  1. The source has kind of been simplified, but I know how difficult classical guitar arrangements can be, and thats probably why Pot Hocket uses two guitars . This arrangement is simple, but effective. I was a bit concerned about the B sections after palp's issues, so I checked out the source more closely, and found a fit for it. During the quiet string parts towards the end of the source, there's a rising bass note pattern which you can clearly hear in the bass line during the 1:06 to 1:28 part. The later section starts with it, but then seems to go its own way. Regardless, that pushed it well over 50% source use as far as I'm concerned. In other words, arrangement good. I do actually have a few production nits to pick. The low strings on the guitar are resonating very loudly compared to the higher strings. I wouldn't complain if you wanted to EQ the bass frequencies down just a little. Also the volume was very quiet in general, I'm sure this could be brought up without the need from compression. Lastly, a little more reverb would've been nice imo. These are all minor minor subjective things, in no way deal breakers. This is well performed and enjoyable. Simple enough pass, but if anyone else agrees on my nitpicks, its probably worth a quick call to see if the mixer agrees. YES
  2. (Massively simplified cause most of it was repeats of other votes) Looking at the source use breakdown, and after doing my own, I came out at just under half of the total time has any source use. Its very possible that I'm just not recognising some of the chord progressions cause theres so much going on in this mix, but on the other hand counting some of the jam bits in the source use could be deemed generous. Considering the production is nothing short of incredible, the liberal arrangement is the only thing holding me back here, but then again its not like the original additions aren't stunning, and stuff like the cello break could easily be based around the chord progression and I might just be missing that. I think this is comparable to Another Soundscapes Fanfare remix in terms of liberal-ness, but without any sections reflecting the obvious Jenova section and similar motifs, its far more difficult to place in terms of the bar. When I look at this part the standards: Even if the use was over 50%, its gotten to the point where I find it hard to use the term identifiable, and near impossible to use the word dominant. I think its awesome, but every time I look at the standards, I just can't give this a yes. I'm keeping this for sure, but sorry. NO (For the love of god resub or I will fly to Sweden and kick you in the groin)
  3. Celtic rock, yeeeah. Lovely flute sound, reminds me of camel. First thing is obvious, the guitars are very thin as andy said. If their lack of low-end was catered for with a fuller bass, they would be as much of a problem, but there's far too much space down there. You have no mid to low on them, they're all treble. This just makes them sound tinny and thin, like their being played through a tiny practice amp. Your EQ need a huge boost in the 250-600Hz area and if you can, a smoother and louder distortion always helps to fatten things up (though its easy to over do it with this). Also try a few different compression settings on them, and maybe even a very light chorus, all of these things will help fill out the mix. The bass guitar could also benefit from a bit of a volume boost. The drum samples are a bit bland, but they're used well enough, although some of the fills are a little samey with just 8ths on random toms. Try a little more humanizing in on them. The bass drum especially sounds like every hit has the same velocity, as do the fast snare fills, such as the one at 3:05. No drummer is gonna hit with the same strength uniformly, makes it seem like a drum machine, not as believable. Overall I get an impression of band who aren't quite ready for stage, although their ideas work. Everythings there, but the polish isn't. The arrangement is minimal, more of a rock port with solos, and the orchestral break is nice within the song structure, but doesn't add any interpretation. The solo's themselves are alright, nothing too flash but they fit in nicely with the rest of the track. The duel guitars at the end were a nice touch, but they were probably the biggest example of re-arrangement in the track. I think we're in a place where both the arrangement and the production are both on the borderline. The arrangement is cover-ish with some original bits here and there, and the production isn't quite believable enough, and lacks that full energy. If you were to work on one or the other (or preferably both) you could pretty easily swing a few votes. I can see why larry could let this slide, but I wager that a few small changes can go a long way on this one. I tried palp's EQ messing on itunes and likewise, the production issues sound like a quick fix to me. I'm looking forward to hearing a rework of this. NO (Resub plz)
  4. That is the best NWGedit ever. Thanks guys :3.
  5. These drums are in dire need of some reverb near the start. The whole mix is a bit dry sounding in the first half actually, try adding some more here and there. Diggin' the arrangement though, pretty smooth.
