OCR01032 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3 "Bottled Metro"
Bummer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Well, where to begin. Hydrocity and Metropolis Zone both has great themes, the beginning had me going for a while when I recognized what songs being played. But I'm not sure if I like the arrangement with a 100%. The thing that sounds odd is the drums, they are simply too loud. Not that they shouldn't be, but the flutes and the rest of the samples are getting in the background and cannot be heard as good as they should be. At many moments in the remix, all you can hear is the drums playing while you hardly can hear the rest of the instruments since they are playing too low. But this doesn't occur everywhere, there are many places in this remix where the balance is alright. But if you have the opportunity to make a remake of it, then I would be gald to listen to it. -
OCR00337 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "Bluest Sky"
Bummer replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Although this is a slow and mellow remix, it still has enough speed so that you at least can bob your head along the rhytm. Three great instruments are in this piece, a saxophone, a piano, and an electric guitar. The rest of the musical void is being filled out with strings, drums and other necessary components so that there aren't any gaps anywhere. The guitar sounds a little strange though, since it sounds like they've being played 500 metres away and is now only echoing. Almost the same thing can be said about the piano too, it feels like they were put at a long distance so that they wouldn't be able to ruin the calm feel this remix has. Still, this arrangement really do soothe your nerves when you're listening to it. Nice work, Kaijin. -
Considering how the original sounded, this track has gone through some major changes. Heavy metal hasn't really been a favorite musicstyle of mine, but since it's an OC Remix, I'll may give it a listen. It WAS heavy. The beginning was petty easy on us, since it was mostly a slow electric guitar along with lyrics. At 1:25, however, was when the seriousness ( or maybe also the madness) began, when the guitars started to pump out music for full. Another good thing with this is the time, 6 minutes gives alot of space for both lyrics and some awesome solos. The part that followed after the lyrics was my favorite, since then I could focus on listening to the song you've "remixed", along with a very interesting take on the dungeon theme arranged with some piano as well. To sum it up, it was a very solid and kickass arrangement. It has lyrics, standard heavy metal instruments but also some other material, and, of course, competent people to perform it. Sweden really do rocks.

OCR01006 - Sonic the Hedgehog "sonik special"
Bummer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
How many funky Sonic remixes are we going to have exactly? This is like the 8th time I'm once again forced to use the words groovy, funky and swell, since there are no other words to describe it. To transform the original track into this funky arrangement sure was a tough challenge, but from what I can remember, the Special Zone didn't really have a super-happy melody to begin with, at least compared with other games. But as djpretzel said about every instrument being special, I think his right about that point. Although you used a gigantic arsenal of different samples and thingamajings, all of them shines on their own in their way and gives this remix some extra credit. It's like a cardhouse, if you remove one the house will most probably end up in a pile. Funky, groovy and swell stuff, that's all I can say. Good stuff. -
OCR00305 - Sonic the Hedgehog "Particle Brain"
Bummer replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This guy may have a point. When djpretzel started to talk about this great intro, I thought it was going to be some sort of incredible launch of many different synths and cool beats. But instead, it was rough and loud beats that kind of scratched me in my ears and beyond. Everything happened too sudden, the melody started to play alone without even have some sort of soft synth before nor with it, and then stopped just as sudden. Chaotic may be one way to describe it, but I've heard better than this. Edit: HEY, page 2! -
OCR01365 - Sonic the Hedgehog "Marble Dash"
Bummer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Heh, this remix got the groove, I'll give you that. Bass synths along with some classic beats makes a good concept, and it seems like J Morse tried many different combinations with his sample equipment to get some variation in this arrangement. I guess I can't complain about this remix being too short, after like 2 minutes I checked how long this mix was, and when I saw that it had whopping 6 minutes and 20 seconds on its track, well.......holy crap. The piano sample might be my favorite thing about this one, it handled the melody well and gave this remix a happy go lucky feel that hits the spot about right. To sum it up in one word: Nice. -
OCR00691 - Sonic the Hedgehog "Love Hurts"
Bummer replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I like it when DJP gets all full of inspiration and then decides to try things out, this piece reminds me much of his other work dubnofantasyaloneman, that one and this are both very funky and hipp remixes. But what's special with this one is that it's alot more groovy, cool basses and electric organs wah'd to the max, and some funky solos where the melody is being experimented with. This piece emitts so much creativity that it's almost toxic, and to think that it began with a beer ad adds some more humor to it. What more is there to say, it would be nearly impossible to comment on every thing that this arrangement contains, so I'll just say that this is funky monkey stuff, download it now or regret it later. We have a philosophy forum for this y'know, and there are none who expects to you set a grade on this piece. If you think it was very good, just say it, since many in this thread most likely shares your opinion. -
OCR01346 - Sonic the Hedgehog "Live at the Springyard"
