OCR01910 - Chrono Cross "Through Time and Space"
abg replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow, thanks for posting my ReMix so promptly I really appreciate it. Also stoked on a lot of the comments from the guys in the judges panel, you guys kick ass! I was going for something pretty different here (a trance track with only a minute and a half of unts?!) and the focus was definitely on atmosphere and texture, so I hope people enjoy that quality of the mix. -
Maybe you already know about this, but I just noticed and felt inclined to mention. BBCode from the Comments/Reviews threads is visible on the ReMix write-up page. I noticed when I commented on tefnek's new mix, here: http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01907/

Epic, must d/l! That bass is nasty!

After playing Secret of Mana I was super stoked to play Evermore, but that game waaaaay overdid it with the mazes It made me stop playing. Looking bad, as a kid I didn't realize how poorly translated a lot of the dialog in those retro games were. But even now it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of them. There's only one game I loved as a kid that I just can't play anymore, and its... Super Mario World. It just feels so tedious now... no where near as fun as Super Mario Bros 1 and 3.

I was perfectly content not caring about this game, and then they had to go add Daft Punk to it FFS! All the same, I burned out on Guitar Hero waaay before the third one came out, so I'll wait and see the game at a friend's place before I rush out to buy it.

OCR01902 - Kirby: Canvas Curse "I Want You Inside Me"
abg replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Great work, I really love your style! It's a perfect fusion of chiptune and electronic... keep 'em coming! -
@Jade: You should take a look at the first couple pages of the thread for the Xenogears project. The poor guy got off to a bad start with lots of people telling him "you can't do it". Yet, here we are now and the project is a couple weeks away from release (which I've been anticipating ). Don't let people get you down, if you want to see this project become reality, then you can make it happen!

This kicks ass! Nice glitch work too, fits perfectly in the flow of the track.

I remember hearing your FF8 Fisherman's Aura remix and really enjoying it, then I saw in the comments that this was French Electro which made me go O_O And then I listened to it and went O_O Seriously awesome work!

I'm not sure how long this thread is gonna last, but I want to inject something useful into it before it's gone, being as though I'm really interested in trance remixes I'm not going to recommend remixes, but rather remix artists. You should check these guys out and download everything in their remixographies! In alphabetical order: abg (yep, self plug!), bLiNd (duh), cyborg jeff, E-Bison (check out Time Management!), FFMusicDJ, Jewbei, SGX, Siamey, and Strike911. I was suprised that I couldn't find any of Strike911's trance remixes on OCR so his link goes to his personal website for the goodies (just click on Music). Some of these guys have non-trance remixes as well so if at first you don't get what you're looking for, just try downloading something else from them. I've probably forgotten some people so if I remember, I'll revise this post with an edit! Also, you could view all the OCReMixes that have been tagged as "trance" by clicking here. For all the trance remixes at VGMix, click here. Downloading and listening to all these should take you about a week, so take your time and enjoy!

New video! -Video Games and the Female Audience-
abg replied to sephfire's topic in General Discussion
Okay, that Cho Aniki series looks rightly bizarre! And yet I don't know if its fair to say that its any stranger than any other game I've played. The most enjoyable games rarely make any realistc sense, haha As for our discussion on segregation, its probably a more complicated topic than can be easily summarized and I think there's some truth to what each of us is saying. Its worth noting that we both touched on the fact that girls don't like guy games, and that's fine, because they generally don't like guy movies or books either. If men really are more open to games, then spending some time with women, playing the games with them that they enjoy, could potentially foster in them a deeper appreciation for the medium. It won't necessarily make them want to play Halo or Gears of War, but it might get them interested in more "middle ground" titles like Katamari or Portal. But pardon me, I'm starting to sound like my previous post! Really though, this perception of there being separation and it being some sort of problem only aggravates the situation. Its basic law of attraction stuff if you happen to prescribe to that way of thinking. If we stop drawing a line between hardcore games and casual games, then we realize that pretty much every North American already is a gamer and this whole conversation falls apart. -
New video! -Video Games and the Female Audience-

