  1. I wouldn't say it's a "non-OCR corner". It isn't a perfect comparison, but Children of the Monkey Machine has a similar style and he's one of the most posted remixers on the site. I think the mbira would be the easiest thing to vary, like maybe incorporate some tape effects as everything else gets more intense or something, i dunno
  2. Doesn't sound too muddy or cluttered to me. But it's definitely close in some parts. On the other hand you do a really good job of having so many different things going on at once, yet they all lock into the groove really well. Maybe one thing to think about would be the individual volume levels.
  3. Opening reminds me of Efterklang a bit. Really nice sounds here, the piano isn't the greatest but it's alright. What is that instrument doubling the piano melody? Seems too shrill compared to all those bell/piano sounds you have going on, I don't think it fits so well...Those strings in the background are a really nice touch though. Aw man the change up totally threw off the groove...Feels like it's missing something. The fact that the drums don't change up at all doesn't help, but I don't think they need to change. This section feels like it needs to be this huge powerful changeup, only the way it is now it is less powerful than the part before it. dunno if that makes any sense. This is really cool though, keep it up.
  4. This is really good. The part from 1:49-2:14 kind of bugs me though. Too much low end overpowering everything else. The way the overdriven synth leads into that section makes it seem like it's supposed to be the huge upbeat climax section, but the balancing issues really kill the energy for me. Other than that, I really like this.
  5. Too bad about it being rejected, I really like this. I'm not really a fan of the crowd noises though, I think it clashes with the mood established by everything else.
  6. I think part of the reason this song sounds like there is no direction is that it sounds like one huge drawn out ending, due to the fact that it is pretty much all perfect cadences. Granted the original is pretty much the same, only it has a lot more variation in the supporting parts, whereas in this mix it is pretty much just strings changing inversions.
  7. This is pretty cool. Reminds me of Prefuse 73's remixes of The Books actually. It is a little repetitive but in a sort of Electric Counterpoint kind of way. Not so sure I like the ending though.
  8. Borrowing musical ideas (i.e. melodies, chord progressions, etc.) has occurred in some form or another in every style or genre of music that has ever existed. Sampling isn't really any different.
  9. There's definitely similarities, but sounds like it's all been chopped up on an MPC. Like Tricklozen said, it has that descending note pattern.
  10. I wasn't arguing what you posted, Harmony. I was just kind of making a statement. I agree with everything you said against me
  11. Well the sounds are noticeably cheesy FL sounds, but I like the way you used them. Reminds me of PINE*am. One thing I would suggest is taking out the trills in the melody, they don't really work in this context, especially with a faster tempo. It's not a bad start.
  12. Yeah, I was just responding based on what he said about learning the "workings of genres" in which learning theory wouldn't be as helpful as just listening to music and trying to emulate it. Maybe I'm just taking basic theory for granted.
  13. Studying music theory - especially at the rudimentary levels - won't really help you with this at all. Especially early on it would really only give you a very basic, technical knowledge (e.g. writing scales, identifying chords/intervals, etc.) You would probably benefit the most from listening to bands/artists who create the kind of music you want to, then taking the ideas you like and trying to replicate them.
  14. OiNK was great for obscure and out of print stuff. It was like digital crate digging. Gonna miss it.
  15. hey cool somebody liked my song I'm glad you enjoyed it
  16. Yeah I guess I should have said of their recent albums. I don't listen to The Bends anymore though so to me that album is inaccessible I guess.
  17. it's a good album, probably Radiohead's most accessible yet.
  18. oh I totally forgot about this I guess there is still time though.
  19. oh man i'm getting a 'song for my father' vibe from this one I'll see if I can get something together.
  20. nobody listens to linkin park who is not 13
  21. A decent project. I only ended up keeping 7 songs though (Materia Junkie, Chasing the Storm, JENOVA Celestial, Daydreaming Again, Midnight at Club Corel, Fading Entity, and Hydrophone Breakdown). As a singular album it's just too disjointed to listen to from beginning to end, but I guess that's inevitable in a project with such a broad scope. 'Midnight at Club Corel' is probably my favourite song out of all of them, though the straight-over-swing rhythms and constant shifting between the two at around 3:20 were kind of off-putting to me. I noticed a similar thing in 'Brinstar Bonsai Garden', I don't really understand why he does that.
