Periphery
I've been obsessed with bands that utilize Meshuggah-like rhythms lately. If you like melody, check out After the Burial and Animals as Leaders especially: After The Burial - Rareform and Berzerker and and Animals As Leaders - CAFO and Tempting Time Thanks for pimpin' our stuff here, Periphery likes OC Remix -Jake
Guy In Rubber Suit
Opeth. They've only been mentioned once. ONCE! But they deserve to be mentioned far more. Maybe two more times and that's it. Bleak The Lotus Eater The Baying of the Hounds I believe that Disillusion has been mentioned once. They're worth checking out, especially the album Back to Times of Splendor. Their sound is reminiscent of Opeth with the mixture of progressive melodic death metal and acoustic/progressive rock. Emperor The Tongue of Fire The Eruption Actually I'd recommend any song off of the album Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise. Their older stuff is great as well but a lot more extreme and not too much on the technicality however it has a ton of atmosphere and some great concepts. Agalloch Falling Snow Sowilo Rune Anything they have done is great. Though I particularly like the White EP which is basically a bunch of acoustic folk songs. The Mantle and Ashes Against the Grain are great atmospheric folk metal albums. Borknagar Vintersorg Dopt i en Jokelsjo
Bleck
Is 'Excellent Metal' a new genre? Is it the kind of metal you hear in British halls while people drink tea?
jabond23
Pagan's Mind is probably my fav "Excellent Metal" band. They're mostly progressive metal, but its still nice and heavy and has a good groove to it. Pagan's Mind - Resurrection (Back In Time) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPw3X0T_lns ) Pagan's Mind - Shine Eternally ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER3rafSFoMk ) 2 of probably the best songs from them. If your a fan of Dream Theater and the like, you'll really like this band. I actually, dare i say it, like them MORE than Dream Theater. Salluz
Is 'Excellent Metal' a new genre? Is it the kind of metal you hear in British halls while people drink tea? It's anything that's good enough to be played in a British hallway full of posh tea drinkers.

Obtuse
I can't believe I didn't see this thread. My list .... Opeth Mastodon Lamb of God Those are my top 3. Crack the Skye was an incredible album by Mastodon. Probably the best of 2009. After seeing them last night, I'll add Metroid Metal to the list. Necrotic
A new 's had some relatively clean live footage recorded. It`s very chill, and very Cynic. Figure a lot of you guys would appreciate it.Thanks for pimpin' our stuff here, Periphery likes OC Remix -Jake Jake Bowen! Cool seeing you around these parts. I'm quite a fan of your band's djenty goodness, as few others can do it like you guys. I hope things are going well with the album and stuff dude. I hope Sumerian works out well for you guys. Mike Keene seems like a cool dude, and I appreciate that his label is bringing some great up and comers off the ground. Also great to hear that you guys are fans of video game music. L.T.W.
I haven't seen "As I Lay Dying" being mentioned yet. They are great band, but might have a bit too much screaming in some songs. Also not mentioned: Avenge Sevenfold Bullet for my Valentine and/or Trivium they are just awesome. Also, as someone mentioned before, All That Remains is great. Try listening to "The Fall of Ideals" and "Overcome" albums. And in the not so much metal but kick ass nonetheless, I recommend "Outworld" and the world famous Joe Satriani, he isn't metal, but he truly knows how to shred the guitar. SLyGeN
Is 'Excellent Metal' a new genre? Is it the kind of metal you hear in British halls while people drink tea? You're more correct than you think. Salluz seems to be taking a liking to happy joy joy metal written by bands that work primarily in the Major key. British metal is, for the most part, just like that. So yes, ITT, Excellent Metal is british. If I didn't hate that shit, I'd have something useful to contribute. But since I do, here's some Black Metal, instead, to caress your ears. <- from Los Angeles! Makes me happy to see something good come out of California.(Also I was half-kidding. Those link to respectable and talented bands.)
The Legendary Zoltan
Oh man!!! Rhapsody of Fire is finally coming back! http://rhapsodyoffire.com/2010/ Check out the two audio samples they have on the site. They're both ridiculously good. It seems to me that there is a cycle that Rhapsody of Fire go through. They release an unbelievable and ground-breaking album, and then they release a album that is quite impressive but not quite as great as the one before it. This will be one of the unbelievable ones yo!

Necrotic
I've discovered a lot of stuff since I last posted here so I figure I'll share it. Exivious - Jazz fusion death metal. They've been around as a band for a while, but just recently released their debut. Featuring two members of Cynic, a member of Textures, and a member from a band I've never heard of called Sengaia. - For you prog fans out there - This is actually the only band on the list that technically isn't new to me, although in one sense they still are as I never checked out all their material until recently. They're the inspiration for the legendary band Agalloch (featured in my signature). Also helped establish the sound of black metal when it was still growing up in Norway. For some reason after their first 3 albums, which were metal albums, they decided to completely change genres into experimental trip-hop.Ihsahn - Well, okay, this artist isn't new to me either, but the album I'm about to mention is. Ihsahn recently released the third album in his trilogy. If you consider yourself a fan of metal and don't at least know who this is you better reconsider your definition of metal fan and educate yourself promptly. Features delicious 8-string guitar, which is something new for Ihsahn. Sumatra - A technical death metal/deathcore band from Russia, featuring two of the most talented technical guitarists I've ever heard. Even haters of deathcore and breakdowns can find an appreciation of this band. Recently broke up, then reunited. Their guitarist Karen Grigoryan has some outstanding solo stuff. Oh, the best part? The band (and Karen) offer ALL their material for FREE. Oh, and Periphery released their debut album. It's pretty good. If you don't dig the clean vox (like me) or hate growls, then there's also an instrumental version of the album you can get in the deluxe edition of the album or on iTunes, because these guys are immensely talented (featuring 3 guitarists, which is pretty unique... one doing Djent rhythms, one doing other rhythms, one doing leads) and shouldn't be missed for a second. I have a crap-ton of stuff that's really brutal and heavy I'd like to share but I know the majority of OCR isn't into that so I'll share if asked. P.S. Because I love you all, here's a little bonus, A recorded version of that Cynic song I posted in the thread earlier.
