Ok so I guess plagarism is cool now guys
The Vagrance replied to Benjamin Briggs's topic in General Discussion
Really what seperates good sampling from bad though? For example, I thought Kanye West's sample of Daft Punk, as annoying as it was, was at the very least well done considering there was a lot more to it then the Daft Punk sample. Plus, Daft Punk didn't seem to mind at all, probably considering how much sampling they do themselves. I mean, if the criteria is essentially rapping over the sample plus some extra drums then songs are . The main difference seemingly being that the sample is considerably more recognizable now than the original (except for possibly the ATCQ one). Also, really? A song from 1997? If you want to rag on lazy sampling of '80s tunes you could go with at least .As for good sampling, DJ Shadow's Endtroducing is still a landmark, but my personal favorite usage of a sample just for its "Holy shit I never would've guessed" factor is the sample Dom & Roland used from Let's Dance by David Bowie EDIT: According to wikipedia "Puff Daddy" didn't even write the song, and not in a "of course he didn't, he sampled it" sort of way but in a "someone else actually wrote the damn sampled song" sort of way. -

Your Choice of DAW?
The Vagrance replied to Legion Kreinak's topic in Music Composition & Production
Ableton Live. I like it because it has the look and layout of a normal DAW (Cubase/Logic) but with some tweaks to make everything more streamlined and approachable. Not to mention session view and how easy it is to make mixes in it. -
No reason for vocaloid to not be used at all, but I'm sure that like chiptunes, vocaloid-only mixes wouldn't be accepted. I'm pretty positive that the girl vocals in this track are either vocaloid or some other singing program:

Top gear using metal gear solid music?
The Vagrance replied to Anti-Syne's topic in General Discussion
Its entirely possible, especially considering I'm pretty sure they used a Halo track in one of their earlier episodes EDIT: Yep, they used "Peril" at (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZFvVzjclGk#t=3m16s) -
Survey on Net Neutrality - help w/my research paper
The Vagrance replied to Moguta's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I seriously hope this is for like a Freshman English class or something, but even then the questions either have a fairly strong bias to them or are poorly worded from 7 to 10. -
Donkey Kong Country 3: Double the Trouble! - History
The Vagrance replied to Emunator's topic in Projects
DKC3: Seriouser Monkey Business Also, as a person who honestly doesn't really listen to that many VGRemixes, I have to say this project is shaping up very nicely and a lot of the tracks are absolutely killer. If I was anticipating this project I'd definitely be looking forward to the next preview (which I hope to facilitate). -
Need help getting started with synths.
The Vagrance replied to masterpain56's topic in Music Composition & Production
You'll probably want to look at getting a sampler as opposed to a synth, because while a synth can do a lot of cool things reproducing natural sounds is usually best done through samplers. I'd look at Native Instruments Kontakt 4 first because its pretty much the sampler of choice for most people. -
First off, [spoilerS] for anyone who hasn't seen the series, specifically the first book. Also there are a few spoilers to the movie but I'm only spoiling the really dumb stuff that happens. Also, I've seen the series twice and adored it, but I also wasn't expecting it to be a word-for-word adaptation, my beef isn't really with the storyline changes that were made because a fair number of them were kid of neat. The race thing really isn't that much of an issue, I mean it was a pretty diverse cast overall I felt like. The issues are in order: the writing, the editing, the acting, and the directing. The writing is simply godawful. From such gems as "Airbenders should be killed. KILL HIM!" to "I'm Commander Zhao, you fell into my trap" (Said after the person was clearly trapped). Then there was the problem of M. Night saying what was happening on screen instead of assuming that people would get it, and the problem of shit being in the movie for little to no reason (Aang's talk about meditation being the most obvious and laughable one). The editing isn't much better, either. Given that there's about 7 hours to condense he had to be strategic in what to include, but instead of doing that he just threw in a bunch of plotlines. The plotlines that I can remember are: 1. The budding friendship between the three main characters 2. Aang realizing all of his friends are dead 3. The romance subplot between Aang and Katara 4. Learning about becoming the Avatar 5. Visiting the Earth kingdom to see the current state of things 6. Zuko being banished 7. The Zuko/Zhao rivalry 8. Aang being captured and rescued 9. Aang's reasoning for being gone for 100 years 10. Sokka and the Princess's relationship 11. The moon spirits I'm just going to stop now, but you get the point that for an hour and forty minute long movie this is a lot to fit in. Honestly he should've either lengthened the running time and cut more from the main storyline because as is things just kind of happen on screen with no real explanation. I feel bad for anyone watching this movie that HASN'T seen the series. The acting ranges from passable to awful (Sokka and Zhao occupying the latter) but honestly I'm not sure how much of it was the writing and how much of it was the acting. I feel like the main ensemble (aside from Sokka) could work with better writing and had the series started off on a good foot it would've been interesting to see their progression as the movies came out but at the moment it was painful to watch. Lastly, the directing, which was probably just mediocre overall. For some reason M. Night zooms way in on the actors for the dialog sequences (poor choice) and there were a couple of shots that were so bad to the point that you weren't even sure they were real (Like when the moon spirit dies the camera zooms into Iroh's eyeball and then zooms back out). That said, the fight scenes were well directed and had some neat ideas (specifically the long take action sequences) but even then they didn't really flow naturally. [END SPOILERS] If you have to see it, find a way to see it without paying for it. I kind of feel bad I put money towards this movie.

