  1. Doug Arley, you are the master of making my computer look pretty. I have to give you props for maintaining your stuff. I didn't even know there was a problem and you fixed it. That's how hardcore you are.
  2. What the hell? This is exactly what spleen was talking about - you automagically assume I don't know how to do these "tricks". I understand EVs and I've wavedashed in Melee. But that doesn't mean I want to ruin my gaming experience with these things. Just because you can do something advanced doesn't mean that it will make the game more fun. I play games for fun - not be better than the next guy. So stop assuming that because I don't, I can't. Insulting my intelligence is juvenile. Forget, this is stupid to argue about. So, uh, how about Fox's new (ugly) face?
  3. What? Who said anything about competition? I'm against taking the spirit of competition (good) to the extreme where you don't have fun with the game. Having a little competition between friends can lead to a great time. Exploiting silly glitches (and yes, wavedashing is a glitch - clearly never meant to be a legitimate technique from the beginning) to win isn't what any Nintendo game is about - EVs in Pokemon, snaking in Kart, or any of the already mentioned things in SSB. Nintendo has said again and again that they make games for people to have fun. I think people forget that when they immerse themselves in that totally competitive attitude.
  4. This saddens me greatly. We've been seeing the same basic moves for characters like Fox and Captain Falcon for two games. Years. I was really hoping for a full redesign for all the characters. But after looking through the updates, I'm getting the feeling this will be much of the same stuff as a base, with the new stuff piled on top. No real game mechanic change. My greatest wish is that Sakurai somehow does something that makes this game utterly distasteful to tourney players. I absolutely hate the wavedashing, bair, etc. stuff that gets thrown around. Brawl is not being made for you - it's being made for the other 95% of Melee players who enjoyed what the game is actually about. Flame me if you want, but I just think the tourney players miss the point of the game.
  5. Hm. That was my first instinct as well. But seeing how well Bethesda did Elder Scrolls in first-person... I'm on the fence about it. Could be a good change of pace for Fallout. Not sure how the diehard fans would react to that, though. I'd welcome it, though - combat in Fallout 1 and 2 wasn't my favorite. My biggest concern is that they pay the plot the attention it deserves. Being on the East Coast will be very interesting. EDIT: Apparently, Bethesda said they're going to keep SPECIAL. More points to them, I guess.
  6. Argh, yes. I guess I kind of got used to it eventually when I used to play Melee tons, but I was playing Brinstar Depths yesterday, and I couldn't see what the hell I was doing on the bottom island piece, and ended up dying. Not so much on Rainbow Cruise, but on Big Blue, when most people are up on the higher platforms, jumping down onto the cars can be just plain guesswork, since they are covered by the damage counts. I don't see it. Whenever I have to play semi-motion controlled games (less motion than Wii Sports, around the ballpark of Godfather), I end up siting up, rather than my standard reclined position that I used for PS2 and 'Cube games. Maybe it's just me, but when I do motion control, I like to have my elbows free to do whatever. So personal preference, I guess.
  7. Ah, shit. I was getting all excited about this, and even started downloading atma's special pack stuff, when I realized that I uninstalled this game just a few days ago to make room on my external HDD. I kept Jedi Knight Jedi Academy (which I like better, for some perverse reason), but that does me no good with you guys. Dang.
  8. Jeezus. Drop it, you guys. What a way to spoil a perfectly fine thread. Anyway, I started playing Melee again, and I guess I never noticed how compact the stages are. I'd like to see a few more Hyrule Temple-sized levels. I don't want a whole game made out of them, but a wider selection of large stages might be nice.
  9. Love the update. I'll probably be using the GCN controller the most (I just booted up Melee again last night for the first time in ages and everything still came instinctively), but I can see myself playing with 'mote + 'chuck for fun. Just to mix it up. The updates just keep getting better and better. I enjoy the way Sakurai writes them - informative without divulging too much, with a little bit of humor.
  10. Speaking of unlockables, I didn't realize exactly how many of the total number of characters had to be unlocked in Melee. Nearly half, IIRC. That's interesting, RD, I hadn't heard that about the third-parties. Doesn't surprise me, though.
