. The guitar work is done extremely well and it flows well with the source tune. I really can't imagine a better take with this tune in this genre. Damn good ReMix. -

OCR02165 - Super Mario Kart & Super Mario 64 "Koopa Nova"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Incredible ReMix! I loved the even pacing and the cool bossa nova groove that really brings the two tunes used right out. Very nice alternating and mixing of Koopa Beach and Powerful Mario. The whole ReMix sounds very relaxed and natural, extremely tropical too. The flute work was amazingly done as well. Fantastic job. -
Happy Birthday Gollgagh!

Oh, yeah, I think that's what he reminded me of. Thanks.

OCR02071 - Final Fantasy IV "Everclear Hangover IV"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I love this ReMix for one simple reason: It's a joke song that you know is going to piss people off. It's too much fun watching people get all bent out of whack over this. But does it sound good? Sure, if you don't take it seriously. Is it more suited for OLR? Probably. Could it be a little less juvenile? Absolutely. But all in all, I see nothing wrong with most of the production, the lyrics, while corny and white as hell, are okay (but really, let's leave this to Weird Al from now on). This is a ReMix that begs the question to a lot of reviewers: "Why so serious"? Not the best ReMix, at all, but it was worth it for the review thread. -
Okay, I know Mario has been covered quite a lot and all of the original Mario Bros tracks have ReMixes, but there were two themes exclusive to the All-Stars version of the game for the SNES: Bowser's boss battle and the Final Bowser boss battle. Kinda short, but I've seen more done with less on the site. So I'm just tossing out the suggestion for any ReMixers stumped and feel like doing a Mario song that doesn't have any coverage. If you would like to give it a shot, good luck and thanks. Robotic Dub Reggie? Jeez, you just can't put a limit on the amount of new things you hear on this site, eh? The music sounds really good in this tune, what with the whole funky robotic dub thing going. Has a nice beat and the flow really works over the course of the song. Reggie and Tropical Beats are some of my favorite genres, and this is an impressive take on all that so well done. Was really hard to find any faults with this track. Sounds really good, Mattias.

OCR01254 - Street Fighter II "Club del Toro"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Love the voice samples in this ReMix. F-f-f-fight! It's really blends in with the whole dance/trance beat. I couldn't imagine Vega's theme as a dance track before, but now it's not nearly as far-fetched. I kinda like the "Mortal Kombat"-like name run that listed the countries. It would have been cool if somehow the same could have be done for the fighter's names later on for the track, but overall it's an awesome ReMix with a ton of great energy going for it. Sweet stuff. -
OCR00418 - Street Fighter II "Vega's Ballad"
Crulex replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Is it just me or does OA's rap fit the background music? Damn it, I'm convinced, Vega's theme is perfect for Spanish rap/R&B/etc. McVaffe always seems to have the best ReMixes (more please!). The slick piano melds very well with the R&B sound and while the theme seems to repeat, it's not the repetitive kind of repeat. It seems to use all of it's time wisely and slow down Vega's theme perfectly for the ballad theme. Extremely smooth song done right. Great song. -
OCR00736 - Super Mario Bros. 3 "Staff Battle"
Crulex replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Okay, so now for something completely different. I don't hate this ReMix. I actually kinda dig the "pac-man low-fi arcade hip-hopish" thing it's got going on. It's weird to describe. It's not annoying, or bad, I just......meh, you know? It's got a good beat, and other than the repetitiveness of this, I just simply don't hate it. Like I said, hard to describe. I think this classifies as the "may grow on me more one day but for now it's just okay" side for me. -
Much, much, MUCH, better than the source tune of the puzzles. Thank god. Yeah, kinda short and bite-sized, but when it comes down to it, I think that adds to my appreciation of this particular tune, considering the source. Very light jazz with a nice piano and glitched up drums, perfect for a quick break. Good ReMix for a good game. Can't really ask for more.

OCR02154 - Cave Story "The Angels of Hell"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Grand and epic, man. I love the contrast between the opening majestic-like theme and going (literally) into the dark, tense Hell and then back to grander things. This orchestration does not stop short and yet it still doesn't sound like 6:00, which shows great spacing and keeps the listeners drawn in. Wonderful arrangement, the instruments sound tip top and a damn good way to go out in 2010! Highly recommended. -
OCR01266 - Street Fighter II "The Ken Song"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
That guitar! Damn, that guitar sounds so crisp and high quality, it's fantastic! I can actually hear the whole Top 40 thing and it really works with this. The lyrics are good and fit the character. Nothing against any other ReMix on the site, cause there are a lot that sound like this, but this one in particular just has that professional radio sound and you can almost picture being played for no reason other than it was good. Absolutely one of the best ReMixes of Ken's theme. Can you say I've enjoyed this? Shoryuken! -
OCR01546 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "The Delay"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Combining two of the best themes from DKC2 and sounding this good doing it is an impressive feat. This is a very slick ReMix and I kinda get Metroid and Mass Effect (that one could be just me) vibes from it. Not particularly the kind of chill that I can actually chill to, but it's peaceful and all around awesome. Very mystical and rewarding to hear. And with that, I think I caught up on the DKC ReMixes....until the next one drops. -
OCR02080 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Swamp Gases"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Smooth silky goodness. I've always enjoyed psy-(insert subtype here) sounding music, so psybient and/or psydub works for me. AnSo did real well in taking this theme and putting that chilling and relaxing dub twist to it. I like the "wobbling" sounds at the end. Very nice. -
I love the source tune. It really is almost the Ice Cap of the DKC games (even though I like the factories and Mines better). This ReMix did good at giving the tune justice and gives us yet another way to listen to it. Nice and mellow, but at least it has some energy to it. The only thing I didn't like was it sounded like one of the keys or bells or something was a bit to high and came off as harshly sharp. Didn't like it, but it didn't detract from the song that much and still lent to the electric feel of it. Aside from that, awesome ReMix.

OCR00562 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Brambly Rivers"
Crulex replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
While I don't mind Midi-chiptunish sounding ReMixes, this sounded a little TOO chiptunish for me. It was kinda grating and awkward all over. I do, however, like that you tried to take a somber and serious source and make it upbeat. I love the sound of Stickerbush Symphony upbeat and full of energy. It was definitely different. Perhaps a cleaned up version would be amazing, as the whole idea of a faster happy ReMix of this song intrigues me, but this isn't exactly it. Not the best I've heard, but good try. -
OCR02140 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Breathe Deep"
Crulex replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Incredible build up for this DnB ReMix. It was pretty liberal, but the melody was still there and was enjoyable. The evolution over the course of the song was great, going from piano to live sax and more. The fade out was kinda unexpected, cause I expected it to go in reverse and deconstruct back to the piano before ending, but it still did the job of ending it before it went too far. Good job on this.