That's not really a fair comparison, though. These scantily-clad women in our games are frequently portrayed in a sexual way, whereas the men never are (Voldo aside...) If they were to put someone like Hard Gay on the cover of a game I bet you most guys would stick up their nose and move on. I think sephfire hit the nail on the head quite early on in his video when he said something along the lines of "Maybe the reason girls aren't interested in our games is because of all the breasts, space marines and explosions." They don't go for movies like that, so why would they go for games like that? However, he also pointed out that according to surveys, girl gamers actually outnumber guy gamers! Anyone who's been paying attention has probably known this for a couple of years now (I know I have). Working at a video games retailer, I sold more DSes and Wiis to girls than guys. It just so happens that girls tend to prefer a different genre of game, much like how they tend to prefer different genres of movies, books, music and everything else. There seems to be this illusion that girl gamers are segregated from guy gamers, but I think its us guys who have fabricated that illusion. We think our high-budget games with their flashy graphics and ragdoll physics are in some way superior to the casual games, and that makes us feel like we're "true" gamers while those people playing Bejewled aren't. Maybe if we let go of this notion, and spend some time playing casual games with the women in our lives it would do a world of good for everyone. Actually, there's a lot of people doing that already, so I don't think we've got anything to worry about In conclusion, Nintendo wins the console wars. -
OCR01863 - Vagrant Story "Youthful Bravery"
abg replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Man I've spent all day listening to great music, and this is a really nice way to top it off! Your perfomance is very delicate and tasteful. I'm checking out your website now too I've always been interested in playing Vagrant Story, this could serve as a little nudge to go do it. -
Okay, so I just tried it in Firefox and it looks fine! I guess its some sort of browser incompatibility thing.. it was when I was browsing with Internet Explorer 8 that the drop down loaded too high. EDIT: I just realized that the drop down only does this when I'm browsing the forums. Every other page is fine in IE8.
-
I love the new drop downs! They're really slick I do have some feedback though. It would be nice if the box could load say 20-30 pixels lower. As it is now, when you hover over a link, the drop down loads and the box is just high enough that it covers most of the other menu links to the left and right of it, meaning that you either have to move the mouse up to unload the box, or move it left/right along that 15-ish pixel row of menu that isn't covered by the dropdown. Maybe its a little hard to understand what I'm saying so I took a screenshot: http://img19.yfrog.com/i/menukxo.jpg/ You can see the drop down box is covering most of the links around it. Lowering it just a bit would make a big difference.

Considering most of the most important video games (and video game soundtracks) are Japanese, I'd take that as a compliment I gave the Hour Zero teaser a listen and I have to agree, it sounds somewhat Japanese. So, I looked around on youtube and in my personal music collection for music from western games, and to my surprise most of them have that Japanese sound too! The only soundtracks that stand out as being obviously North American are rock oriented ones (Command & Conquer for example, or liscensed soundtracks), NARPGs with atmospheric soundtracks (Diablo, Oblivion) and games with super cinematic music (Prey, Killzone, etc). So unless you wanna make some cinematic, atmospheric rock music I think you're going to be stuck being labelled as sounding Japanese!

Is Malaise and Detachment Normal during Composition?
abg replied to a topic in Music Composition & Production
Ah more along the line of technical frustrations? Yeah, FL Studio isn't really ideal for making anything along the lines of... "experimental" music, shall we say? It's really a loops program for making dance-oriented music but if you're flexible enough you can get whatever you want out of it. FL 9 looks to be implementing a new playlist more along the lines of what we've seen in traditional DAWs so it might become a bit easier to work with when 9 is released. Anyways I wouldn't call Perchance to Dream boring, its really atmospheric and hypnotic! Besides, it's not like ambient music is supposed to be exciting, its just supposed to set a mood
