  1. i've actually done that for a class project. i found this MIDI spec: http://www.ibiblio.org/emusic-l/info-docs-FAQs/MIDI-doc/ and of course an easy way to find out whats going on is to press a button on your controller and look at the signal coming out of it on the scope
  2. if it's really distorting, maybe try lowering the volume in the sound properties? I've found that cheaper sound cards tend to distort very easily even when set to moderate volumes
  3. u gotta get a FLASH! i find that a flash is probably the most important thing you could carry around.. it's also not just for indoors.. it's essential outdoors too. check out Strobist if you wanna see what you can do with flash.. see Lighting 101 http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ i do update my Flickr page.. but obviously i don't post the pics in this thread.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wushuplaya/
  4. that's not true when talking about acoustic instruments. since they have set tunings, certain notes sound different than others, for example playing the one octave harmonic on the E string of a violin.. you wouldn't be able to get the same sound if it was Eb. piano strings aren't dampened once you go high enough (forgot which note it is), so it will sound different if you transpose stuff etc, etc, etc...
  5. i guess Mega Man fits into the "decent controls" category...

stuck on 3:4 now. the hit detection is startin to bother me... i have my lasers all up in that red bar, but it WONT GO UP. i think i've had enough of this.. it would be better if the physics were more concrete and not so loose

stuck on 2:5... anyways time to go to sleeeeep
  8. i thought this was gonna have noise and reverb correction... but it's only EQ/phase... meh
  9. there's a lot of subtleties to every kind of music, it's not just DnB. and what's wrong with not putting mind power into listening to music? i've always thought there were 2 sides to listening to music... listening with your heart and listening with your brain. i feel like listening with your heart, just feeling the music, is the most basic and primitive response to music and is always a part of the musical experience. listening with your brain may or may not come into play much, depending on how you listen to music. but i think it's not a requirement of listening to music the "correct" way.. only engaging the heart is
  10. you'll probably be waiting a long loooong time
  11. good stuff all around from everybody... BUT what the hell happened to Richter's and jm's BLANKA track?!? that was my favorite from Blood on the Asphalt.. i was expecting to see it here
  12. OMG NO WAI U CAN DISTINGISH MP3 FROM TEH FLACS! does it even matter why some people want lossless? people prefer what they prefer, doing a blind AB test or whateva isn't going to change that and I still haven't heard a good reason why there can't be 2 torrents, one for mp3 and one for FLAC. and bandwidth is not a good reason.. this is a torrent afterall
  13. i've seen these in person at Guitar Center... i thought they were really wobbly and not sturdy and cheaply made. it could have been just the display model, but i don't think i would buy a pair
  14. haha i never thought this would be compared to squarepusher... i don't think this sounds nearly as CRAZYY and DEMENTED as his stuff. but i guess i can see how the intro with drums + bass might be squarepusher-esque
  15. i'm using Ubuntu as my main OS.. only dual booting to windows to do music or photoshop or video stuff
  16. is the wav actually clipping (going past 0dB) or is the sound just distorting even though it's lower than 0dB? you might wanna check the input levels on the soundcard are you using the correct output jack on the amp? is your bass active or passive? if it's active, is there an "active" input on your amp?
  17. i think you're talking about Fender Rhodes odafbnR4E6Q
  18. do you have a shoulder rest? you should get one if you don't have one. you should NOT be resting the neck on your left hand. you should be able to hold the violin with just your neck, and your left hand should be free to move anywhere as for right hand, i'm sure with time you'll get used to it. right hand (both hands actually) should be very relaxed and you shouldn't really have to grip it hard
  19. well heres some articles about correcting posture: http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/heal_that_hunchback http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/neanderthal_no_more_part_i http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/neanderthal_no_more_part_ii http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/neanderthal_no_more_iii http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/neanderthal_no_more_part_iv http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/neanderthal_no_more_part_v there's a lot more articles on t-nation but i don't remember what they're called. but if you look up author Eric Cressey, he has a lot of posture-oriented articles but really, the best way is to not spend so much time sitting. humans aren't made to sit all day.. it's best to be constantly changing your posture, from sitting to standing to lying etc. take breaks when sitting for long periods of time, and work on some of the exercises outlined in the articles above. also, it takes a looong time and consistent effort to heal your posture. the damage was done from years and years of sitting all day.. it's gonna take a similar effort to reverse that effect
  20. i also got rings from coach sommer.. but i didn't buy the book. i dunno.. it doesn't seem necessary.. i have more than enough things to keep me busy on rings. and there's plenty of stuff on youtube already
  21. it's all in the DIET. diet is as important (if not more important) than training/exercise. you won't get bigger if you don't actually gain weight.. although you will "look bigger" and have better defined muscles that's most likely a postural problem. if you sit all day (like in front of a computer like most people), then your posture will deteriorate. your posterior chain (hamstrings, glutes, etc.) will get weaker, your hip flexors will tighten, and your core will also get weaker. when that happens, your entire spine will slump, leading to forward angled hips and rounded shoulders. and also your weak core will allow your gut to spill out rather than holding it in tight anyways... my particular goal is to strengthen my core. i've done a fair bit of research into this.. that's where i came to the realization above. after spending too much time sitting and slouching over the years, my core is pathetically weak. i can't do wushu (mostly just the kicks which require a lot of core) like i used to.. and i also probably can barely run a mile (which is NOT an cardio/endurance thing.. it's muscular conditioning since i can cycle decently) and a great resource for more hardcore people who are into the exercise physiology side of things, a great website with tons of articles is T-nation
  22. i'm not gonna argue prices or Logic vs. FL. but i think one thing is pretty certain... and that's a desktop is more flexible and is generally faster and more powerful. so unless you neeeed portability, there really isn't much reason to go with a laptop
  23. guitar tab is already hard enough to read.. this is even mo ridiculous. and even if u get good at it.. u still can't read real sheet music, u could only read piano tab
  24. nothing inspired me to get into music.. i was always a musician from the beginning (started playing piano when i was 4). as for getting into arranging vg music.. all the classic NES/SNES music i loved caused me to start arranging/transcribing when i was about 11 or so. SMB3, Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Kart, Super Adventure Island.. all that good stuff
