  2. Really solid stuff from Nabeel here, who's really come into his own with a diverse amount of material, especially in the various comps going on. I loved both themes on the Impulse soundtrack, and Nabeel really amped up the energy while still keeping a spacey/interstellar feel, which was awesome. I can easily see how this fits into Impulse itself as part of the game's soundtrack. Nice work, man.
  3. OC ReMix Publishes Free Impulse OST by Meteo Xavier! October 18, 2012 Contact: press@ocremix.org FAIRFAX, VA-Impulse, a spaceshooter/puzzle title developed by Deck16 for Windows, was released earlier this year for free download. Today, OverClocked ReMix has released the contributions of Meteo Xavier to the game's soundtrack for free. Are you a machine? Yes. I'm an OC ReMixer! But I didn't send Larry my WAVs to upgrade the bitrate of my music. Can I still send what I have? Yes! Your WAVs have to be the exact same version of the song as what's on OC ReMix, there cannot be any changes. The new torrents include everything from mix #1 to mix #2500. As of today (October 18th, 2012), we have posted OC ReMix #2511, so there are 11 mixes (the most recent ones) not included in the torrents. Anything after mix #2500, you would need to download yourself from the actual ReMix pages. Are all the albums included? No, the album torrents are separate. (Download them from http://ocremix.org/torrents/.) These new torrents are just for the ReMixes that go through the individual submissions process. I already have a lot of the ReMixes. Which ones should I replace? You should replace everything. This new set of torrents updates the ReMixes to have the most accurate information and makes them fully compatible and sortable in your smartphone or portable music player! When I read the Comments section of a ReMix in iTunes, the text cuts off. Is the file messed up? No. The full comments are intact, and that's a character limit viewing limitation of iTunes. If you use a program like WinAmp to view the tags, you can see the full comments. I've already rated the mixes in iTunes to help me sort them. Do I have to re-rate them? Yes. Comparing the new set to your old set in the same iTunes window and matching up the ratings again is your best bet. I don't want to lose the Play Count statistics I have in iTunes. What can I do? You have to mess with some code, but it's possible to manually change your Play Count numbers. Google some resources. Larry recommends http://joe.siegler.net/2010/11/how-to-change-the-play-count-number-in-itunes/ as a resource. I change the tags to display things the way I want for my personal collection. How can I do that with the new set of ReMixes? Mp3tag is by far the best MP3 tag editing program out there, and was the program used for this project. (Download it and please donate to Mp3tag, it's well worth it.) If you explore Mp3tag's scripting options (Actions), there are ways to batch edit the files so that, for example: you can embed different album artwork you can copy the composer names, company names, or game titles to the Artist field you can copy the game titles to the Album field you can remove the game name and "OC ReMix" from the song title and replace it with just the name of the ReMix (by replacing the Title tag with the data from the Subtitle tag) Whatever you want to do, Mp3tag presents you a lot of options and is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by OC ReMix.

