Omph. That's cheap. I'll look into their capabilities. Can they be used to played GB roms or only GBA ones?
-
Well... Jeremy Soule is an actual game music composer, so his remix should be pretty high quality, but I really wouldn't know. Some of the worst produced songs are likely found among the oldest on the site. What units would you want the gap measured in? Or do you prefer an adjective? Such as "considerable"? That answer will have to suffice until one of the judges come around

I've actually seen a gba running a nes emulator... but one thing I don't get is the resolution issue. A gba only has 240 x 160 pixels, while a nes has 256 x 240 (or 256 x 224). I wonder how it's scaled down to fit...

Lsdj was only $0.01 last time I checked. So yeah, I'm definitely buying that. Haha Because a brick, as the name implies, is heavy and bulky. Its monitor also isn't very good. There's a reason nintendo keeps making new kinds of gameboys, you know, and it's not only to make money.
-
Heh, ok, yeah, the prosound mod seems simple enough... you still need a gameboy though, and right now I have none. And I'd rather have a new one. I might settle for something older though... if it's insanely cheap. I might be able to use an old GBA from a friend rather than buy my own. But let's say I go with an old brick. What can I use then? What options do I have? Is there any way I could get more than one game/rom (e.g. lsdj+nanoloop) on the same cart? Preferrably one that doesn't require a special docking station for flashing, but rather USB or memory card based.
-
I find the prosound mod a little expensive. Personally, I don't really care about being able to play old gb games, since if I buy a micro I'll be using a cartridge that has a gb emulator built-in anyway. As far as sound is concerned, I won't be using the thing for live performances or anything, and I can always borrow someone else's brick for recording. I'm more concerned with being able to back things up, and what I really want is something handy to just pick up and start making music with while riding the bus or something. Plus, I think it'd be cool to use the sound features of the gba, not just the original gb, if I used nanoloop or if I wanted to try my hand at making my own gba game (I hear it's a lot easier than making one for the original game boy...). The shoulder button issue worries me though. Is that sort of stuff covered by warranty? Is it still possible to buy a game boy micro with warranty? They don't sell them at all in stores over here, but I found someone who sells them and mails them for roughly 70 bucks, new. The only "reliable" seller I've found sells them for more than twice that money. I'm going overseas in the summer though, maybe I should wait until then. If you feel like being really nice, if you live in the US, maybe the next time you go somewhere they sell this kind of stuff you could ask if they sell any... I tried the links from the official site and they all said they were out of stock. I guess trying the thing before buying it is a good advice, but I don't know where to find one to try without actually buying one... hehe.

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
Dafydd replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Probably, but it should be possible to fix either way. Either djp didn't notice or he doesn't know how to fix it, or, most likely, is aware of it but hasn't had the time to fix it. Either way, it looks bad. -
The GB micro can't play the old games, unfortunately. Only the small cartridges (GBA). But I'd still much rather have a micro than a GBA. I think lsdj will work on any kind of gameboy as long as it's on a cartridge that's compatible with the machine - so I need to find out which cartridges are compatible with the micro... If anyone has used a gb micro and had issues with it of any kind (other than the one stated above), I'd be interested in hearing about them, too.

Roller-Coaster Tycoon 3. The demo was fun but the full version just wasn't for some reason. 55 bucks down the drain.

I'm starting to want a gameboy micro, and some kind of cartridge that allows me to play lsdj (there doesn't seem to be a way to buy an actual lsdj cartridge). I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience whatsoever with this stuff - flash cartridges, especially in combination with the gameboy micro, experience with the gameboy micro in general, or any other relevant info... e.g. "don't buy that" or "this one is better than that one because", etc.

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
Dafydd replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
I noticed the smilies box was fixed. ... I think... or at least it was changed. I don't see the pac-man one anywhere now. There's still a number of duplicates there, but oh well. Anyway, the effect where the main page becomes darkened when you're watching a music video doesn't seem to cover all of the page, at least not in firefox. The sidebars, both on left and right, all lists (forum threads etc), the top menu, and the album images all remain in their original color. -
Game Pops - a challenge to your video game music knowlegde
Dafydd replied to stevencoltrane's topic in General Discussion
32%, plus Alex Kidd (I don't know which one in the series though, and I guess I have to write the full name...). Is there a full list somewhere? Anyone who knows #2 is welcome to share the secret over pm. EDIT: Thanks, I got it now. -
Megaman 2 - Wily's Requiem - Male vocalist needed!
Dafydd replied to Nekofrog's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Nice sound! Good luck finding that vocalist... the only one I can think of is Prophet... -
Ninja Gaiden " Emulated" PART 1 re-done ( NES)
Dafydd replied to Emulator's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Haha, nice groove! A little minimalistic for my taste. I really like those beats, but some more meat on the bones would be nice. A fat saw bass, maybe? Or a popping counter-lead arpeggio? A nice start to be sure, but it could use some work. -
Zelda 3 Cavern Theme Remix - needs feedback
Dafydd replied to Jack the Ripper's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I thought I'd commented on this already, but apparently not. I really only have one thing to say - the synth that plays those 8 short notes in the intro needs to go. It sounds absolutely horrible. It doesn't fit in with the rest (orchestral stuff) and it plays notes that just... don't fit in. Ick. EDIT: Ok, I heard the rest of the song. I'm starting to think the awfulness of the synth there in the intro was deliberate and intentional? Oh, and I'm not trying to insult you - I just misunderstood what style you were aiming for. I personally don't like music to be this chaotic, but that's really up to you. -
Thank god for 64th note so you can listen to it all without having to play it then

Awesome. I really like this mix, Vurez, and I'm very glad you finished it at last.

