OCR01742 - *YES* Chrono Trigger 'Behind the Sealed Door'
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
I actually though the transition was a little clumsy, not bad though. The choir could have used a bit more reverb, its pretty dry. I'm with palpable on the drums, too tame, and they just fade in, instead of having any entrance. The piano parts are very well put together though, and the overall arrangement works well. It's hard to have the prelude in a mix and not have it take over everything, so in that respect its well merged. Whilst the whole thing is well thought out, and the two themes work well together, I couldn't help but feel that the execution could have more energy. It seemed quiet and subdued at times. The arrangement itself is sweet, and while there are little problems here and there, I don't really think they're that significant overall. YES -

A while ago I decided Kain would be my mascot for obvious reasons. He's a backstabbing pile of awesome with a massive pointy stick! -
Just a few things on top of what's been said: The same weak four on the floor was there the whole way through the track. Likewise a lot of the synth patches used seemed a little stock preset in nature, with no attempt to beef them up having been made. Whilst that might not be the case, its the impression I got from listening to it. For example; the intro synth, which sounds like a lead and a bass combined, was supposed to be carrying the track. In practice it didn't have enough energy to really do it properly. Try using some chorus to widen it out and maybe a bit of distortion to give it some edge, or make better use of compression to get the whole thing sounding bigger and louder. A few other things about the drums. Its not usually a good idea to use delay on a kick drum, it tends to undermine the power of the four on the floor, which should have the emphasis. Also you don't have a snare or a clap in sight. There should be something re-enforcing the 2nd and 4th beats. Lastly the hi-hat stuff is very sparse, one or two random hits per bar. Try and use them a little more consistently. NO (keep at it though)

After turning my very loud speakers up to nearly full I could just about hear something happening in the first 40 seconds, but really, if I'm being forced to crank my speakers to hear anything at all, theres something wrong. More or less everything is too quiet and then you have one or two things that end up sounding comparably huge, and the result isn't convincing. The samples aren't the greatest quality, but you haven't really helped them out too much. I know there are some good enough free samples out there (squidfont) that can produce some believable sounds when use properly, so your production values need to be strong to get the best of them. Make sure everything is audible through track volumes and EQ, find some nice reverb settings and pan everything so that it blends, as opposed to conflicts with itself. In terms of writing and arranging; I know you were aiming at a semi-orchestral style, but aren't we missing a few layers somewhere? Parts like 1:53 should have some harmonies in different instruments, and there should be generally more part interaction. For the most part I can hear only a bassline and a unison lead, nothing else. There aren't any chords or intervals other then octaves anywhere. Listening to the source I can hear harmonies and chords everywhere that you've actually omitted, so instead of interpreting and adding to the strengths of the original, you've actually removed them. Listen to some more orchestral music and keep an ear out for these sorts of things and note how grand and full it makes the overall sound. Try posting something in the wips forum and hopefully you'll get some advice from people with more orchestral experience then I have, but for now this isn't well constructed, and not very idiomatic arranging. NO

On reflection thats a bad idea. People would start ignoring valid criticism from the non Pro-Reviewers.

I support these suggestions.

While I think you're exaggerating the uselessness of the forum, I do agree that one of the vices is the bad or pointless advice from the less experianced users. While it would be bad to suggest that new users shouldn't use the forum, I think we should look at some kind of recognition for good wip reviewers. I remember saying a little "OCR approved reviewer' title or soemthing could be encouraging. Also the irc channel #ocrwip is great for getting some real time feedback. I'm pretty much always idling in there when I'm at my computer, and I'm usually happy to give stuff a listen on request.

Where do you get your VG sheet music?

If you've ever met someone with perfect pitch, you'll know theres no such thing as a grey area. It doesn't matter if its 12 notes in a horribly dissonant chord and they don't know what the notes are called. You give them a piano and about 15 seconds, they'll show you how to play it. -

Climbing update: They replaced the crash mat floor with... a floor... Whats the point of a crash matt that fucking hurts to land on? Don't fuck with shit thats not broken. I feel like I'm gonna break my legs if i fall now. Great. On the plus I'm on-sighting pretty much all V1's I come across. If they let us, I might have to take a video at some point, as V1 probably means nothing to you guys.