Bummer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Well isn't this nice, it's good to eventually see some 100% homemade remixes around here, and in this case, also performed live. f I think about it now, turning the Spring Yard Zone Theme into mellow and smooth blues/jazz was a good idea, since the end result worked real nice. Instruments like paino, keyboards and drums are well appreciatd, but I can't really hear much of the acoustic guitar, except for the moment at 1:47. The voices sounds very cheezy, and they didn't necessarily need to sing so often as in this song since you don't hear the music in the background as good. However, when it comes to mellow live performances such as this one, you really do need a choir to add some reality to it. And the opening with SEEEEEEGAAAAAA was pretty humorous. I think you've missed the main idea with this site. It's about re-arranging videogame music into any type of music style, not just techno. -
OCR00459 - Sonic the Hedgehog "Lightning Star"
Bummer replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This remix makes me smile, how this arrangement goes from agressive and fast punk rock into a calm and jamming country session is beyond my mind. Then I guess I too need to decide which part I like most. The first part was definitly kicking ass and exciting, but it sounded almost too chaotic for me. Too much action. I found the other half more relaxing and enjoyable, since I'm bit of a fan of acoustic guitar. This remix is like a battery, two different ways to use a guitar in each end, but when you sum it up it becomes even. There's a big chans that at least one side will interest someone, so everyone who haven't listened to this yet really should. Another smash hit from J, A, double-X. Tune in. -
I was thinking more along the lines of clubmix than eurodance when I title and later on heard this remix. Although I live in Europe, I certainly don't know about this. What I do know is that this is good trance. It has speed, good selection of beats and samples, and as DJP mentioned, variation through the whole arrangement so that it doesn't get too boring. I liked it when everything calmed down and the started over again at 1:24, and since most of the synths I hear can be tracked to some good trance hits I know about, then this is a fine example of what the 90's brought forth in its melodic inspiration. But to sum it up, I think I'll just quote this guy: It's true y'know.
-
Never heard of Sonic Crackers, but I don't necessarily have to. This is a pretty decent remix, happy beats and synths that dominates the arrangement in the first half of it, but as some already have pointed out, the walkover at 2:22 catches you interest. From playful techno into jamming jazz techno was a little odd, especially since there is quite a gap in styles. But since the other half was enjoyable too, then this remix wasn't so bad. Nice work, Malcos.

OCR01416 - Sonic the Hedgehog "Cryptic Marble"
Bummer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
DistantJ did a marvelous job here, I mean DANG, this is awesome! I got interested at first by the samples used in the beginning, like the drums and beats and such, and the fact that you used such instruments like orientic flutes and sitars impressed me. Reminded me much of a nature show I used to watch. But it was first at 1:46 that it got me, the synth that began at that moment grabbed me and shook me, I love the sound it has but especially its fast tempo and rhytm. With the flutes in the back, it became one great arrangement, mixed with new elements from both the past and today. Oh yes, i'm taking this. Great stuff. -
OCR01169 - Sonic the Hedgehog "Collision"
Bummer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yes, I've found those type of songs interesting as well. As the rest, I like this remix as well. The strong and heavy beats together with the strings makes a good team, and reflects that seriousness when you're on the last stage, or at least when you're absolutely sure when you are on it. Other than that, I don't know what else to say. For me, there aren't any need of changes in this arrangement, since both the beats and the strings cannot stand alone. Being repetive, I might give that a yes, but this rhytm can go on forever if I could decide. Sitting at the computer, your head is bopping while you're listening to this, even if it would repeat itself all the time, you don't really notice. Awesome remix, I think I'm gonna have this on repeat for a while. -
OCR00851 - Sonic CD (JP) "Stardust Beat"
Bummer replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
You can mildly say that this remix caught my attention in the beginning, I thought at first that this was going to become some sort of weird karaoke session, but luckily that wasn't the case. The samples are different this time, that saxophone isn't exactly high quality and the piano that jams from time to time sounds a little rough. However, although that thought pops up into my mind, it really doesn't bother me that much. If one sample sounds bad but the rest sounds good, then it bothers me. But in this case, almost every sample was happy, trippy and rough so that it created an overall theme to this remix, if there would be a real saxophone playing there it would only ruin it. After listening to this for a couple of times, I can understand why AD was dancing in the shower, this really is fun stuff. Well recommended. -
OCR00944 - Sonic CD (JP) "Saturday Night Speedway"
Bummer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is swelltastic. It took its time to get itself going with that chiming synth, so I got glad when a trippy piano suddenly started to spread its magic. And the sax, it sounds strangely for real, and the bass that later comes into the picture really adds some more funky style to this arrangement. I really liked this remix, it had a wide selection of samples and instruments, and everything ran smoothly. No complaints, at all. I give this one two thumbs and two toes up, everyone should give this a listen. Edit: Oh, and Sweden rocks. -
OCR00263 - Sonic CD (JP) "Palmtree Panic"
Bummer replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Well isn't this a lovely jam session, the piano playing fast and bright, some fast paced drums, waves crashing on top of the beach.......or are those cheers? Doesn't really matter, the point is that this is an instrumental wonderpiece, delivered within 3 minutes and 47 seconds and just be enjoyed. The only bad point might be how bad the cheering sounds, but also how repetive it sounds, since there aren't any big varieties among the instruments used. -
OCR00606 - Sonic CD (JP) "Li'l Blue Bastard"