This is a game based on the old-school premise of computer gaming -- basic design with very flexible results. The goal remains the same, but the levels are incredibly different with various degrees of gravity and either limited or limitless fuel adding to the conflict -- nothing is quite the same from level to level and there are many of them to push through. You might be trying to navigating anything from a tunnel to a giant vector maze, or an optical illusion to the labyrinth from Pac-Man, or even a battleship to the game title itself. A simple premise with extreme variety is the name of the game with Impulse and it's free to play with a level editor to make your own. The game itself was a free-range development deal where composers could contribute tracks as they wanted and I volunteered to contribute 9 tracks. I haven't gotten to work on a spacey-puzzle game like this before and I'm still extremely excited I got to. This meant I could experiment with very different textures, structures, and all kinds of fun stuff I could practice where I couldn't before. This is the first production I've ever done where I had full artistic freedom, could use all my highest-quality sets, and make no compromises for sound quality. No excuses this time around, it was time to really step up to the plate and show what I could do. 1. "President Obama Is a Juggalo" I've wanted to do a choir/filter intro for a track for some time and I got a good use out of for this track. This song was quite difficult and took me a week to arrange and set up properly - that weird z3ta+ lead took 3 DAYS to look for before I settled on it for a lead. There were issues here with volume and other automation being difficult, but I was not content to let it be this time. VERY difficult track, but worth it in my opinion. 2. "Zin Kibaru's Guitar" At least 1/3 of this production was inspired by Silent Hill's trip hop styles and I wanted it represented here. That guitar thing is an Absynth preset and I found it wouldn't really change chords, so I had to get creative. I wanted to use a violin for the lead against the dirty instrumentation and Kompakt's electric piano for the chords. The fade out to a more Chrono Cross sounding ethereal vibe was not intentional, but that's where it went and I'm glad I got to use the strings to add some emotional depth there. This track also took a week to do. 3. "Elemental Fog" A complete surprise, I wanted at least one track that sounded like something from Silent Hill 3, but that track wasn't working out. Then I found myself experimenting more with an open-hi-hat trick from one of zircon's videos, then 5 hours later I had this track. I think it worked out much better for what I was trying to do with it. My only regret here is I wasn't able to variate the beat, because by the time I was working on this one, I was running out of time to complete and as repetitive as it is, it also worked OK. 4. "Impulse Prime... Ribs" This was the first track I started and was heavily and deliberately inspired by zircon's early work (the title gives it away). This was one of those rare tracks that I was able to complete in an afternoon. This is also the first track I wanted to experiment with FL Studio's Love Philter and some automation I hadn't tried before. This is one of my favorite tracks on the OST. 5. "Sandsea Sanskrit" I started this track right after " Impulse Prime... Ribs" and it started out when I tried experimenting with an Absynth 5 preset I found with a Kontakt 4 drumloop. Then I added Stormdrum 2 and as many weird effects and finally a sitar from Ra. This is the most experimental track I've ever done and fulfills my dream of doing a psychedelic desert-sounding track. Also only took an afternoon to do. 6. "d('-')m('-')m^('-')^w('-')w('-')P" Full disclosure - this track started out as a remix for the SD3 project, but I wasn't able to get it off the ground. Then I needed one more interesting track for this OST when I was about out of time and this is what I had left. I had trouble modifying the lead French Horn melody to be different than the games' melody because nothing else seemed to fit it, but eventually I was able to get it differentiated. The African rhythms are not loops and for that I am proud, but I wish I had more time to work on this track. Oh well, it's still not bad for what it is. 7. "When You Find a Stranger in the Alps" This is my favorite track and starts the last 1/3 of the OST into retro-sounding, melodic and energetic tracks. I've been wanting to combine older drum machine samples with a Fairlight Voice for some time and I finally got to do the synth work I always wanted on here. I also wanted to get my brother, Jackson, to play his guitar on this track and get his first game credit - unfortunately, we were not able to record his guitar tone straight up for some frustrating reason and, through both of our efforts, we were able to get him represented as a lead pan flute (M1, straight outta Cusco) and a bent saw lead. The nearly 40 second solo piece before the breakdown is all Jackson. 8. "A Shrine for My Mind" This was the hardest track and took 2 weeks to do. I had no idea what I was doing here and the single loop version alone was already almost 4 minutes. This track was going nowhere until I added the Speak & Spell samples, then all of a sudden it got me jazzed up on it and I was able to finish it within a couple days after that. I have no shame that I used basic FL Studio drum samples here. This is the only song that does not loop because an 8:30 minute song with only 4 minutes of content is just asinine. 9. "Combustion (Project A-ok)" The last track for the album and was obviously inspired by Project A-ko's "Explosion" track. I wasn't sure what would fit as an unofficial ending theme until I decided to give it a go with something like "Explosion." I FINALLY kinda learned how to do portamento slides here, so I used them very liberally. Took me about 4 days to do this track, which was a nice change of pace of progress either moving slowly or very fast.   13. The guitar timing just sounded like it was supposed to emulate the style of faux-guitar Rare's GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark soundtracks, so I don't fault Jason for that choice. Nothing earth-shattering here, but it's a solid old mix. The robot clip makes it.

