OCR03540 - Super Castlevania IV "Selva Oscura"
Eino Keskitalo replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Very enjoyable longform symphonic rock track, good performances to add some extra life into it. There's a small harmonic wart with the organ at 1:47 when transitioning between parts. That's about the only thing I personally object with the track, I see a bunch of production crits but my ears were not bothered by the production. I like the variety of the instrumentation and keeping everything fresh for the whole duration is an cool achievement. It really sounds quite effortless actually. The track also has a very strong sense of forwards drive, which is nice, it constantly feels like it's going somewhere. It's also interesting that the parts do not differ greatly from another, and since everything else is clicking, this emphasizes the sense of forward momentum. -
Really loved this one, from concept to execution. Maaan, I feel like firing up the original SNES port for nostalgia AND to check out the speed of action.. I think the reinterpretation here to the new groove is very cool and more than sufficient from what I expect from an OC ReMix.. there would have been some "design space" for more variation in textures / instrumental palette / density of the arrangement - everything is pretty much playing all the time throughout as far as "thickness" of the arrangement is considered, a section in the middle where the soundscape wasn't quite as filled out could've made the arrangement "breathe" a bit more, but I'm not really complaining, it's goooood. Reminds me a bit of YMO's version of Firecracker, probably a lot because of the pentatonic scale but also tempo and some of the instrumentation. Cool debut!

I'll add to the pile: I've started all of PS1-4 and played each of them quite far, but I haven't finished any of them. (I *did* finish PS Gaiden, which is far worse than any of the mainline games though, but I played that on the go - plus it's quite easy).

Oh, that quadrilogy idea sounds cool. Dibs on "Bracky News" from Phantasy Star 2!

Some of the sections sound really great! Some of the sections sound like the chords and melody aren't working together. I think at least one is purposefully dissonant but still doesn't work for my ears. The good ones are super cool and the dynamic between quiet creepy sections and the most energetic riffs is admirable and inspiring!

@Noaxzl Welcome! I recommend joining some competitions to work those skills back up. In addition to the bigger tournament compos that happen a couple of times a year, People's Remixing Compo and Meat 'n' Potatoes are constantly ongoing, and don't have a high bar for entry. You also get some nice feedback along with the votes! Check out the competitions forum! -
I'm flattered that you keep putting me on the list but alas, I'm still tragically short on musicking time as it stands..

I did just vote. Bit short on time so I didn't type down any feedback, but maybe I'll find the time later and post it in the thread. -
OCR03470 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Popsicle"
Eino Keskitalo replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Really cool arrangement. Some of the chords feel a little "stilted" (f.ex. 0:49) to me here and there, think it could flow a bit better. The glitchy bits are really cool, nice variety of sounds. I do find the sidechaining rather excessive and pumpy in these sections particularly, to the extent that it is uncomfortable for me to listen on headphones. It's unfortunate that it's taking attention away from what is actually happening in these sections rather than highlighting it. The lead is a tad loud towards the beginning (0:38->) but it's a very minor thing and doesn't make the piece at all less enjoyable. Desipite the crits, very nice debut! Also, impressively creative on a well-trodden theme. -

@DimeTower said it very well. The pacing of this piece is excellently measured, the structure is creative but cohesive, the harmonic writing is non-straightforward but doesn't lose direction, the sound is very good indeed. Nice work! -

A little off-topic, but I'd like to provide some project files as well, if you think that's fine for the remix_attachments thing. Most of my Renoise project files happen to be self-contained, in the sense they work without needing any plugins or sample libraries apart from Renoise standard stuff. I realize this is not the case for most project files. Most of mine are also quite small in file size.

I feel it was easier to grok the amount of music a ReMixer had made for OCR on the previous artist page. I hope the numbers of ReMixes and albums projects participated in could be added to the album and ReMix widget titles. I also liked the full list of album projects on the artist page previously. Perhaps the album/ReMix titles could also say "Latest albums" and "Latest ReMixes" if the full list doesn't fit to the page, and the headers could act as links to the full album list / full ReMix list pages. I guess the same goes for the album and ReMix widgets for the organization main pages. Since at least my page has a lot of empty space below the album widget, it makes me think perhaps there could be some info about the artist's tracks on the album in that space. Nice update though! I especially like the playlist, and it's nice to have the social media links and stuff up front and prominent. I like the tabbed approach as well. -
The source material was so ready for this approach. I especially enjoyed the first third or so, that initial build-up was very cool. Perhaps not the flow isn't quite perfectly balanced throughout; there's some busy-ness here and there that kind of eats away the overall energy or impact, and some of the sounds and especially note choices I think are a bit off at the end. It gives an impression that ideas were thrown together and some final editing to bring all the ideas into line wasn't quite accomplished. That all said, it's a competent track, the flow isn't by any means bad (even if not perfect) and I could sure use some more OC ReMixes in this genre!

OCR03457 - Donkey Kong Country "Kong's Final Swim"
Eino Keskitalo replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I enjoy long-form ambient very much and this is a welcome addition to OCR catalog, personally speaking. Well paced and sounds pleasant. The guitar samples are a little funny though, and some of the pitch bends kind of stick out here and there. As a plus the samples and their usage reminds me of old school tracker tunes. The good far outweighs the minor criticisms there.
