Can someone tell me what's up with this sword?

I almost feel bad making posts this nerdy anymore, but something continues to compel me. The gunblade is actually one of the more feasible Final Fantasy weapons to bring to the real world. [...Gunblade...] It wouldn't be the most sensible of weapons, but it's totally possible.

I can see how that would work, but I've never seen this artwork, and I'm going off of the ingame explanation of how it works. I don't remember it saying anywhere that it actually fires projectiles; Squall's gunblades at any rate. I am aware that Seifer's gunblades do fire projectiles, however.

edit: actually, now that I think about it, this difference was detailed ingame (I think, it's been a few years since I played it and my discs are screwed up now)

The pretty-boy aesthetic is getting SO tiresome!

It's been there all along; it's only that the hardware is good enough now to show it in all its androgynous glory. (You've seen concept art for early FF games, haven't you? It's freaking hideous.)

Also! In a game that involves witches, magical creatures that let you pretend to be witches, the ability to possess people in the past, giant flightless yellow birds used as beasts of burden, monsters that jump off the moon to invade the planet every so often, and TIME KOMPRESSION (among other things), I find it hilarious that the gunblade thing is such a sticking point.

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but most of that stuff can be explained with LOL MAGIC. The gunblade is supposed to be technological, I thought. I never really played through FF8 again or did any research into the exact mechanics of the gunblade. The game had enough other problems.

There is nothing unrealistic about a gunblade. Gun-swords even existed for a time in history. They were seen as a solution to early guns taking so long to reload, so a sword was built around the gun. Before they invented bayonets, muskets were often spun around and used as clubs when things got close. Early bayonets were simply knives jammed down the muzzle of the gun.

The only thing odd things about the gunblade are the level of refinement of the gun itself (a revolver) and the fact that the gun was used only to supplement the swinging of the sword. But I'm sure we would have developed them if people were durable enough to justify what would normally be overkill.

I always thought it was the FLAMES from the sword that made it hurt more.

Actually, as someone explained earlier, the gunblade has a muzzle which is a bit impractical, but can be used if mastered. You see, if you slash and then in the middle of it fire the gun, it should technically hit the opponent. This is what the gunblade does, or should do at least. I thought it seemed obvious at first, but at the very least it's plausible.

Here a some other examples of real gunblades:

Also, the gunblade is badass. I want one.

No, actually, it explains very clearly in the FFVIII Ultimania that the mechanism is meant to send powerful vibrations through the edge of the sword, increasing it's cutting power.

which doesn't really make sense at all but that's besides the point