Just....don't, unless you enjoy really bad versions of things that are awesome.

Term ideas for "VGM with lyrics over it" (for brentalfloss)
The Vagrance replied to Liontamer's topic in General Discussion
What is this even pertaining to anyway? Are you talking about someone singing over like, Green Hill Zone or something? Is this video game songs that already have lyrics, like that song from Final Fantasy X? Is this just a song about video games with lyrics, like nerdcore or something? -
Do you have a favourite time signature?
The Vagrance replied to Fernito's topic in General Discussion
I love weird time signatures but rarely throughout the song, I'm much more partial to bands/songs that can switch time signatures in a song and make it work. That said my favorite time signature usage would probably be in Mew's "Cartoons and Macrame Wounds" (it has 6/8, 11/4, and a couple of other ones briefly too IIRC) -
help me find DnB loops

Just download a shit ton of breaks and listen to other DnB songs to figure out how to sequence them. A lot of my breaks I got off of the Dogs on Acid forums. -
Creating synth sounds with lots of attack/pluck
The Vagrance replied to ambinate's topic in Music Composition & Production
As said before, envelopes are obviously key, but its usually more than just the amp envelope. Try experimenting with the filter envelope (obviously) as well as the pitch envelope (have the pitch start off an octave or two up for a few milliseconds before it pitches down to give it more of a sense of percussion) and any other envelope you can think of, generally following the same rules: Little-to-no attack, decent amount of decay, and little-to-no sustain. You can also try just layering percussive sounds on top of your stab sounds in a sampler or something. -

+1 for Bandcamp, its the hot new thing for a reason. -
Tunes pretty solid though RK

What new album dissapointed you?
The Vagrance replied to The Dual Dragons's topic in General Discussion
- Fucking Sleigh Bells, the press is all over them and they're the new hot indie band but I find them mediocre at best, and this is after seeing them live (which, if I was going to enjoy them, that would've been the place). - Noisia's album was slightly disappointing, but mainly because it wasn't as groundbreaking as I think everyone was hoping it would be, still a solid album though. - Foxy Shazam has gotten increasingly worse, which is sad because their first album had - The Hold Steady's new album is pretty bad, which also sucks because their first 3 albums are phenomenal, and Stay Positive wasn't bad either. I'm sure they still kill it live but damn what a shame. Its not all bad though because I actually kinda like Pendulum's new album. Its not great, and some tracks on it are pretty cringeworthy (I'm staring straight at you "Comprachicos") but overall its not the suckfest I found In Silico to be, so +1 to you Pendulum. -
Izotope Ozone 4 or Voxengo?
The Vagrance replied to Level 99's topic in Music Composition & Production
Pretty much, although the comparison between Ozone and Voxengo is weird because Ozone has a very clear purpose (quick, easy, effective in-box mastering) whereas Voxengo's plugins run a wide gamut of effects and intended uses. If you're looking for something to slap on the master channel its hard to beat Ozone if you're staying in box. -
No "s", just Aphex Twin. Sorry, that bugs me. I have no idea as to whether or not one of you guys can sing or not but here are some general band ideas: 1. Devo (although they have both an electric and a bass guitar you could figure out a way around that) 2. The Roots or a lot of other rap groups (person on drums, one on bass, one on sampler, someone rapping.) 3. The Faint (pretty much any song but their album Danse Macabre has little guitar/bass) 4. Depeche Mode 5. Death From Above 1979 (Their songs "Do It!" and "Going Steady" come to mind for a vocals/bass/synth/drums arrangement) 6. Gorillaz (A lot of their songs probably fit this) 7. (if you have a vocalist who has balls)8. Jukebox the Ghost (Only works if you have a vocalist, but all of their songs are vocals/guitar/piano/drums) 9. Legowelt - The Dimension Door 10. Neon Indian 11. Pendulum (although this will likely require a vocalist and a willingness to compromise as far as synth sounds go, as well as a good drummer) 12. Phoenix 13. The Prodigy (Also requires a good drummer, and a willingness to use reggae samples depending on how far back into their discography you go) Those are my probably terrible ideas.
