  1. I know a lot of people hate this one because its radical change in direction, but I consider Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter for the PS2 to be a breath of fresh air among game sequels and JRPGs in general. I loved everything about this game, including its brutal difficulty. This game is so hardcore its save file is copy-protected. No lie. Awesome battle system, excellent music (Mitsuda and Sakimoto's only collaboration I believe), great strategic play, and a nice incentive to replay it a few times due to its unique game plus option. Trust me, you've never played a game like it before. But I can see why BoF fans shoved it away. The only one I've played before it is BoFIII for the PS1, so I'm not prone to hating a sequel that broke all traditions, including giving Ryu dialogue.
  2. Excellent stuff as usual, WillRock. Synthy/Techno-y indeed. Been listening to the Tron: Legacy soundtrack recently, catching up with Daft Punk after so long. It's really cool that this remix of yours harbors the soul of those artists. I especially like the smooth transition between Metal Man and Flash Man's tracks. Keep up the good work.
  3. Inafune leaves, Mega Man game gets cancelled. This is no coincidence. Makes me wonder what the future holds for Mega Man Legends 3. It's a shame. I was really looking forward to this. It's like the stars aligned for this game to happen, but then all of a sudden Capcom isn't interested anymore. In terms of our lovable game music community, The Megas would've gotten some huge exposure if this game were released.
  4. Poolside isn't on my radar for some reason. Haven't been following their releases. That being said, while this remix may be technically okay, I don't see myself putting it on repeat. It was the same case with their Super Meat Boy mix, too. Maybe it's just me not liking electropop much. I will say this though, thanks to Xarnax for directing me to Shine Tonight in this thread. I really liked it. After listening to it, I agree with Inferno in a sense that Poolside's latest track seems to be missing something.
  5. Wondering if this works on an iPod Touch as well? Really considering buying one just because of those Square-Enix games.
  6. So I'm now worried about the black screen of death error reports. Has anyone in OCR unfortunately have a bricked 3DS?
  7. This project is going to kick ass! Can't wait to hear these remixes because I've grown tired of the insane focus on Mega Man X1 (especially Storm Eagle's stage). The X series in general has such excellent music. My only minor disappointment is that there's not much X8 love here. Seriously, even though it's the most recent installment, the music is some of the best in the series. Lots of really cool tracks, including: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYzaN0lBT0o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlT8Hl8pdQU&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8u5TsyBtFU Nonetheless, you can't win 'em all. Happy to see you guys giving it your all.
  8. The signature tracks of this album are Air Shooter and Data Base Accessed, the former of which is such a refreshing interpretation of Air Man. With that being said, I'm kind of disappointed by the whole product to be honest. Something about the rest of the remixes rub me off the wrong way, most notably is that there's just so many sounds, samples and styles jumbled in...it's a bit too hectic for my tastes. At times I have difficulty recognizing the source material...and even when I do I feel that there's just so much filler material between the sources used I can't really associate the remixes with the original tracks anymore. The Air Man and Data Base tracks avoided these pitfalls which is why I dig them. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Castlevania, I found that the last remix album is so much better than your take on Mega Man.
  9. Just as magical as the original theme. Excellent work in transitioning from the somber intro to the cinematic take then back again. This song is so under-appreciated so it's nice to finally listen to a remix of it after so long.
  10. I want my four minutes back. Pop music has it an all-time low with crap like this. Terrible voice, terrible lyrics, stupid video. I can go on with complaints.
  11. I just started playing this game. An hour in so far and I'm so overwhelmed despite the streamlined menus. And this is coming from a hardcore Final Fantasy Tactics fan. Everyone says that this Tactics Ogre installment in particular blows FFT out of the water...we'll see if this is true as I play on. Sakimoto's music is excellent as usual. English translation is spot-on thanks to Alexander O. Smith. One thing I don't like is the huge discrepancy between the remade backgrounds and the old-school sprites. The latter looks really blurred for some reason compared to everything else. Also, an excellent translation like this could've really used some good voice acting, but that's just me nitpicking. BTW, I somehow find myself always drawn to Yasumi Matsuno's games. FFT was my introduction to strategy RPGs back in the day. Then, Vagrant Story came along and rocked my world. Only one that I really wanted to devote more time to is FFXII.
  12. Oh, you sly dog, you. Just played a few hours of PE1 on the PSP. Not bad. That intro cutscene still kicks ass...and the music is simply amazing. I always had some tracks memorized in my head, particularly the police station one. The gameplay sort of resembles Vagrant Story in a way, only the enemies attack you in real-time as opposed to you attacking in turn-based fashion. Can't wait for The Third Birthday, though I can't believe Square-Enix are releasing two PSP games in the same month. Not a good idea. I would prefer to give Aya's return more breathing room.
  13. Been a follower of Vurez before his OCR submissions. There was this awesome Bright Man rock remix he had awhile back, from VGMix was it? Anyway, I declare this to be the best Tetris remix ever! Sounds so authentic to Russian folk songs despite me not being a big wiz of those. It just feels Russian for some reason. Reminds me of Smash Bros' Brawl Type B's remix. This one is just as good, too. Keep on rocking, Vurez.
  14. Quite the contrary in my case. I really enjoyed PE2, more-so than the first. Appreciated that the sequel was more real-time and had more "survival horror" elements infused to the RPG base. Speaking of which, who's going to download the original PE on PSN? Even though I prefer the sequel, I still wanna re-live the original again. Haven't played it in YEARS so I don't remember a thing other than Mitochondria.