OCR01754 - *YES* Castlevania 2 'Castle of Tears'
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Cheesy ass intro, in a good way. Production is a problem. Everything sounds buried, like you got a filter on everything taking out your hi ends. Over compression doesn't help it either. Kick doesn't cut through as it should, the snare is probably the only thing that does. I think what we really need to be doing is calming down the compressor, and doing some EQ cuts instead to make room. The leads are also very quiet, they should be the focus so bring them up. The arrangement in general is great. Huge energy. Well adapted to the style, crazy bass lines, nice little string interludes, its all good. My mind just exploded from the awesomeness of the arrangement at 3:51 til 4:44, but now I want to hear it combined with some awesome mixing. I don't think the mixing is a big enough issue to need a resub, but an hours tweaking would really bring this to life imo. Because you're gonna be doing some work on it anyway for DS's conditional vote or a resub, I'm gonna go conditional aswell. YES Conditional; Less compression, work on the EQ -
OCR01752 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Searching the Woods'
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Great timbres on the recording, very old school. Intonation issues on the string instruments, which sound quite exposed due to the panning. Loving the free arrangement; Jazzy improv going on for all instruments. Feeling the pizz bass one in particular. Lots of close harmony in the lower registers is jarring, but suddenly the panning makes sense, because they don't interfere too much. The intonation, recording quality and the loose playing could be seen as downers, but in this case I agree with Malcos, in that they add character to the piece. The volume and tuning are probably my main two issues, but I can overlook the tuning, its not atrocious or anything. YES On condition that you fix the volume. Optional: Re-recording with a tighter performance. Imo it would be worth it. -
Electric Geetard, for about 5/6 years now. I can blag simple enough keyboards and my bass is great for about 5 minutes, then my pluckin fingers get tired.

OCR01853 - *YES* Faxanadu 'Ce pays me rend mauvais'
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
After a big round of Handbags with anso, andy and larry in irc, I'm sticking to my guns on this one. The melody is entirely re-constructed to sound like the original, from the notes down to the sounds used, therefore the melodic arrangement is practically zero, even if the harmonic arrangement is all kinds of awesome. It wasn't just the main melody either, it was all 3 channels from the original, which is taking the concept of reproducing to the extreme. I think we agreed that this was just too much verbatim (in both pitch and timbre) source use. The main issue of the irc chat was the difference between covering the source, and a total copy of it being acceptable or not. Andy thought the rest of the track made up for it, me and Larry didn't, so thats a NO. I don't really have anything new to add other then my distaste for the guitar sound (I had to stop eating my dinner because it was making me feel ill, it was like eating on a warbly plane). I won't dispute that this is groovy as hell, and the additions are funky as, especially the 1:23 parts and the glitch stuff later on. PS, CHz will likely have me fired for this splitting this vote, so its been a fun three days. -

People can have natural perfect pitch without being musicians in any way. Likewise, perfect relative pitch can be natural or trained. A good ear is a good ear. -
We did a random lot bet at work, so apparently I want Netherlands to win. GO NETHERLANDS!

We have more or less every console (handheld included) since the ps one minus the xbox 360, and the Ps3 gets most use in general, but I still play with my ps2 or my pc more. The Wii sadly, gets bugger all use these days, I just can't get into it at all. Once brawl is released this month (damn europe) I can garauntee that will change, as I'm totally addicted to Melee. The only reason the gamecube isn't the most used console in my house is because we usually go to my other mates house to play smash.

Has any one heard of the new live action dbz movie?

As long as the 1 to 20 minutes it takes for Goku to do a Kamehameha are awesome, I will love the movie. And if he doesn't do one... what was the point of the movie?