Looking for CnC on creating music for my game
Dafydd replied to inZane's topic in Post Your Original Music!
It helps hearing something like what you had in mind. I like these songs, they feel game-like, and the fact that they're not slick productions doesn't really matter - I'm a big fan of game music not only because of the songs themselves but the sound as well. I don't really know if you can be using other people's music (e.g. MIDI's) in the long run though - it'd probably be easier to convince someone around here to make you some original music than get a license for using existing music, although I'm aware this is really what you had in mind. I also don't really know how I could help you other than by making similar music for you, but I'd be the wrong person to ask for such a thing, at least right now. I'm much too busy doing similar things for other people already. But you already know that. I think your best bet would be contacting the remixers you mentioned in the other thread and ask them up front if they want to help you. Information like the samples you just posted above or examples of remixes you like should help you make them interested. It's difficult to help out when you don't know what you're expected to produce, but you've given enough information by now to start contacting people. You're likely going to have to ask more than just a few - most skilled remixers around here are very busy people. -
Thanks for adding the warcraft 2 avatars up, LT! I'll be switching around a lot, I think, and then go back to my mmgb one. Ok, so I noticed the Peon, Ogre and Ogre-Mage () were not added (nor the cursor, which is fine). Was is because of the cropping or were the images just plain ugly? Here are the original images: LT: With those crops, the images don't really look like anything in particular, so I didn't add those. EDIT: Does that mean I can crop them differently and maybe they'll be added? LT: For the paired faces, you'd have a better shot yes. You could probably even 2 each from those two pics. The peon, you'd have to scale down to fit more of the face into the dimensions though.

Yeah, I think so too. Anyway, it's a shame the title theme is all that people care about, there are 30 other songs in the soundtrack and some of them are really good.

A few pages back I read something about how most submissions given a "no resubmit" never are resubmitted. I agree it's a shame. I'm one of those mixers who never resubmitted, despite the fact that the things that needed changing were really quick fixes, and here's my story. Please remember, I'm not trying to attack or blame anyone here. I sat for 2 weeks doing nothing but making that remix. I was in a finals period, and I think think the main reason why I was able to sit down and work on my mix, and do nothing else, for such a long time was because I was subconsciously trying to escape what I really should be diong - study. Well - I sat day and night with this thing, listening to it constantly in my mp3 player whenever I had to leave home to go shopping or something. I tried to get in touch with several judges, and managed to get two of them to listen to it. Neither really had any complaints, one of them none at all. Since I had already submitted the song, all I could do was wait (but I kept modifying it a little every so often since I noticed it hadn't reached the panel yet). Once the song reached the panel, I waited... and I waited... and waited... wai... zzz. When enough judges (the two I had let listen to it in advance were not among them) had finally voted on my submission, I read the decision thread. Some of the issues that the judges had I didn't really see what they meant by, but most of them were valid, I guess. The problem was that a) The issues were mostly production related. I can tell that my music doesn't really sound as good as other mixes, or other music, does, because I suck at the production parts of remixing. Like I said, I can hear when it doesn't sound good, but I have no idea how to fix it. So I tried to get help in the forum, but none of the comments were very helpful. Sure, you can tell someone to fiddle with the EQ and play with compressors and stuff, but for me, the more I play with the settings, the worse it gets. When I play with an EQ, it always just sounds "different", never "better". I hear the frequencies getting louder of fainter, but I never get it to sound like I'd really want it to. I'd need someone to do the production for me, and I was unable to find anyone to help me as much as I needed them to. After having not touched the mix for several months, when I finally got the verdict, I had lost the will to keep working on the mix. To me, it wasn't perfect, but it was finished and done. I had moved on to other things and couldn't, however much I tried, muster the will to get back working on it. I suffer from most of the symptoms that people with ADD have - if I'm not in the mood to do something, I won't do it, even if I actually "want" to (I know it sounds completely ridiculous to someone who doesn't have it, but there it is). I know this is in no way the judges' problem, and that they are not to blame for any of this, and I certainly don't want or expect them to take any of what I'm writing now into consideration when voting on my or others' future mixes, but to me there seems to be a great number of people in this community who have difficulties finishing what they start, judging from how few people post something in the WiP forum and who don't just leave it as a WiP forever, and a shorter queue would probably result in less people having the above problem with lost interest in their previously submitted remix. There, I'm done with my rant. Remember, I don't want to complain, I'm trying to explain. BTW, does DJP submit stuff or does he direct post his own mixes without consulting the panel? Has anything he made been "rejected"?

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
Dafydd replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
It should at least be possible to post them side by side, if the user's screen resolution allows for it. Especially if you just post 2 of them at once. -
Renoise, huh? I'm definitely going to look into that.

I'd prefer to see haunted woods remixed myself, but yeah, this soundtrack rocks.