  15. Thanks for putting this back up, man! Lots of good entries there, including Malcos' track of course. Your mashup one is pretty good as well...really fits the track. Would've been cool if they modified the original submission a bit, but it is what it is. Still not a bad track.
  16. Can't believe I skipped out on this back in the PS1 days. Recently downloaded it and have gotten addicted playing it on my PSP. Sadly, Vagrant Story pushed it aside. I can't believe how good this game is though. As a huge Zelda fan (played and completed all installments aside from the CD-i ones), I went into it expecting a rip-off but man I was so wrong. Even though it's similar to Zelda's top-down action/RPG gameplay, Alundra does so many things differently. The puzzles are outside-of-the-box from the get-go and jumps can get pretty tricky. The music is just awesome, never grow tired of the village theme (grows on you with that "ugh" vocal sample, someone needs to remix that). I absolutely love the localization as well. Working Designs is truly ahead of its time in terms of Japanese to English game translation. Also, going into people's dreams is a fun gameplay mechanic. Really need to continue playing it someday.
  17. The whole soundtrack of Mario Strikers Charged for Wii. Insanely addictive and abnormally high production values for a Mario Sports game. The composers are relatively unknown in the gaming industry, but they experiment with a lot of genres in the game, leaning toward rock. The themes of the characters alone are immensely unique, but there are a lot of stand-out tracks playing in the arenas themselves, most notably this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HvqGlz7_Iw I pick this stadium just for its music. Here are some other cool tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCgafcp2jAQ&feature=related Somebody from OCR really, really, really needs to remix one of these tracks!
  18. Always love mentioning this example: (Journey - Faithfully)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns0NSzqnjvA (Elec Man - Mega Man 1) To tell you the truth, I've only recently listened to Faithfully via a friend a year ago. As soon as I heard that piano intro, I screamed Elec Man. Immediately fell in love with the song though. You know what would be challenging? If someone in OCR remixes Elec Man with vocals, yet tries to avoid Journey's vocal melodies and harmonies while keeping the 80s rock power ballad vibe.
  19. Good points...perhaps the context of usage is what people took offensively more than the method of usage. It's really interesting seeing that Islamic sample pack popping everywhere like that. I only thought Ocarina of Time used it but apparently it's sort of popular.
  20. I remember hearing from DragonAvenger that you're the original singer. Would be cool if you did backing vocals or interchanged certain verses with Prophet should you guys ever get back to remastering it. You've got a pretty cool voice...remember first hearing it from a DoD track (a remix of Sakura's theme, was it?).
  21. I guess I'm one of those "too many to count" people. Interesting insight. Although I'll tell you this: most of the games I've won are from past-generation systems, particularly the NES, SNES, n64, and PS1 games. As time passed by, I've been completing less and less games...currently to the point that it becomes "Games I've played vs. Games I own but haven't played". Sad I know.
  22. First off, the samples used in the tracks you've provided are definitely from the same pack. This is the first time I've known that Crusin' and Parasite Eve have those same samples as well. My knowledge was limited to Ocarina of Time. Just to clarify, these are not chants per-se. They're actually special sayings or prayers us Muslims use in our daily lives. You'll notice in the videos I provided that the prayer "Bism Illah Al-Rahman Al-Raheem" (In the name of God, most gracious, most merciful) is used as the opening verses when reciting the Quran. That's just one method of usage. We usually say the prayer regularly before beginning any task for the intention of completing it successfully with the blessings of God. The other sample used in the game tracks is "Allah Akbar", which translates to "God is Great". Again, this is not a chant or part of the Quran per-se. It has many applications including prayers, casual use, and repeated in many variations within the Quran itself. It's most popular application is its usage in "athan" before prayer times, like so: Personally, its implementation in Ocarina of Time is the most faithful to the source material. Wasn't offensive to me at all as the composition was minimalistic and the focus was on the verses themselves, not the instruments. Crusin's usage, however, is sort of a no-no. Parasite Eve 2's is not bad as well. EDIT: there's also part of the sample in Ocarina of Time which I have difficulty recognizing as the words are muffled at best. It definitely sounds like he's reading from the Holy Quran as you've seen in the first videos I've provided (similar methods of citation), but the verses or words themselves are unrecognizable.
  23. Man...never played Radical Dreamers nor I'm familiar with its music. This project has so much soul it just turned me into an instant fan. I still have the Thieves of Fate track in the loop. Listening to it right now reminded me of how awesome this project is. It's truly one of the best vocal remixes of OCR in my opinion. Awesome singing by prophet, awesome acoustics by Taucer, awesome electric guitar by level 99. Surprised that it's never been submitted to OCR as a track.
  24. Wow...such a blast from the past, indeed. About time! Loved the track back then when I caught eye of the competition and love it now. Curious whether if there was any modifications to the OCR version. I would've linked you guys to the competition thread itself so that everyone can check out the results, but sadly the links are down. There were some awesome tracks from Jillian herself and even rap versions by zyko and Chlorophil. Been a participator of VOCR ever since. We need more tracks submitted from these competitions, specifically one that Liontamer has been dying to see on the site. Ironically, Malcos is in charge of the composition itself (not doing any singing) and Hale-Bopp provides the vocals. This is the best occasion to get Over Oceans Blue submitted! Do it, Malcos and Hale!
