  1. HAWT haha Notorious BIG at the end of classical vid?
  2. i really hate how music theory classes present things as RULES. it's made to sound like the rules were created out of nowhere and given to us like the ten commandments... YOU SHALL NOT USE PARALLEL OCTAVES music theory explains what people did (harmonically). someone analyzed Bach's voicings and discovered that he never used parallel octaves. that was just Bach's style, since he probably thought they sounded bad. they are in no way RULES.. but someone decided to teach them as RULES, not merely "stylistic patterns of Bach" and now we have misconceptions about theory with people thinking its a set of rules that governs the way music works.. like the way math theory governs numbers. there's people thinking music is based on theory, when it's the other way around... theory is based on music ok.. i dunno where i'm going with this, just wanted to say that THERE ARE NO RULES
  3. ok.. lots of different definitions of music theory.. my definition is a bit different: music is a totally abstract concept, and music theory is just to way to put it in more concrete terms. most often this is done using notes/harmony, ie. writing chords and analyzing them, since that is the easiest to put onto a sheet of paper and talk about. very little has been done to theororize other aspects of music.. for example how do you explain why a certain beat is more "danceable" than another? (actually i just recently watched a victor wooten seminar that sort of talks about this.. learning music vs learning notes. you can go to http://www.bassplayer.tv/ and click Artists Features -> Victor Wooten and watch the Ten Elements of Music sections. it's worthwhile to watch.. Vic is a great teacher) i disagree with the statement that learning music theory will make you a better musician. it will allow you to translate abstract musical concepts into concrete terms so you can write it down or talk to people about it.. that's it. it won't make you more creative.. if you hit a wall as a musician then you better try to find some insipiration to answer the OP's question... yea learn both piano and theory at the same time. piano is very conducive to theory since you can literally see all the notes laid out
  4. sounds to me like the director is just unorganized and doesn't have his act together. you should tell him (if you haven't already) that you can have the music done X days after they send you footage or detailed instructions on mood, tempo, instrumentation, etc. if they can't give you that, then just drop the project cuz it sounds really unorganized i think you should be clear with them and demand the footage by Dec X, or you will not do the music. whatever you do, don't stay in this idle state where everything is wish washy and unclear. they may be unorganized, but doesn't mean you have to be too
  5. General MIDI would be the way to go... unless you're doing music that is more about production than arranging. then i guess you would have to send wav/mp3s
  6. i'm supported by the funds and grants that we get.. so i guess it's semi permanent semi temporary.. i'm involved in a couple research projects... wireless camera motes, body sensors for monitoring people, i also run a motion capture system which is open to anybody on campus. so if you or anybody you know wants to do motion capture, i can hook you up
  7. ummm.. i did my undergrad at berkeley a while ago, so no need to welcome me. if anything i should probably be welcoming YOU anyways, i work in Cory in the EECS department as an engineer. 330 Cory Hall, come say hi to me sometime... actually you can't get in without cardkeey.. oh well
  8. i work at UC Berkeley now. been here for a few months already...
  9. dang, that was right in my backyard... i haven't been to cal football game in ages tho
  10. ok since i got home i've been able to listen to this on better speakers... the organ has got to be a Hammond B3.. it's basically THE organ found in jazz/funk/gospel. check out this clip: the beginning is all talk.. just start watching around 3:00, he plays a very similar sound edit: maybe this one sounds closer.. also it sounds like your organ chords are up an inversion. i hear the top notes as B A, instead of D C your drums sound too compressed and the attack is too slow. you can hear the snare rattle.. but the original snare is tighter and snappier. nothing you can do other than to keep looking for the right samples... btw this song really reminds me of The Meters.. check out their stuff for similar funk.. and maybe you can sample their drums too haha
  11. this sounds like a classic old skool funk band setup. all i hear are drums, bass, organ, wah wah guitar, and a few bongo hits. i have no idea where you hear congas.. i think you're referring to the wah guitar that does a slow wah if you're trying to get the exact sound... that will be really tough, especially with the drums. you could probably find a better organ though.. there's always tons of organ patches
  12. i've had timing problems when collabing with someone using frooty loops. apparently it keeps track of time differently from sonar and other programs, so when i exported my track from sonar starting from measure X, it wouldn't line up properly if you import it at measure X in FL i dunno if they fixed this problem, but in any case if you're using sonar for everything you shouldn't have any alignment problems. just set the same tempo for your projects and line up everything to the nearest measure.. it should be fine btw someone mentioned recording hiccups due to lack of cpu power... in sonar, if this happens, the timing is still fine, but the audio track will contain pops
  13. XMPlay is great.. really small and uses a constant 3 megs of ram. i would be using it now, but NSFplug doesn't work properly on it. so i'm still using good 'ol Winamp
  14. to repeat what other people have said KNOW THY CHORDS what kinda pianist would you be if you didn't play chords? what kinda guitarist would you be if you didn't play chords? those are the 2 instruments that can easily play chords, and are expected to play chords.. so you better play them chords
  15. geez, sonar 7?? i'm still using sonar 4. i'll probably keep it that way.. it has all i need without the bloat
  16. recording in the car.. thats crazeee. especially when he has to set it up and click the record buttons and all that
  17. have you hooked up all this stuff to your laptop and tested it? if it was me, i'd be very worried about the reliability of using a laptop, especially if you'll be running a lot of stuff. who knows when your hard drive will start spinning or your VSTi will crash or a random AIM message will go UHOH... lots of things can go wrong i'd probably do lots of stress testing of the software, and try to use external hardware wherever possible
  18. i just started playing this.. my username is xafofo if anybody wants to play. still tryin to get the hang of the "power slide".. it's pretty hard to do
  19. its impossible to cleanly extract vocals, but you can at least make the background less apparent you can extract the "center" of the stereo image, which is usually where the vocals reside, and cut out the stuff on the sides. then you can do a bandpass EQ for vocal frequencies. then you can cut off the peaks of the drums (assuming the track hasn't been overly compressed) of course this alters the vocals quite a bit, but at least it's something.. and could work depending on what you wanna do with it
  20. i didn't read the article.. but it has always been hard to make it as a musician, and always will be. the internet may have changed a few things, but the economics and market remain the same. if anything, it's made the market worse since people are probably willing to pay less for music nowadays, but that's offset by lower production costs. so in the end, i don't think much has changed in terms of earning a living as a musician... musicians are for the most part still STARVING ARTISTS
  21. i've only had a chance to skim through the tracks, but everythang sounds good so far NICE WORK
  22. i might go if i knew where the hell you guys are meeting. but i'm in berkeley with no car and only BART as my feet so have fun ya'll
  23. yea if u check the EXIF data it should say Nikon D80. I'm using a Sigma 18-50 F2.8 Macro lens. these shots were a test of ISO1600...
