Lanayru was the best part of the game IMO. The "time travelling" mechanics there were so cool and beautiful looking. I loved the little robots too.

I'm not experienced at all, but if you know the notes, you can try playing them on your preferred instrument and see if you get inspiration to do something. Are you planning on doing any particular style for the remix? By the way, I am wanting feedback on my WIP for this competition. PM me or something if you are interested!

Nice to see someone who knows Frost*! I like Hyperventilate more than BLM though

Getting started with REAPER for free
jnWake replied to AMT's topic in Music Composition & Production
I've been playing with Reaper and some VSTs (mostly from here: http://www.dskmusic.com/ ) and I encountered some strange issues. Some of the VSTs sound out of tune. It happened with the ChoirZ (slightly with this one) and Synthopia (very out of tune) ones. Is that because the VST is meant to sound like that or I'm doing something wrong? Also, when I load a piano soundfont and a drum soundfont, the piano seems to "lag" and starts playing quick arpeggios instead of straight chords. How can I fix that? -
But asking for a MIDI isn't a sin. You can transcribe stuff and want to check or compare some notes with a MIDI. I agree that it's better to learn stuff by ear, but people don't always have the time/patience/will to do so, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Marillion - This Strange Engine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCyLYtq2SY0&feature=relmfu So underrated...

Oh, the Kronos is like 2 times the price of the M50 where I live, which is why I discarded it. Thanks for the advice by the way! Some internet comments mentioned some glitches in the M50, like the screen freezing or some notes getting frozen. Do you know if that's common/true?

finished Donkey Kong Country - Aquatic Ambience
jnWake replied to htotheig's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
It sounds beautiful. I had no idea that instrument could sound like that. Like Skrypnyk said, there are a few too slow parts at the beggining, but it is amazing anyway. -
I'd love to buy a Kronos but it is WAY to expensive, especially where I live. I used to own a Korg X5D and played live a few times and never had any issues, so I don't think I'll be disappointed with the M50 in that way. I've not tried it yet though, but I hope to do so soon.

Hey, I want to buy a new keyboard soon and I got interested in the Korg M50. Does anybody here have any experiences with it? Is it recommended? My budget allows me to buy something more expensive than the M50 but I don't really want to spend much more than the M50's price.

mod-review Chrono Trigger - Good Night (Inn jingle)
jnWake replied to Ivan Hakštok's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The cymbals sound a bit too loud, you should work on that. I'm a bit surprised that your arrangement manages to sound happier than the original source Even though you use the same chord progression for the whole song, it doesn't feel repetitive (maybe thanks to the drums). However, the song could maybe reach higher levels if you experimented a bit more, like changing tone or something. Maybe, making more than minor variations. After all, the source is like 10 seconds long. -
This is quite cool. It isn't very different to the original arrangement-wise but the sounds used are nice. Using the xylophone at the beggining was a good choice and the strings sound nice. The drums are a bit weird in my opinion, they sound a bit off-beat, but I don't know if that's just me. Anyway, I enjoyed it.

Most frustrating/least satisfying games
jnWake replied to Phonetic Hero's topic in General Discussion
Football Manager has its frustrating moments, like losing a league when you had a 7 point advantage or managing big clubs and losing against small ones... Yoshi's Story was indeed ver unsatisfying, especially when compared with the amazaing Yoshi Island. I remember being very frustrated with some minigames in Banjo Kazooie/Tooie and Donkey Kong 64 when I was a kid. -
finished Peach's Groove - MarioCarGT (Super Mario Kart Qmix)
jnWake replied to Rukunetsu's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I loved it. The source is really short and you managed to make the remix a decent length. I especially liked the piano (not sure how the sound is called, chorus/rhodes piano?). You have some nice remixes uploaded btw. EDIT: One very small complaint is that the drums are a bit loud at some sections and the melodies are a bit hard to appreciate. -
wip Smiles to Tears (Onett, Smiles and Tears)
jnWake replied to pokemoneinstein's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The bass is a bit loud, I had to lower the bass in my speakers to actually hear the rest of the instruments. Anyway, I like the idea behind the mix. The drums are fine in my opinion, though you could try using the ride cymbal, maybe it matches the mood of the song more. For the piano you could use some chords to back the melody. Also, you could try experimenting a bit more with the melody (making the melody play some higher notes in the ending for example). I hope you also add the rest of the melodies from the original source. I think you will though, since this WIP is very short. -
Pain of Salvation - Handful of Nothing I miss the early days of this band...

I'm a big fan of CC's OST so this interested me. The arrangement is nice but there are a lot of issues with some sounds and instruments. The acoustic guitar at the beggining could use some sustain, I think it would sound much better (maybe even use a piano soundfont instead of the acoustic guitar). Distortion guitar could play an octave higher in that section too. In the next section, the flute/whistle thing sounds a bit out of tune sometimes. Also, the bass drum and the guitar get kind of lost in the mix. Is there a bass playing by the way? It's either non existant or very low volume, and you can't make Metal without a bass. Also, the drums could use some work. The use of the hi-hat could be more constant. I really like the introduction of the second theme. Only issues I can point out are with the volumes in a few parts, but I like the sound of this section. 3rd theme is nice, and the return to the second theme is also good. Overall, a very nice remix with some volume and sound issues (especially the acoustic guitar).

finished Yoshi's Island Flower Garden Remix
jnWake replied to noTuX's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I like them when all the instruments play together, but at the beggining of the song they don't convince me much. They're like too "quick" so it feels a bit empty. Or maybe it's just the fact that the notes aren't identical to the original song, so they grab me a bit by surprise -

I liked this remix. It is quite true to the original song, but that is nice. I loved the sounds used (except maybe the first sound). -
wip Chrono Trigger & Cross_Sad theme mash-up
jnWake replied to HoboKa's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I like the intro, took me a while to recognize the source (actually had to look it up), but I like how you mixed it. The windy noise created a nice mood. The transition to the second theme sounds good IMO. At 2:22 the flute plays a completely off note. When "Prisioners of Fate" begins, I feel the drums don't add anything to the piece. Also, I think the section at 4:00 would sound great with only strings, and with a more "natural" sound. Overall, the arrangement is pretty nice. The piano bits are good. Only drawbacks are the off notes in the flute and that some sounds are too unnatural (strings and bass drum mainly). -
Thanks Stevo for the answer. I am starting to experiment with Reaper and I hope to post a WIP in the Workshop sometime "soon"!

wip FF8 Force Your Way(Boss Theme) Rock Remix
jnWake replied to shawn2point0's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I like the remix, it is very heavy. However, the equalization of the drums doesn't convince me. I'm not sure if I can blame my headphones, but I think the bass drum doesn't sound too good. Snare has the issue pointed out above. Also, even though you wanted to stick to barebones, I think a synth pad on the background would really help this song. It feels a bit empty sometimes. Nice guitar playing btw.