  6. I think this is kinda different because no ones going to go "omg that wuz such a bad quotezzz, flameflameflame", they'll just laugh at the ones they remember and give their own for others to remember and laugh at. I really don't see this becoming a flame war. Also, "Let's Mosey".
  7. Did my usual climb, on-sighting V1's now, sweet. Me and my bud also went for a walk and discovered some tennis courts, so we played a full set. I lost on a tie break .
  8. *sigh* My studio is quite frankly embarrassing compared to some of these. This is all I use. Direct out on my amp into the line-in on the lappy for guitars. At least I have cake to bring me inspiration! *tear*
  9. These samples sound great! I love the combination of both booms and tsss. I may just have to buy this.
  10. I don't think theres any hard proof tbh. Never mind. Still, tetris got away with the ocr equivalent of murder .
  11. And I suppose you'll be needing the patented Fishy brand "Last Minute Licks" guitar services! Each purchase gives you one recording session with Fishy no earlier then 2 days before the final deadline. Comes with pointless whammy bar action. Fishy takes no responsibility for ruptured brains or other body parts from any awesome overloads. Refunds not available.
  12. You've got to ask a moderator to do it now, they disabled the option with the vBulliten switch.
  13. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Odyssey_%28Incubus%29 I'm pretty sure that this was written specifically for Halo 2, would that mean that it is fair game for a remix? Theres no absolute confirmation that it wasn't an inspired-by song that was later picked up by the game that I can find, so its a little bit in the grey :/. I'd only be interested in the first movement, which was definately in the game, when you're chasing the heretic around in the flying things.
  14. I can't listen to the song at the moment, but I have a quick note; If you do intend on submitting something, you will get an auto-rejection for using non-game music unless its in a very minor way.
  15. He did contribute to an OCReMix though. Spoken wurd niggz.
  16. Mp3 to MIDI doesn't work yet, you will get crappy results even from the most expensive of those crappy applications. Maybe if they were one line monophonic tunes but anything more and it'll die. Likewise, MIDI to 8-bit sounds dubious aswell. You're better off finding somone who is good with a tracker to make the .nsf chiptunes for you, I know there are a few around here. You might want a put a request in the request forum for someone to convert the OST into nsf format. I wouldn't bother until you have some screenshots of the game though or evidence that your remake is going well, most people aren't going to put in the time and effort unless they know the game project isn't going to die.
  17. I'm taking over your project one track at a time.
  18. These are so fun to watch, I hope you make more.
  19. A new arrangement of the source is exactly what the judges want actually. Remakes/covers won't pass though. ReMix is described in the submission guidelines as a coined term for re-arrangement. Also don't tell people it won't pass, then advise them to submit it anyway. Its generally a waste of yours and the judges time unless you're almost positive it will pass.
  20. Maybe a sort of mid day-ish Sunday time. Thats usually peoples relaxing day. Say 2/3pm EST? Everything I suggest is going to sound crap and awkward though, as I'm always 5 hours ahead.
  21. I need some more ideas for the best way to play smash bros: Smash Bros DRINKING GAMES! 'Auto Handicap': Winner takes a shot. 'The Knee of make my pain go away': Take a shot every time falcon knees you to make the pain go away. 'Loser goes out of it': Loser takes a shot. 'Multi-stock shock': If you get a 2-stock or a 3-stock, your shot winnings are double/tripled etc. 'Drink to survive': Put maxi tomatoes on low/medium. You must drink to use one. Anyone else got any ideas/play smash this way?
  22. Ugh, 9PM EST is like like 2am for me. How am I supposed to maul you guys in my sleep?
  23. Looking forward to it! This was a terrible joke, but I still laughed.
