  1. Got a good bit of work done on my WIP and posted it in the private forums. Phew, deadline met
  2. As much as I love the compo concept, the timing isn't the best for me right now (vacation, job issues and other deadlines demanding my time until end of October) so I'm afraid I have to drop out. Sorry for the late notice.
  3. Yup, WIP received and looking forward to the new version I'll check about getting you forum access so you can place the WIP there too.
  4. Basically what Rozo says. And just get started, and learn stuff as you go. As for playing an instrument: 0% necessary. You can go very far with just a DAW and some plugins. I have been doing this music thing for over a decade and only beginning of this year decided to learn to play an instrument, so I dare say it's totally optional. So just get going and have fun on this amazing journey!
  5. Here's some tutorials about using reverb to create depth. There's more on Youtube for sure, but at least it gets you started and explains a few things About the piano sustain, well... I'm no piano expert (and no great player) but maybe just try a recording with less sustain, throw it in the mix and see what you like best? Wrt the violin / microphones I have no personal experience but I know that a violinist I collaborated with used a Shure SM57. Not sure if that's the best mic, but it is what he used.
  6. Having done a remix of this same track that also includes guitar and violins and stuff for an (not yet (ever?)) to be released album, I hope I can give some feedback. I'm no mix expert either, btw All in all it sounds pretty good already and sets the right atmosphere. So arrangement-wise I think you're good. With regards to the performance some things stood out to me: - the piano has a _lot_ of sustain, so much that it makes things a bit muddy - the first violin part is pretty low and raspy, hissy even. - the guitar has some buzzy notes that would benefit from a re-recording. Also on the notes that you pick harder you might want to slightly EQ the highs a bit to make it blend in better Maybe work a bit more on spacing (early reflections and reverb tails) to blend in the guitar and violin a bit more. I listened on headphones, but these recordings seemed to be pretty dry and therefore in-your-face. Adding some tasteful reverb to them should already help. Due to all the piano sustain (which makes it sound like a hall reverb) it seems like the piano is all the way in the back of a hall. But overall it was enjoyable to listen to
  7. According to his blog post Brandon has no idea what to do about it. Hope that doesn't mean everybody will be waiting on each other for another year...
  8. @Chernabogue in your case I wouldn't really worry about it, because you recently updated your WIP and we already shared feedback on it. So you're good already for this check-in, just send us an update whenever you have them
  9. I'm with Rexy on this. I also have a finished track on this, and my loyalties lie mostly with the album so I'd like to see it released regardless of who leads it and where it gets released.
  10. Okay folks, we're one month away from the second check-in deadline, so here's the obligatory reminder. We've been making good progress with the album, but you know what would be awesome? A new update from @Jorito, @GaMeBoX, @evktalo, @zykO, @Audiocolor, @Chernabogue, @DusK, @Lucasonic, @Tuberz McGee, @~Faseeh~, @generaloffensive, @Bowlerhat and @Unknown Alias! You know what would even be more awesomer? A WIP from @KingTiger, @WillRock, @wildfire and @jnWake! Eager to see what they come up with, I bet it's gonna be fab Me and Black Doom are happy to give you feedback on your tracks and help you remove any roadblocks. Since this is the last check-in before the final deadline on October 30, this check-in would be a good opportunity for you to catch up with your friendly album directors and make the album the best it can be! Oh... and we may or may not have some other progress to share with you in the near future
  11. Sad to hear that it came to this, but I'm happy with the proactive and open way you guys try to move things forward.
  12. Already mentioned at least 2 times, but for convenience sake: joah, go for it.
  13. So ultimately it doesn't really matter on which team you're on, as you get a bunch of sources to choose from in either team, right? Anyway, I'm game but I also have a 2 week holiday planned in between, so I'll have to work out with whatever team I end up in how to deal with that.
  14. I hereby explicitly state that I allow OCR to monetize my mixes on Youtube.
  15. We just received an big WIP for Sterlyng Powell's second remix. He did swap his source from Sonic Spinball to the Sonic Shuffle title theme, another Sonic game that doesn't get a lot of attention. Good stuff, and happy to see the progress we've been making lately. Keep 'em coming!
  16. Not usually one to jump in on stuff like this, but nobody made you like this, apart from yourself. Your life, your choices. Blaming on others or situations or expecting them to change is very hard, changing how you look at and deal with things is easier to do. A lesson I constantly have to remind myself of. Glad I did so, because it makes things more enjoyable in the long run.
  17. I already mentioned it on Discord, but frankly I don't care about the YT monetization. For me remixing is just a hobby and I like OCR enough that I wouldn't mind supporting them through ad revenue from YT. Having said that, I do find YT ads a distraction in general (that Yousician ad is really starting to annoy me!) that prevent me from my need for instant gratification, but that's about as far as it goes for me. A big distinction on YT is that the ads are more in-your-face, even if you can skip them after a few seconds. On a site they are more an ignorable glance in the sidebar, and because of my banner blindness I hardly notice these ads anymore.
  18. Typically for the albums I worked on before I only send a wav, not a Flac (or an mp3 for that matter). I'd suggest that's something either the mastering engineer or the album director can do better to make sure it happens consistently wrt. settings and tagging
  19. So uhmm... I'm finishing up my track and was wondering... do you want us to submit a mastered track or a premaster? Couldn't find it in the topic even though I think it was mentioned (might be confused with one of the other albums...)
  20. In other news I made some good progress on the WIP for Crysta. We'll work on it some more before putting it in the WIP topic, but I think it'll be pretty good
  21. No, it's not; it's the first of 2 checkins so,you guys have something to work with and for me and BD to see where we are with things. Final deadline is end of October, but don't let that stop you from sending in a (near) finished track before that
  22. I'll probably need that September 1st deadline because I need to practice the guitar part and my skills are still a bit n00b. I expect it'll be fine tho.
  23. So the deadline has passed, and we received 2 new WIPs, one from Zyko and one from Bowlerhat that we're eager to see the next version of. If you're a remixer working on the album, go check them out in the project forum and give feedback! We also got a sweet update from Tuberz McGee and DusK will send his WIP on August 6th. If you didn't send in anything yet, consider August 6th your extended deadline New check-in deadline is September 18th, roughly 6 weeks from now. After that we have a final deadline on October 30th, any tracks not finished by that date will be cut. Good to see the activity so far people, keep it coming!
  24. So the first check in date is coming up in 8 days, next Sunday, July 31st. We've heard from a few people but no updates from @GaMeBoX, @zykO, @WillRock, @DusK, @wildfire, @Lucasonic, @generaloffensive, @Bowlerhat and @jnWake so far, so I guess this reminder is mostly for them If you have a WIP, want feedback or need any other kind of help, make sure to let me and Black_Doom know. Thanks and good luck!
