noTuX
I also agree with DarkeSword.I'm glad we're trying to make Sonic not do what he was originally meant to do: run through the damn stage as FAST as possible. A big-ass battle sword? I'll play Zelda if I want to slash shit. Amen. Why does Sega HAVE to make Sonic's adventures so damn complicated? He went from trying to save his little animal friends from turning into robots and just collecting rings and emeralds, to saving the city from a giant mutant jelly creature, to saving the world from a giant crashing satellite stuck on the ass of a giant monster, and so forth... I think if they produced a game that pretty much went back to Sonic's old roots from the glory days of SEGA Genisis, but used the graphics processing power of today's generation of gaming systems, they could completly turn the Sonic franchise around. In other words, simply toning down the epic scope of the games and making it more of an adventure rather than a doomsday scenario. ...Though to be fair, the Death Egg presented a similar doomsday scenario to the space station. Well, except about the part of the giant monster. ...Seriously though. Adventure, not self-serious epic. That's what we really need.
The Pezman
I think if they produced a game that pretty much went back to Sonic's old roots from the glory days of SEGA Genisis, but used the graphics processing power of today's generation of gaming systems, they could completly turn the Sonic franchise around. Believe it or not, I think that's what they tried to do with Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Heroes was just whatthefuck, and I lost my faith after that. But the Sonic Adventures were a serious attempt to bring Sonic into 3D, and personally I don't think they were bad. The mere fact that they tried innovation beyond running through a level was enough to interest me. Imagine if Sega had never gone 3D and instead churned out Sonic games that were like the previous ones. They'd be derided for same old, same old, never taking chances and trying new things. Unfortunately, they've hit the opposite extreme.
Triad Orion
Imagine if Sega had never gone 3D and instead churned out Sonic games that were like the previous ones. They'd be derided for same old, same old, never taking chances and trying new things. Unfortunately, they've hit the opposite extreme. This is true too. While I'm certainly a big fan of the old 2-D outings, truthfully, Sonic's leap into 3-D was inevitable. Fan demand would've led to it one way or the other. Whether we would've gotten a better product is debatable. And yes, Sega gets credit for trying new things. I don't fault them for trying Sonic Heroes, for example. I do fault them for not polishing it. I don't fault them for trying the epic storylines Adventures 1 and 2 used. But in the long run, it encouraged poor, unbelievable "extreme" writing. Really, the issues all stem from terrible quality control. There are three methods to creating great games from ideas: Trying new things, reinventing old ones to make them seem new, or polishing existing ideas to a mirror sheen. The problem is, all three paths require quality control, care, and attention to detail; something that Sonic Team has shown to lack since the beginning of the 3-D era, and has continued to slip on since. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of situation. This is especially true if the company is all about the bottom line rather than putting out a good product. And let's face it, in the real world, the bottom line matters most. For better or worse, Sonic has enough brand loyalty that he'll continue to move games until he's dead and buried underneath a concrete block. Only thing we can do is to hope that Sega suddenly remembers the idea of quality control and exercises good judgment in fixing what's broken. ...It may happen. Someday. NeoForte
News on Gameplay has trikled in: http://www.blueblur.org/2008/07/21/sonic-and-the-black-knight-nintendo-power-details/ -Developed by the same people as Sonic and the Secret Rings -”This time, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to the mythical realm of King Arthur, but it seems the fabled monarch has somehow been corrupted and now rules the land as the tyranical Black Knight.” -Uses a similar storybook device as Secret Rings -”As Sonic runs along, a simple flick of the Wii remote will execute a basic slash, which is enough to dispatch most low-level grunts.” -More advanced swordplay consists of the ability to thrust, parry, and even pull off a buzz-saw maneuver midjump. -”During out demo, we saw the hedgehog leap from a high precipice, then thrust the blade into a wall to slow his decent, sparks flying impressivly as steel cut through brick” -”Combat is integrated in such a way that most of the time you can slice through any who stand in your path without even slowing down” -Sonic is controlled with the Control Stick. -”Our hero begins his quest as a mere knave. Only by becoming a full-fledged knight will he have any hope of defeating King Arthur.” -”his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor” -If you help civilian townfolk in need of assistance, you’ll earn points toward knighthood. If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit. -”At the end of each stage, the game tallies your good and not-so-good deeds and updates your rank accordingly. -You can purchase items from residents. “Sonic can aquire everything from gauntlets to magical tomes to new swords, and when equipped, each article bestows him with a unique benefit.” -About 200 items in all, with some being able to be combined with others to make new ones. -You have the option to go online and trade items with friends. -Rings come in burlap sacks instead of monitors. -Sonic uses magic elementals to help him do various things, such as a bounce pad or a speed boost. They look like chao heads. The red ones give him a jump and the blue give Sonic a speed boost. -Sonic can cross large gaps by firing a ballista and grinding the rope to the other side. -”On the audio side, veteran composer Jen Senoue is taking a smiliar approach, injecting familiar Sonic themes with a Celtic flavor.” -”Each stage has multiple branching paths and searching for townsfolk and treasure chests provides an element of exploration that recalls Sonic’s early Genesis days.” -”the camera will occasionally pan to a side-scrolling perspective for a quick dose of classic 2-D action” -SBK Bringing back the skill system from Secret Rings, but they’re trying not to have the skill system interfere with the game’s tempo this time around. -The mission structure also returns but the developers hope to make it less arduous. -”And there will be no dinosaur eggs!” -”Just as they subbed in for such characters as Ali Baba and Aladdin in Sonic and the Secret Rings, a number of familiar faces will assume Arthurian personas in SBK.” -Other characters beside Sonic are playable, but it is entirely optional to play as them. -Knuckles, who can hold two swords at once, and Shadow have been confirmed so far. -A new special guage will “bestow him with similarly impressive powers. The meter fills gradually whenever Sonic vanquishes an enemy or snags a purple elemental, and when it reaches a certain point you can unleash a powerful combination attack capable of tearing through multiple foes in quick succession.” -The team knows of the faults of the recent series and are hoping to fix it with this game. Bleck
that actually doesn't sound so bad but then again neither did secret rings -”his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor” A TALE OF TWO SWORDS LOST TO THE AGES If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit. haha -Knuckles, who can hold two swords at once, and Shadow have been confirmed so far. if knuckles has the exact same gameplay as sonic then they have finally done something right
Xenon Odyssey
-”On the audio side, veteran composer Jen Senoue is taking a smiliar approach, injecting familiar Sonic themes with a Celtic flavor.” Only thing I found any interest in on this list. Azure Prower
-”the team behind Sonic and the Black Knight is keenly aware of the franchise’s past missteps, and their enthusiasm for doing right by the series is infections” What? Is a good Sonic game now considered a desiese by the Sonic Team? o.O
Wipomatic
So it's basically Secret Rings but with king Arthur instead of Arabian nights? Well Secret Rings was certainly a lot better than Shadow and Sonic 2006 but I'm still more hopeful about Unleashed.

