  4. awwww yeeeee Some words: King Knight vs. Ballade Dewey Newt: The orchestral score take is something I could imagine being played by a professional symphony, easily recognizable themes from both sources and nicely directed energy towards the end. Gario: I love the 95(?) bpm rhythm and patterns, also recognize parts of both themes - some of the synths are (kinda) simple but overall enjoyed it. Wandering Travelers vs. Uranus JohnStacy: You have found a better fit for the Uranus theme than I have. I say good job, I like the thickly colored take on both themes (and that sexy piano.) FIESTA! Specter Knight vs. Enker PlanarianHugger: I love the title, you definitely take the trophy for best named track in my book. This one mixed the high energy from both tracks into a pretty high energy arrangement itself. I think some of the transitions from theme to theme were a little sudden or harsh, but the appropriate switch-ups and direction in the rhythm section held it together. Starphoenix: Lots of cool effects and manipulation of both themes into what I believe would've been a coherent arrangement...had they been in the same key Shovel Knight vs. Venus (I feel like shovel knight is an overture of sorts for some other themes I've heard from the game hmm) Jorito: Combines both sources better than any track I've heard so far in this compo. So smooth, although I must admit I found the voice distracting. MegaDrive: I liked the funky take on themes, with some cool color provided by the celestial sounding thing. However, a bit repetitive.

  5. On vacation this week, so I had to get a bonus mix done early. Looking forward to what everyone else comes up with! https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8-q7hg2GtQPZzRReUxFYmktcUU/view?usp=drivesdk

  7. Spiccato means bouncing the bow against the string. Staccato means sharply detached from the other notes. Where did you find a spiccato? I've been looking for an affordable spiccato option. In any case, if you like it, then you like it. I'm not remixing this for you; it's all about the decisions you make in making this. (How do I say this without it sounding passive-aggressive?) The person whose opinion on your mix matters the most is you. All I do is point out possible flaws while you can still change stuff. And I can be wrong. There's still a mechanical rolling sound to the steel drums. Less annoying, but still there. I would recommend varying velocities more, or making the synth/sampler respond more to the different velocities. A trick I used with Logic's built-in sampler was to make low-velocity notes start later in the sample, so only the high-velocity notes got the louder start of the sample. This trick, I think, would help with steel drums in particular, because they're used in those rolls. If the synth or sampler you use allows for it, make it respond more to velocity differences. Or make the velocity differences greater. Or both. You might also want to slightly randomize or shuffle/swing the rhythm of the rolls, for a more human sound. I don't know what would work best, but you can try everything and just keep what you like. If you're looking to invest in a really nice steel drum synth, Pianoteq has an add-on for that. It'd set you back a bit, though, 150€ for the basic Pianoteq and the add-on. I like its sound, both the steel drums and the base piano (and I use the Rhodes add-on on almost everything I do nowadays), but it's way too much for a single remix, so if you're not planning on doing a lot more with steel drums, it's not worth it. I think I've heard enough of you to say you've been improving nicely. Keep at it. You're doing great. And take your mixes off eval when you get your eval.

  8. Alright - I said I would be working on the narrative part of this album in May, so I thought I would give an update on that. I still haven't developed a plan on what this looks like yet, but I have been thinking about the narrative discussion earlier and I'm now building the framework on what that would look like. Here's what I have so far... What I'm thinking is 3 or 4 minute-long narrative scenes and possibly an ending sequence to give listeners a bit of context and help guide the path of the journey, much like the conversations with Pepper and pilot chatter in the games themselves. Each 'scene' would likely be amongst the pilots and a few select guests, depending on the scene. Now, I do not want to go too far with this, as this is a remix/arrangement album and not an audio play; however, I'm totally open to suggestions on how to proceed or anything you think should be mentioned/included in the scene or dialogue. I do not plan to pump the dialogue full of cheese either; I might make a quick joke or two in game context - 'Watch where you're aiming, Fox!' - but I plan to keep as close to what I think the game would say. Here are some examples of where I would see these scenes in the album: Opening <-----> Title Theme (Introduction?) Boss A/Attack Carrier <----> Meteo ('All ships check in') Fortuna <----> Sauria (Approach to Sauria/Meeting Krystal?) Boss B <----> end of disc 1 (Leaving Sauria/Falling into the Black Hole?) Space Armada <-----> Star Wolf (Introduction to Star Wolf) Boss C <-----> Venom Orbital/Base (Approach to Venom?) Andross <----> Ending (Job Well Done?) NOTE: The above are suggestions - MAXIMUM 4 narratives, period. I do not want a dialogue with Pepper at the beginning because we have Pepper's monologue in SCRAMBLE and I'm also not going to build any dialogue around conversations between Fox and Andross because of the Andross monologue I'm planning to build for the Andross remix (whatever form that takes). So - please let me know what you think of the concept and/or if you are interested in possibly voicing any of the characters - and let me know which character you're interested in, if you have a particular character in mind (Yes, @TheChargingRhino, I know you're interested invoicing Krystal and @Cole Train has already given an offer to be Fox, since he's rapping as Fox on the Sauria remix anyway). Keep in mind that I'm not in a position to actually cast anyone yet - I don't even have a script - but if I know you're interested now then I'll contact you later when I'm in a position to start looking at recording. I have no set timeline for this - I'm STILL trying to find time to piece together the SCRAMBLE update and my own WIP - but I can commit to at least having the first script in place by the next deadline, wherever we decide that to be. Speaking of deadlines, six weeks to go!

  9. It's not just about bass drum hits. X's are hits on the bass or snare drums that must be there. At the x's you can choose whether to hit the bass, snare, hi-hat, or none of them. For instance, if you choose a X-xX-x pattern, a single bar of 6/8 (high bpm) might look like hi hat O--O--- bass drum O-O--- snare ---O-O (O=hit, -=rest) Now loop that, but occasionally drop the second O on the bass drum and/or snare.
