How to sing Death Metal without ruining voice
Legion303 replied to Lunahorum's topic in Music Composition & Production
Growl from your diaphragm, not from your throat. An exercise I picked up is this: make a quiet hissing sound with your tongue on the roof of your mouth (i.e., an "S" sound) and as you exhale, gradually increase the volume until you're giving it as much pressure as possible. That comes from the diaphragm, and that's the feel you want when growling death metal vox. For more tips, this is the google search I used: "death metal vocals" tips -steve -
Secret of Mana - The Earth Speaks
Legion303 replied to rhythmicon's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I like the idea, but almost 6 minutes of the same short theme made my teeth ache. The panning on the hats was too extreme for me, and the intro drums had the kick panned awkwardly hard right. The samples and production were very clean, but the repetition just didn't work for me. -steve -

Problem: Audio clips and tempo changes
Legion303 replied to Legion303's topic in Music Composition & Production
OK, I think I understand the problem now. FL is messing with the audio file when the tempo changes. How do I get it to not do that, and just play the file from an absolute time marker? I have blank space at the beginning of the file, and the audio kicks in when it should time-wise (which is why everything works when I play from the beginning). But if I move the cursor to where the audio should start, it seems like FL starts in with its timestretching bullshit. -steve -
So do you recommend them or not? Analoq: That's not humming. FAIL. -steve
-
So you're saying he needs smaller walls? Shit, this is confusing. Analoq: I'm your fan, and I think you should stop using instruments altogether. Just hum the parts from now on. Get started. -steve
-
Argi: I'm stating a reality, and that's how OCR has been from its inception. "Don't just take the melody and slap a drum beat over it" has been a mantra around here for a very long time. I didn't say that means it's not a good remix or cover, just that it wouldn't be accepted. Per submission rules, arrangement counts for something like 40% of the consideration, I believe. -steve

FL Studio 7 Problem - What's this sound?
Legion303 replied to tyrog's topic in Music Composition & Production
(PM) Hi! I am that mad dude of Tyrog who needs help with FL Studio 7. I get I ought not post such request in the forum, so I thought to ask you this as PM. Can you help me to remove that sound from FL 7? You cannot help me or you will not, no problem. It's just I don't use to buy on-line neither I trust the on-line shopping system and I'd preferer not to waste money buying a program I could use only as a hobby and not as a profession. If you can help me, thanks. If you don't want, don't worry Thanks for the feedback Before I bought FLS last year, I'd pirated it since version 2. And I admit that I haven't (yet) purchased all the software I use. And I'm still not going to help you. You need to learn that when I mock you for asking about warez on the forums, I am NOT dropping subtle hints that you should PM me for help stealing software. I will not. Neither will anyone else. Either buy it or find free software that does what you need. Did that get through to you, or did you want to piss me off some more? -steve -
My biggest issue with it is that you stretched 30-40 seconds of source into almost five and a half minutes. It's still the same tempo as the original and doesn't really deviate from the source. So what you have here is a source melody repeated several times with different instruments, and although it sounds clean and you used decent samples, I guarantee you it will not pass the judging panel. That said, I think you would benefit from stripping it down to the basics and reworking the melody to give it a different feel from the original. Look to Children of the Monkey Machine's depressing Bubble Bobble (Asphyxiation) remix for inspiration on how far you can deconstruct your source. -steve
-
This is a pretty decent cover so far. You'll notice I used the word "cover." I disagree with Radiowar. I think the source lends itself perfectly to folk metal along the lines of Troll. If you're familiar with the genre, the rearrangement pretty much writes itself. -steve

FL Studio 7 Problem - What's this sound?
Legion303 replied to tyrog's topic in Music Composition & Production
[Legion303] no one on OCR is going to encourage some newbie to pirate the shit [soc] hahah [soc] somebody has to [Legion303] I'm waiting for him to PM me asking what the other methods are for getting rid of the static :/ [Legion303] "give the developers a BJ" Thanks for making my prediction come true, sort of. -steve -
WIP--Clive Barker's Undying (NEED VOCALIST!)
Legion303 replied to Legion303's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
v1.1 has been finished. Please have a listen: http://neutronstar.org/music/Steve_Pordon-Undying-Lizbeth's_Reawakening.mp3 You were dead-on about the piano; I did roll off too much bass. It sounds much better now. I also took the opportunity to boost the velocities of some of the notes which were nearly buried in the first render. I re-did the vox without the reverb, and as an added bonus the bassline seems to have come out more when I reworked the vox. This should address the majority of your concerns. Thanks for the feedback! -steve -
True, but regardless of his terminology, he still asked about EQ. -steve

My newest remix has 4 separate tempos (140, 170, 180, and 200), as well as a time signature change in the middle (12/8 to 4/4 and back). I did guitars in another application and dropped the resulting wave file in FL as an audio clip. The problem is, it won't play back correctly (EDIT: specifically, the audio doesn't synch up like it should) unless I play the song from the beginning, which kind of defeats the purpose of me using audio clips. Clearly the file needs to read the tempo automation, but it happens even if I place the cursor right before the tempo change. Is there any way to make this work without slicing and cutting the blank space at the beginning? I like files that I can drop into any application without a bunch of manual positioning... -steve

There are several ways to remove the sound. The best way is to buy the synth. -steve -
WIP--Clive Barker's Undying (NEED VOCALIST!)
Legion303 replied to Legion303's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Yes, or do it manually, and then it sounds like two different pianos. I'll revisit the piano when I look at the vox tonight. It's entirely possible I rolled off too much. -steve -
WIP--Clive Barker's Undying (NEED VOCALIST!)
Legion303 replied to Legion303's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Thanks for the comments. I just loaded it up again, and I'll reply point by point: Vox: These have been scooped as much as possible without losing the power behind them. I don't have any problem hearing and understanding them, but then I'm intimately familiar with the lyrics so maybe my brain is filling in. The piano is tinny...I rolled off bass freqs to avoid clashing with the kick drum when it comes in. Next time I'll try sidechain compression instead but I'm not comfortable enough with it to jump in just yet. I re-loaded the kick into my editor and I can see a spread of about 5dB between the loudest and softest hits in a roll. I did apply heavy compression to let it slice through the guitars and bass so maybe that's what you're hearing. I personally don't notice a machinegun effect, either in the mixdown or when I solo the kick track. And speaking of bass, I hear it at the exact right level through my studio phones (flat response), and a little too heavy on my surround/subwoofer system. -steve PS: I just realized something else about the vox...one of the many effects I used appears to have applied some sort of reverb to them. That would certainly rob them of power. I'll go back and see if I can kill the reverb, and see if that pops the vocals a little better. -
Sky Sanctuary Rock (starting over)
Legion303 replied to TheGuitarHero's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I like the arrangement so far, but I'm not familiar with the original. Amplitube 2 isn't going to work on FLS. I can get it to load and even make sounds, but as soon as I stop the playback it stops processing anything else until I restart FLS. It works great in CuBase but if you don't have that you can try it in something like Audacity or Computer Music's free sequencer (though you have to buy the magazine to get it). Whenever you do get Amplitube 2 sorted, make sure you double-track your rhythm guitars and pan them hard left and right for a beefier sound. -steve -