Bummer replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I liked this one. Short on time, yes, but it compensates it with some bells and a very catchy electric guitar. Or is a bass guitar? I've never been able to tell them apart that much. I'm taking this bastard to where it belongs, in my music folder. I think you clicked on the wrong emoticon. -
OCR00702 - Sonic CD (JP) "Collision Chaos Old School"
Bummer replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oldschool electronica, I didn't even know that there was a name for that. Electronica has never been one of those music styles that has gotten me in a positive way, mostly because of the reason that the synths stands out way too much. Like at 1:17, it feels like someone is standing in front of me with a horn, it's just annoying. It gets better at 2:04, cause then there's more samples that makes it less annoying and instead quite catchy since it doesn't stand out as much. The good points however, were two things. First of all, the piano, I may be a fan of that particuliar instrument so that may affect my opinion a little, but the sample you used had a certain echo to it, made me feel good in a positive and appropriate way. Second good thing was the man shouting Pump Up The Volume. Yes, you heard me. Although he only appeared for a brief moment, he suited the situation pretty nice. It was a smooth and oldschool remix with nice technobeat, but with synths playing a tad too loud for my taste. Overall, very solid work, so this deserves a strong nice work. Well done. -
OCR00742 - Sonic CD (JP) "ColKaos Stoned Future"
Bummer replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I got some mixed feeling about this remix, but i think Abadoss summarized my thoughts well. It's cool that you decided to give it a try to the least, it's a very smooth and at some points jazzy, but since most of the samples have been grinded into a homogen soup, there aren't any elements that stands out and gets this thing going. But not bad, not bad at all, especially since you just wanted to try it out for the first time. If you focus some more on your work, stuff like this can become awesome, but as I and Abadoss said, this is excellent music to have in the background while working or just 'chillin', whatever word that makes more sense. Nice and groovy stuff, well done. -
OCR01134 - Sonic Adventure 2 "Knuckles' Unknown from M.C."
Bummer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Holy deep gutwrenching barbequechicken woofer sandwich, THIS IS SUPERB. Rap and Hiphop isn't something that I like to listen to, due to the content in the lyrics mostly I guess. However, this may be rap but this ain't the same kind of rap I'm familiar of. This is a specialized, improviced, solid, funky, spunky, agressive, depressive, cheerful and rapping masterpiece customized for the sole purpose to give knuckles a kickass theme. The overall content in the lyrics was both witty but mostly very skillfully written. This might bethe only time that i don't really bother much about the music, the human voice is the star instrument in this creation, and it's so awesome i'm gunna git this right now. This is gold. With emeralds embraced in it. -
OCR00709 - Sonic Adventure 2 "Chao Marathon"
Bummer replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I'm not disturbed by the melody change, but that's probably because i've never heard it. :P Ok, let's get down to busincess. It seems like Leebro here has some sort of close connection to Chaos (plural of Chao), since this is his second remix of those small and cuddly creatures. I can't really say that I'm a big fan of this remix, although that LeeBro so far has amazed me with his other contributions. But for this one, there wasn't anthing that caught my attention or interest, it was a soft and mellow christmas like arrangement, but it sounded like it just kept going with the same style through the whole thing. The problem in question is not because I don't like calm remixes, I have plenty of those, and it cannot be the synth either since I bells. It sounded somewhat boring when every sample was playing on the same volume level, nothig stood out in the front and showed what it got. -
OCR00982 - Sonic Adventure "The Twinkle Park Classic"
Bummer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Since DarkeSwrord has managed to produce many nice remixes over time, I thought it would be interesting to listen to this one as well. Bubble-gum trance would be a fitting name for this, this isn't something that you would get serious too on the dance floor, but it's quite enjoyful to listen to. However, it was at 1:57 that my opinion changed in a very drastic manner. When that melody started......I just became .......engulfed if I might say in that cute and cuddly bell synth that played one of the most hypnotizing melodies I've heard in a while. Sadly, that moment was over quickly and the remix continued with its previous concept, but the melody appeared for a short while in the end too. But to sum it all up, this remix really really good. The trance layout isn't bad, everything works smoothly, so I'm content. Nice job. -
OCR00389 - Sonic Adventure "Theme of Chao (Party Started)"
Bummer replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
PUT YOU HANDS UP! IT'S PARTY TIME! That or something like it was my first reaction when i heard this, and now that I have had it on repeat this entire morning, I think I'm ready to review it. It's a party mix, so far I got everything clear. Lee has chosen fine samples to make this possible, no depressing and boring stuff and instead some happy and energic synths and beats. You have some variety to it, I like the switch that occurs around 1:31, and then some trumpet samples appears both before and after it. However, after that happening, it seems like the whole thing clicks on the reset button and starts over again, with some more energy but with pretty much same feel and setup, although some new extra materials have been added. As I said, a happy and joyful remix, and apparently it works to have it playing while you're doing some computerwork. It's good to hear a remix that at least has plenty of time to show its stuff onto, 4 minutes and 20 seconds to be precise. To keep the attention, I guess it would have been good to throw in a new sample to make a big difference, but I'm satisfied with the setup and speed its going with. Actually more than just satisfied, this remix is great.
