  1. Sick album! I'm only a few songs in but its definitely a step up from some of the earlier stuff I heard you did (which is impressive considering how mental Top Secret was). I'd buy this, hell I'm hitting up all of my friends into rap and telling them to check this album out and not just because of some kind of OCR camaraderie but rather because I'm digging whats going on. Good to know you're still doing stuff, best of luck.
  2. There are a lot of these. Some of my favorites: Queen - Under Pressure (covered by the Blood Brothers): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAubMoy2MNU Probably my favorite from a pure listenability standpoint. The move to 3/4 is incredibly impressive and the song works way more than it probably should (Then again I'm heavily biased towards the Blood Brothers). The Knacks - My Sharona (covered by The Number Twelve Looks Like You) Kinda boring after a little while but the solo kicks ass so there's that. Kelly Clarkson - Since You've Been Gone (covered by Bomb the Music Industry!) A pretty straight cover but the fact that it gets some punk love is worth mentioning. Radiohead - A bunch of songs (covered by Arrogant Sons of Bitches) http://www.quoteunquoterecords.com/qur008.htm I kind of love this album for the fact that Radiohead's music doesn't sound that out of place in ska format and a couple of songs work a little better imo. New Order - Blue Monday (covered by M.I.A.?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iG4b9GKX9Q Not really a cover, but the melody is jacked directly from New Order and is kinda weird in that sense.
  3. Dibs on being on the FFX soundtrack project Easily my favorite FF game.
  4. Didn't feel like making a new topic but I made another one: http://soundcloud.com/fli/i-need-to-sleep-more-often
  5. Thank FSM that there are no Piano sounds, I have so friggin many pianos sounds.
  6. SPOILERS? (Not really, at least not any major ones anyway) I think the idea is that there were other scientists during this whole deal and it wasn't just the main 3 characters. Problem is though at 2 hours and 40 minutes a lot probably had to be cut, such as going more in depth about it. Supposedly there was a lot more to the script in earlier drafts but it eventually got whittled down and certain characters ether got cut altogether or combined into others. The avatar at the end does look a lot like the other scientists' whose name I forget, but I kinda of assumed it was just another scientists' avatar instead. It may be that only the scientists stayed behind or something, but really I don't know.
  7. I've seen this movie 3 times and I still want to see it again. My love for this movie is very similar to the love I have for the Avatar TV series (the airbending one), which is while the story is somewhat predictable, the characters are given strong enough personalities (Neytiri is one of the most intriguing characters I've seen on film in a long time, which is incredibly impressive for someone computer generating) and the world that is created feels so real that it makes the impact of the epic storyline that much greater. Also supposedly its supposed to be a trilogy, which I both hope and slightly fear.
  8. Totally worth bumping this thread considering its out now. I saw it today and was blown away, and that was only in 2D. Hopefully I'll be able to see it in 3D soon.
  9. Holy crap, the video itself is impressive but it really shows how damn good Howlett was at sampling in his prime, the fact that "Bulls on Parade" was sampled kinda blows my mind.
  10. Bought a few more records this weekend, as well as having access to my dad's record collection. So far I've already discovered the sample used in Lupe Fiasco - Pressure which was pretty cool because it was on a really obscure album. I'm thinking about making a little sample pack for OCR though with some cool stuff I've found that I may not have a use for (as well as whatever breaks I've found), would anyone be interested? Is anyone else up for doing the same?
  11. There is no real place to start, and also to some piracy is a totally legit way of getting audio-related gear if you're still a little unsure about it as a hobby (I own all of my software fyi). That said, it will be tempting to download too much all at once. If you're not quite sure about it as a hobby, then download some demos and do a little research on the internet and find some resources or something technical sounding. Also, in terms of a professional context I've NEVER heard of Logic and Reason being the standard in a "professional" studio. Every studio I've visited or recorded in has used Pro Tools, its pretty much regarded as the industry standard still. I'm not saying that Logic or Reason aren't professional, because they are, as are every other DAW listed. In the end you're focusing too much on the tool because honestly given any DAW and enough time, you can make stuff at a "professional" level.
  12. Both of these are based of off samples I've found, with a fair amount of work done to it on top. Also, if you're from a project on which I have yet to post a WIP, ignore this . http://soundcloud.com/fli/random-beat http://soundcloud.com/fli/gnarly
  13. The important thing though is that a squashed sound isn't necessarily a bad one, its all about the end goal. All dynamic ranges are artistic choices, and though the trend towards all releases approaching a "wall-of-sound" is a harmful one, it shouldn't immediately discourage one from making a loud mix. All that matters is the end result: If it sounds good and expresses the artistic intentions through the mix, then nothing else matters.
  14. 1. Make music 2. Don't not make music
  15. I didn't really mind the voice change at all and it reminded me that the man reason why I care about the reviews is the writing + animation anyway. That said if he's doing this old school style again I wish legal wasn't being so anal and he could use a different, thematic intro/outro music like he used to.
  16. Uh, that wasn't me rapping, I just made the beat. The rap was done by MURS and it was just an acapella I had of his. If I could rap half as well as him I'd be rapping all over my own tracks.
  17. Can't say I have :/ I'm really starting to love Ableton's sampler the more and more I'm using it, and really I've gained a supreme respect for samplers in general, especially once you get it to loop in a really weird place and you get some crazy modulation on it, then sampling that sample. Good stuff.
  18. You're thinking way too much about this, just go back to making whatever you normally make but start listening to rap music, you can't nail the vibe unless its authentic. Just because a song has guitars in it doesn't mean its a rock song; you can't define music by "triplet rhythms, heavy use of sampling, etc." (try as Pandora might), you have to get the feel down. I also recommend watching the documentaries Scratch, Freestyle, and The Freshest Kids if you want a quick primer on the hip-hop music culture. Its not an end-all but it should give you a feel for hip-hop culture which is ideally what you'll want to give voice to in your tracks, or at least make a commercially friendly shiny product that gives the impression of it.
  19. Definitely, and if you like that then Dr. Octagon is worth a gander as well, its at least equal to Deltron 3030.
  20. Lol, not at all, I only felt it was worth mentioning that a lot of what I talked about doesn't matter when showing someone who isn't into the scene. As for the second clip, not bad at all, and closer than the first one (though I haven't listened to the updated version). You may want to give a bit more love to the kick and subs (you might be - I don't have a sub atm) and possibly even slowing it down a little bit might give it a bit more swagger. For some reason the drums just sound off to me, not-so-much from a technical standpoint but rather a stylistic one but it could just be me.
