BardicKnowledge Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Wasn't there something last year when there were prizes offered in a raffle, when PayPal shut down djp's account? Correct, which is why he said there wouldn't be prizes this year. Also BGC, I hope your eyesight is better soon! (too much time at the computer today?) Quote
djpretzel Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Correct, which is why he said there wouldn't be prizes this year. Also BGC, I hope your eyesight is better soon! (too much time at the computer today?) That was a ridiculous experience, and was singlehandedly responsible for me moving OCR's fundages into an ING account and only keeping the bare minimum in my PayPal account. They shut it down because awarding prizes randomly was a "lottery" in their opinion. That part I could understand, I guess, but buy me a beer some time and I'll tell you the hell of getting our account reactivated. Short version? Due to the limitations of their system and some ridiculous policy regarding "file-sharing services", of which we apparently fall under, I ended up having to take a SCREENSHOT of a notepad document and upload a BMP file into their crappy attachment system. What did it say? It said that we don't allow child porn, and would report offenses to the proper authorities. One of the worst customer service experiences of my life, don't use them for anything super-critical, and don't keep more than $500 in there, is my advice. In other, happier news, thanks for the donations & support thus far, everyone - we're off to a good start! Quote
SoulinEther Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Should we take that to mean that requesting remixes with cash (which is similar to the bounty system for lots of open source software projects, I might add) would not be an option? though I'm still not sure what would bind someone to remixing something..unless some of the donated money goes to them or something. Sounds like a mess and might not be worth it. Quote
Brandon Strader Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Remixes for cash would be more appropriate to pay the actual person making the remixes I've got $7 in my Paypal :z Quote
big giant circles Posted April 8, 2010 Author Posted April 8, 2010 Remixes for cash would be more appropriate to pay the actual person making the remixesI've got $7 in my Paypal :z I think you are totally missing the point of a fundraiser. I could be mistaken, but I believe that the suggestion was to collect a group of remixers who would agree to remix a song requested by a donor. Not OCR getting a donation and saying "ok, we'll see if we can get someone to remix that song". The onus would be on remixers to volunteer their services in exchange for the donation to OCR. Again, I'm not quite certain if PayPal would consider this shady or not, since it would have to technically be considered payment for services, and we'd have to clearly differentiate the difference between people just making simple donations and those who would be "purchasing" the services of a remixer from the site. It's a headache to think about, for sure, thanks to PayPal's fine print. Truthfully I think very little of them after that debacle last year. Quote
Sinewav Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 I don't think it would gambling if we did it PBS-style. For example, anyone with a donation of $50+ get a complimentary remix of their choice. ...and anyone with a donation of $350+ gets a complimentary Time Mage hat. Sorry, old meme is old. I just wanted to use that smiley. Quote

I just wanted to use that smiley. Yeah, this is what I was implying. It's not a "the top five donaters get remixes". It's a "if you donate more than x dollars, one of these remixers will make a remix for you. It might not be an official OCReMix, but it's a custom remix that you'll get as a way of saying thank you from OCR". And yes, the whole point is that the artist is volunteering their services for free as a way of helping OCR. That's the point of it being a "fundraiser" as opposed to a "remixer auction". Quote
linkspast Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 killed fifteen dead presidents in the name of OCR Quote
TheKrow Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 What I don't understand is how PayPal found out OCR was giving away prizes. Is there something I'm missing? Quote

Stevo, do you want to take point and see if you can collect a team of remixers who might volunteer for this? If we can get enough people signed up, we can more officially see about implementing it, I think. Let's just start with remixer willingness for now and go from there What I don't understand is how PayPal found out OCR was giving away prizes. Is there something I'm missing? No telling, but my own personal guess is that someone reported us. DJP asked, but they didn't say. (Though it was a miracle getting ANY sort of sensible or intelligently constructed response/support from them at all, so that was honestly the least of our concerns at the time...) Quote

big giant circles Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 You should be able to donate without being subject to fees. Quote
Global-Trance Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Send it as a gift. It SHOULD go through without the fee. Quote
Bahamut Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 Just donated $25 - it's the best I can do for now. OCR will probably be seeing more at the end of the year . Quote
jmr Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 Hoodie + Shipping + Donation = $50.00 spent in the name of OCR. Quote
Pyrion Posted April 11, 2010 Posted April 11, 2010 Donated $10 again this year. I challenge all the noobs as well as the infrequent posters, (like myself) who enjoy the music here to donate to this site as well. Done. $25 just now. Quote
big giant circles Posted April 11, 2010 Author Posted April 11, 2010 You guys are great! I'll update the list soon. Thanks for your awesome support so far everyone, keep spreading the word! The more money the site gets in donations, the more cool stuff can potentially happen down the road. I'm talking all kinds of possible stuff, like possibly more OCR merch, more physical album releases, more prize giveaways for stuff like competitions etc, improved site features etc etc etc. It's not just about getting by, it's about continuing to help this community thrive and grow You guys rock, keep it up!
