That's what I thought exactly. Man, I really hope Sixto can kick back from this one. -
When I write a bassline, I dont actually build the chord structure with the bass(as was stated in darkeswords essay). I usually leave that to a string or piano instrument. Then I compliment the harmonies and melodies with the bass. I actually (99% of the time) start the bassline on the root note of the chord progression, then, if the progression changes ever measure lets say, I'll take the bassline in the second measure either a 3rd up or down from the root in the progression of that particular measure (if that makes any sense ). Then, the whole time, I'm throwing in "walking" rythms and small steps up or down in the key to give the bassline some depth. As far as bass guitar and double bass being the only basses you can think of, try an incredibly broad definition of a bass instrument. Something like "the bass covers the lower end in the song". There. That could be anything. Low pads, growling synths playing in low octaves, a kazoo transposed down several octaves with an EQ boost. Anything really, you just have to be creative with it. I'm always going through some kind of struggle with composition, but if I just keep writing and really just being stupid while doing so, I'll come across something really cool, and that will breed, and the next thing will expand, and before you know it, you have a good basic structure to add some meat to. I know writing through a block can suck, sometimes it might take a month or two before you get anything, but just know SOMETHING will come eventually. And, feel free to IM or PM me blah blah blah.

I bought these two to teach myself some basic theory and orchestration. Anatomy of the Orchestra Berklee Music Theory Book 1 There not the definative books by any means, but they arent terribly expensive, and they are both great resources and references to look back on.

Yeah, I read that in Keyboard this month. Unfortunatly your probably right, the stutter effect that he does so well will be incredibly overused and lose it's flair, which is very unfortunate. But yeah, throw in a vote on slayer for me. -

Im not looking for any $$... but i did notice that the remix project "the american album" something, had a donation button on it, so i was just bringin it up you silly.. I figured there may have been thoughts about putting one on. Well, I don't know for sure, but seeing as "the american album" was an effort by Mazedude alone, he probably just had a donation button because it was on his website. It most likely didnt have anything to do with his project. Just clearing things up, it was intended for the project. The American Album was originally intended for a OneUp Studios release, legalised and everything. Circumstances made Mazedude change that to a free release, instead putting a donation system to get some money back from all the work he put in. He could do that legally because it wasn't directly involved with the music, more a 'on the side, give money because he deserves it' thing. AHA!! Well, there we go. Mystery solved. -

Well, if anyone else decides to drop, I SUPPOSE I could pick up their tracks. All I'm writing at the moment are originals for fun, so, maybe a serious song would help me focus. -

It might be a good idea for some of us who have been done a really long time to go back and just make sure some of the production or other aspects of our songs are up to snuff, and polish things up. Just a thought. I plan to do so. -
