OCR01419 - Paperboy (C64) "Smooth Delivery"
Radiowar replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
yeah my thoughts exactly, the flow is so nineties it's not bad, though I prefer myth's more recent hip hop stuff, his delivery has improved since this song. edit: no pun intended -

Chrono Trigger - Manoria Cathedral ReMix
Radiowar replied to Robotaki's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
i keep coming back to this thread to listen to this song fiiiiinish it after listening to it a bunch of times i think you can ignore my last post. just put an ending in there and it's perfect. -
I liked the books as a kid, so I'll probably see the movie sometime. I'd be surprised if it was as good as the books though.

here is an update lullaby (take two) not a perfect performance, too lazy to edit anything. still not 100% where i want to take the arrangement though. I feel like the theme introduced in the beginning occurs too often through the piece unchanged. either way I'm hoping to get this done as quickly as possible to take advantage of the queue while it's still short

Christmas music is good. I think I'll try something.

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror - Opening Theme
Radiowar replied to Nav's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
yeah definitely got an omni trio sound to this. deceptively simple. not sure if it would pass though, the judges might say it's too repetitive. I think it's great, though I'm not so sure about that crash at the end. -

Not fully developed yet, but the main ideas are there. This is sort of inspired by Stephen Moccio's solo piano stuff I think. Sorry about the quality, I had my laptop with me so I recorded it through the built in microphone. lullaby

yeah this reminds me of my weapons factory remix in that it sounds like 2 separate ideas combined together. not that it's a bad thing, lots of great songs are made like that, you just gotta find a way to make it sound logical. the beginning sort of sounds like what Avien's version of this song (except your piano is a lot more erratic and jumpy, which kinda bugs me, personal preference maybe), only it changes into a really repetitive sort of techno section. it just doesn't make sense to me, i don't really see how the two fit together aside from connections to the original melody.

Zelda OOT - Tree Beater (Deku Tree Mix)
Radiowar replied to jigwolf's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
This seems about 2 minutes longer than it needs to be...Way too much repetition. It wouldn't be so bad, only the supporting parts aren't terribly engaging. The drums are a pretty cliched loop and you don't have any bass, so the whole song lacks energy. I like what you did with the Link voice sample though. I don't think this is terrible or anything, and the ideas here aren't too bad, but you could be doing way more with this. -

Good hip hop isn't a thing of the past...2007 was a great year for hip hop. Here's a small list of albums you should check out. Blu & Exile - Below the Surface Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass Dälek - Abandoned Language Blue Scholars - Bayani Mr. J. Medeiros - Of Gods and Girls All albums which make extensive use of samples in the beats. -
OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
Radiowar replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
I agree with Martin Penwald. The top bar doesn't exactly hog space, so removing it doesn't seem helpful. -
These are great. Your style kind of reminds me of Nujabes.

Donkey Kong Country 2 Hive WIP
Radiowar replied to Sam Ascher-Weiss's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The groove here is really good, I had the melody from 1:09 stuck in my head all morning. Can't wait for the finished version! -
I dunno, having never heard the source, a lot of this seems pretty random to me. You never stick with an idea that gives me a sense of where I am in the song. Production issues aside, the mix just doesn't seem to have any logical progression to it. I think that's the main thing you should be paying attention to, rather than production and sound quality things.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike - Midnight Skirmish
Radiowar replied to Theory of N's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Can't comment on the arrangement, but it sounds pretty good so far. I really like your use of piano, it would be nice if it wasn't always so isolated though. Maybe after the break at 1:05 have it keep playing? I don't know. Seems like the more synth heavy parts of the mix could use something like that. Not sure about the vibes, they seem to clash with everything else when they're so exposed like that. The second half sounds like nearly an exact repeat of the first half, so it might help to introduce a new idea the second time around. I think the bass could be louder as well. -

Jay-Z song uses Chrono Trigger sample? **FALSE - MYTHBUSTED**
Radiowar replied to chrono26's topic in General Discussion
Is there a difference? The only real change has been that artists who sample can use actual recordings of songs instead of performing or sequencing it themselves, and why shouldn't they? I can't speak for everybody who samples, but I know when I sample it's not because I think "Oh hey I like this melody, it's better than anything I could come up with on my own so I'll just take it and call it a day." I sample because there is a certain sound or quality about a particular recording that I like that makes me think "well what if it was used in a different context?" Why would he change the sounds? It isn't the notes he's after. Just as an example, look at what RZA did when he sampled 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'. The song came out sounding like some lame watered down R&B cover of the original, because he didn't directly sample, he just borrowed the chord progression. And then take The Roots (ironically praised for being the only hip hop artists that "play instruments") who directly sampled 'You and Whose Army?' by Radiohead. It came out maintaining the haunting quality of the original, while sounding like an entirely new song at the same time. Not sure what you mean by this. If anything it's NOT "ok in the music business". I'd be willing to bet that the majority of the times lawsuits are brought against artists who sample, it is initiated by record companies, while the original composers actually don't have a problem with it, and even encourage it. Even Steve Reich supported The Orb for sampling 'Electric Counterpoint' in one of their songs. -
Yeah like I said it isn't a perfect comparison, but it's probably the closest you'll find on this site. The one that I was specifically thinking of was 'Norfair (Frailty Awaiting)'. The only real similarity is that both incorporate a lot of white noise and ambience (real ambience) and don't follow conventional forms.

Radiowar replied to chrono26's topic in General Discussion
Timbaland has done just as many beats using samples as he has without samples. But even if he hadn't does that really make him any less of a composer? What about people like Steve Reich or Pierre Schaeffer who have composed music using only tape loops? Or even Mozart himself who was pretty well known for borrowing ideas from other composers. Like I said before, this has been common practice in music for forever, and the only difference these days is that producers have the ability to sample directly from recordings, and why shouldn't they?