  15. Yeah, the piano leaves a ton to be desired right off the bat. starla's vocals are decent for back in the day, with some flat notes tucked in there. Kind of like djp's early vocal stuff where things don't really hold up today, it just shows you the potential for growth down the line. A couple more takes, some subtler auto-tune and killer production would bring out the best in her great singing voice, as her (amazing) collabs with Nicole Adams have shown. With this mix, it would have been nice for there to have some more room ambiance, but I guess that would have created more of a quality disparity with the mega-fakey piano. It's too bad most mixers don't do re-dos, because I'd love to here an updated versions with higher-quality samples, and some better balance between the vocals and instruments. Interesting concept mix, even if the execution's dated.

  18. Well, it's from 2002, so sometimes THAT'S ALL YOU NEED. I definitely enjoyed this one back in the day, with some clear source tune fan-bias. It's definitely a VERY straightforward arrangement, but it's pleasant. More repetitive than I remembered, and underdeveloped by today's standards, but it got the job done a decade back.
  19. I remember well when this was THE FF5 mix of OCR, i.e. the only one. Classic stuff from Ari, and one of those strong mixes back in the early years that ensured I would never skip OC ReMixes even if I wasn't familiar with the original game. Nothing but a solid, stylish combination of the two themes, with sound quality that holds up pretty well today.
  20. We'll be picking it up now that we're about to wrap up a particularly lengthy internal project. The wait remains too long to post things, absolutely, but hold tight.
  21. The opening synths were very vanilla, but we'll see where this goes. Better stuff at :40 with the switch to rock, featuring combinations of Sakura's and Fei Long's themes though it wasn't really the smoothest flow in terms of combining these themes. The soundscape was pretty cluttered by the guitars from :54-1:08. I felt the guitar playing was a littled stilted in places, but OA didn't agree for your Shinobi 3 mix, so it may only be my opinion again. It's not horrible, but I'm not saying Sixto is the standard, but there's more of natural flow to his guitar performance, as an example. The tone of the electrosynths for the Sakura verses was shrill and not a good lead choice, IMO (e.g. 1:21-1:36, 1:50-2:05). Small thing, but why bother having such flimsy exposed claps in the picture for a few seconds (2:18-2:25)? 2:39 strongly finished off the final minute and felt like the most cohesive section as far as the mixing and instrument textures. Things clicked much better, and even the synth lead was more understated and less glaring as far as its default-y nature. I like the concept and where this is going so far, Dustin, and it gets more right than it does wrong. That said, the so-called seesaw has to be weighted a bit more toward what works vs. what doesn't for me to pass it. It's clearly headed in the right direction, but could use some further polishing so that everything's clicking. Good luck with the rest of the vote! NO (resubmit)
  22. As soon as that piano came in, I thought this was an interesting approach. That said, this mixing sounds... not so good once more stuff faded in at :06. Cluttered garbage from :12-:38, if I may say so. Not sure how the everything got mixed in such a messy way, with a lot of shrill synths and just a very lossy sound. I'd LOVE for someone to explain in too much detail how exactly this is messed up and how to approach fixing it. As is, this is jacked. Not sure about the Beatles sampling. It's not a completely horrible addition, though I personally felt it was lame except for the 1:36 usage (that was cool). We also don't want to be sued by the various estates of the Beatles. Too bad, the arrangement is definitely strong, but the production is equally weak in the opposite direction. Take another pass at the balance and EQ and send it on back, Brandon; this is strong otherwise! NO (refine/resubmit)
  23. The mixing was cluttered in that the voices kind of mushed together, which undercut the lyrics. Otherwise, I love it. OA's spot-on about how more structural variation would have been good, but what's here is certainly substantive enough interpretation. Awesome goofy approach that had me laughing and smiling at sheer silliness. \m/egarocking, there's just no need to say anything else other than KEEP 'EM COMING! YES
