I'm also on the fence, but I'll probably bite the bullet as soon as I am in need of retro/chipsounds again. Oh, on vi-control I read somebody suggested recording MSX soundchips (in stead of Atari). If you guys are interested in that, hit me up. I've got 2 MSX computers (MSX2 and turbo R) and nearly all sound chips available for it. I think the Konami SCC chip would be an interesting and unique addition (and an insta-buy for me).

I had the impression that you already sent the current version to the 'mock' judges panel to get some feedback, but maybe I misunderstood? Either way I'm still waiting for the recordings from my collaborators, I expect that can take a few weeks.

OCR03365 - Snatcher "Acoustic Jam at the Lucifer-Alpha"
Jorito replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Great to see some Snatcher music here, Snatcher, SD-Snatcher and Solid Snake OSTs were a great influence on me! As for the track itself, it's pretty close to the original but I like the jazzy jam feel with the guitars. It's less dark than the original MSX version I know so well but I guess that version was also more or less dictated by its SCC soundchip. -
Don't forget that the track will also feature performances by Manji and Stahalamora

Hm, I missed Crysta when I was auditing tracks. Indeed a lovely melody that would be interesting to tackle. But like Odai says, first finish the track you're working on I do have some good news though, this morning my pal and frequent collaborator @Tuberz McGee sent me the missing guitar recordings for my track (pleasant surprise because I didn't expect it yet, it sounds awesome!). So the final version of my track should be coming along quite soon!

I've worked on a few album projects here, but friendly reminders about upcoming deadlines are pretty common. Personally I also like that better, because there's more (public) visibility about progress than what you'd get if it happens behind the scenes. About that progress... I mostly happen to be waiting for recordings for both my Terranigma and my Skies of Arcadia track

Before writing a track for the album I had no knowledge or experience with the game, other than knowing its name. So all I can say is that it looks pretty, but I can't say anything useful about how relevant it is or what nostalgic feelings it brings out. Question tho... once the hero arrives at those mountains, my tracks starts playing, rite?
-
Me too! I cooked up a near complete WIP myself and mostly waiting for the recordings from my collaborators so I can finish the track completely. Can't wait! Oh, can you also add Lauren the Flute as a collaborator to my track? Kind of a late addition, but the track grew into a direction where it was needed

The Archaeologist's Journal (Assorted ReMix Album)
Jorito replied to Mr. Bottle Rocket's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
I'm still being chased by a mummy and as such haven't been able yet to discover and uncover the treasure room inside this mighty pyramid that I found on my way. I expect to need to explore for a while longer to find it, if I can trust these ancient maps I have. -
I'm no music theory expert (the explanation from DS above is both helpful and a bit scary to me), but personally I take the same approach as WillRock. I just take the melodic parts from the tracks, combine them in a genre/style I have in mind and play around with that. Or in short: be creative and see where it leads. So essentially it's mostly just groups of melodies (and rhythms) where you use the parts that you can and ignore the parts you can't. For me, a lot of the recognisability comes from the melodies, and even if you have to change one of the melodies from major to minor or to a different key it's usually still recognisable and enjoyable. Having a goal/general idea of where you want to go is key for me, the bit of music theory I need to reach that goal comes after (in stead of first).

If you're new to this, I'd start with a slow 8 bit song, for the simple reason that with a slower song the notes are generally easier to follow and 8 bit because you typically only have 3 channels max at the same time and the 'instruments' are clear and easier to follow. Find a slow 8 bit track that you like and open it up in an audio editor so you can loop a part in an easy way, because you will probably learn to listen to the parts a lot initially. Try to play along while it loops until you found the right notes and tempo. Also, start with the bass part because these are typically simpler to follow but give you a clear foundation. And above all, use your ears; if it sounds good it is good. Sorry for not giving you specific tracks but a general recipe

rRPC 2016 - The ReMix Role-Playing Competition 2016
Jorito replied to FenixDown's topic in Competitions
Sorry guys, I won't be able to join due to quite a backlog of other OCR commitments. I really love the concept and like a compo just as much as the next person, it's just that the timing isn't good for me. -
Basically you are saying that any FF remix project is dangerous to one Eino's health because of FOMO
-
The glissandos are just portamento overlaps at low velocity. Typically I use it with just velocity and modulation; I use the lazy modwheel-controls-all patch but there's patches where you can control all the details through CC or even with TouchOSC (app for tablets so you can use your tablet as an advanced multi touch controller). But yeah, pick it up! It's pretty darn good even though it sometimes takes some fiddling around.

Any word on a Final Fantasy III, VIII or X OC ReMix album?

Final Fantasy VIII: Collision Course - History
Jorito replied to Brandon Strader's topic in Projects
I have quite a few of track deadlines to deal with, and as such haven't been able to work on my album track yet. I do have a concept in my mind and managed to recruit Final Kingdom to work with me on some vocals, it's just a matter of finding the time and getting the concept out. I'll shoot for that June 20th deadline. -
I think you mean FF XIII with the second to last option. Currently it says FF XII, same as the one above that.
-
Phew, that was a close finish! It's nice that Dracula wins for a change Wonder what the final round would have been like with easier to use source tracks, considering both me and OA had issues getting started. Still, pretty happy with the tracks I created myself, enjoyed quite a few of the other entries and overall had a lot of fun again (and quite a bit of stress ). Sad to see the album idea go, but understandable. I'll be polishing up the tracks I made and submit them regardless (currently waiting for some recordings). Thanks for organising, MindWanderer and until next compo!
-
I think you missed Volume XII-2
-
Thanks to OA and PlanarianHugger for helping in having a proper final round, with a final battle and a nice closing track, I dig that a lot! Interesting too see OA's take on the final round so different from mine, with different sources and a different mood

I actually took track notes this time, for those interested, here's the sources I used and at which points: Sources: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin: Banquet of Madness Castlevania Legends: Vampire Killer (Final Battle) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: Dracula's Castle Castlevania: Wicked Child Castlevania II: Simon's Quest: Last Boss Source usage: 0:19 - 0:38: melody heavily based on Wicked Child intro 0:38 - 1:16 - intro from Banquet of Madness 1:55 - 2:14 - melody A from Wicked Child 2:14 - 2:33 - Vampire Killer (Final Battle) 2:33 - 2:52 - melody A + B from Wicked Child 2:52 - 3:33 - Vampire Killer (Final Battle) + Wicked Child (2:52 - 3:12) 3:36 - 4:04 - Wicked Child 4:14 - 4:33 - Dracula’s Castle excerpt (SotN) 4-33 - 5:02 - Last Boss (Simon’s Quest)
-
I just had a thought that Dracula is like Wile E. Coyote; always having the same plan, trying out lots of different approaches but still always failing and always living to give it another try. Must suck to be either of them
-
Yes, it will definitely be a final and hopefully also a fight! Pretty happy with my entry, hope you guys like it and also eager to find out what OA will come up with!
-
I'm fine with any option where both OA and me get to do something in this final round. It'd be a shame if this last round ends up with only one of us being able to do something. Collabing on what I have and turn it into an epic final track works for me, OA collabing with someone else, I wouldn't even mind helping OA out of his block. Whatever works to make this an interesting final. So... back to OA I guess