Salluz
^Y'all make me scream. I've been pretty disillusioned with Sonic games nowadays... it's like they're trying too hard in one way while not trying hard in another... I guess that I'm speaking of when they make their products look good, but they end up tasteless like plastic fruit.

It may have something to do with the staff. Shit, if I made a game, it would take time, but peeps would be busting nuts on the release dates. You sound like someone who should make their own series. Castle
For anyone who thinks that Sonic hasn't been in a rut the past few years, I'd like for you to explain the travesty called Sonic 2006. I really don't trust their games these days as they're usually rushed and end up with exciting glitches like boosting into your own bullets from the motorcycle or taking damage just by driving a hovercraft, jumping into an enemy only to fall to your death, breakdancing to death whenever you run into a wall during the mach speed section, and numerous stages that can take 15 or more tedious minutes. If you want to see the full game and the pain that it causes, click right here.

SynthesizedStampede
For some reason I find Sonic with a sword in his hand really stupid, but think that a dual-wielding Knuckles is pretty awesome. Yeah, I guess I'm biased somewhere in there *knocks on head*. So judging from that awesome post NeoForte posted updating us on some of the gameplay elements of Black Knight, it'll play like a regular 3D Sonic...except with a sword, no? Hmm...interesting. I still don't think giving a weapon to a hedgehog is a good idea, a lot of people, with this argument, usually refer to the disaster that was Shadow the Hedgehog. *sighs* First the werewolf, now a sword? Why can't Sonic just be...Sonic?