  11. Source? I didn't hear anything about that... And where did you hear about Pit? If that's true, that's interesting.
  12. Not to mention that we think they haven't shown us any characters you have to unlock.
  13. My thoughts exactly. The only thing that I think lends credence to the "ZSS after Final Smash" theory is that Sakurai said you can use it only once. (per life, I guess? probably not per match... although now that I think about it, that could make it more interesting... but I'm sure you'll be able to tweak that in the match settings anyhow.) Yeah, sorry. Really wasn't directed at you, you just got me thinking about it.
  14. Not sure why everyone is certain that after her Final Smash, Samus changes into Zero Suit Samus. Really, it seemed to me much more of a cinematic license or whatever than actually explaining how ZSS worked. I mean, ZSS got her whole own introduction ("Newcomer") just like the other full characters. Honestly, I hope it's either a.) a deal like Zelda and Sheik or b.) ZSS is just a whole different character. Maybe just wishful thinking on my part. Anyone else think that way?
  15. This thread brings back a lot of memories. Same as everyone else: Age of Empires 2 Masters of Orion (especially 3) The Incredible Machine (any in the series, except probably The Even More IM) Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Grim Fandango That's all that comes to mind immediately.
  16. Yeah. Just getting the server index here too. Hope they didn't get wiped or something. EDIT: Getting 404s on all the pages linked from Google (Character Specific, Brawl Character Discussion and so on) too. Server went down, maybe? Hope everything was backed up.
  17. I don't really understand why you're complaining. Instead of pleasing the very small hardcore tourney crowd, he's giving out info that most casual (and more than casual) players - a much larger segment of the population - can enjoy. Plus, characters are going to be much closer-guarded pieces of info, probably given out closer to release (or not at all before release). Either way, Nintendo's going to sell this game out the butt. With or without these blog posts. I find them refreshing to read, and informative at the same time. So, basically what everyone else has said.
  18. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy trumps Jedi Outcast in every way possible. JA actually came out second or something crazy like that. Personally, I can't stand JO.
  19. hoshit. That's a crazy old throwback for me. I loved that game. Thank you OCR, for a piece of my childhood back.
  20. I remember playing a demo or summin' of this. Hard as hell, IIRC, but very pretty. Thanks for the heads-up Coop, never even heard of this site. Must add to my daily checklist.
  21. I got a Creative Zen Touch, hell, three, maybe four Christmases ago and it really changed my perspective. I live by that MP3 player still, despite it being features) they put out now, but I love Creative's reliability and interface, which is thousands of times better than the scrollwheel on the ipod. I don't know much about the iAudios, but I can't root for Creative enough. Solid products, all the way around.
  22. Looking at , he's not a tiny guy. Great piano player, though.
  23. To address the original question the thread poses - maybe because they didn't want two characters played by the same person? I don't remember the VA in MGS1 very well, but it's very possible someone thought that they sounded too similar. Just my $0.02. As to TTS vs. original, I like Twin Snakes better. Going back to PS1 graphics degrades the experience IMO (as much as we'd like to believe graphics don't make the game). Plus the cutscenes, even if they are arguably over-the-top (and for the series, they really aren't - MGS3 has just as many 'whoacrazy' moments), really add a lot to the game. Plus, the new and improved Sniper Wolf death scene was pretty cool. As for the music, yeah. Some of it was a downgrade. But the cutscene on the first elevator up to the helipad (where Snake loses the diving gear) had some bitchin' tunes. Not that it makes up for the (more numerous) nixed tunes.
  24. I wouldn't really say that, RD. Warhammer's game design drew from other tabletop strategy wargames at the time, but got its aesthetic from classic fantasy mainstays not necessarily from the gaming community - hence all the talk about LotR. EDIT: Bahamut, if we want to argue origins of RTS games, I think the common base for most modern RTS games is Dune II by Westwood. It wasn't the first, but really, it's not that much different from what we're still seeing today. I was saying that the RTS genre (Starcraft included) owes a lot to the pioneers of tabletop wargames - they really created a foundation that was moved to a digital format on computers, and was adapted for real-time games later on. Just want props given where props are due.
  25. You make me laugh. Here's to hoping you are joking. Protip: Games Workshop has been around since 1975 and single-handedly revolutionized tabletop gaming, from which Starcraft and the entire RTS genre is derived. Sorry, no beans. You absolutely missed the point. CE was talking about the transition of Warhammer (fantasy, LotR-ish) to Warhammer 40k.
