  1. FFIV has a ton of amazing music and it was my second JRPG after Mystic Quest, so it made quite an impact. In fact, I have trouble remembering music from FF6 because that earlier experience with IV was still towering over it. Doesn't make a lot of sense with some distance & objectivity now, but there it is. Anyway, to pick a specific track.. I always recall "The Lunarians", not because it's the flashiest or the most catchy piece, but because it's simplicity and atmosphere were quite striking combined with the story and visuals associated with it, and how it's barrenness also stuck out from the rest of the soundtrack. Like "Another Moon", it captures the "magnificent desolation" of moon landscapes. edit: I think it's circling 5/4 rhythm combined with the gratuitous use of delay also help to set the mood.
  2. I heartily recommend checking out the My So Called 8-Bit Life podcast episode. Great talk, I personally took great pleasure from hearing about trackers and BBSs, the really oldschool stuff since that was definitely a big part of my nerdy youth too. But also great bits about composer response to American Album, plus I really appreciated hearing about difficulties when writing the American Pixels (time/motivation etc).
  3. I get a SNES remake feel out of this, comparing to the PC-88 original (haven't listened to the NES version). In the source, I absolutely adore the moody and sparse b-section, though it wouldn't shine without the gentle intro and twinkly arp part surrounding it. So, my favourite part here is the b-section as well, and the bell/vibes treatment is a really cool approach. OC Jazz Collective should tackle some Ys I think!
  4. Looking at the accepted mixes list, there's like two or three FF9 floods, Castlevania flood, Jorito flood, FPS flood, obscure/under-ReMixed RPG flood, unReMixed games flood, Advance Wars miniflood, Vampire Killer/Jorito/pun title miniflood...
  5. coz it's not on Linux yet I'm a medium fan of the N series. I do need to get back to it. Noticed this was out and I am gleeful.
  6. Goodness, got to check these out. I'm still looking forward to the game too, hope it won't be too long now..
  7. I had "To the Gateway" claimed, but I think I'll let it go. Too many commitments and too little time.
  8. Looks like my kind of a game! I'm hoping for a Linux version.
  9. Sounds like a cool project. In the first two tracks I thought the piano was pretty loud. On laptop speakers I thought I even heard the piano's reverb separately, as if the reverb itself was too loud. The piano (lead) could also use more humanization, each note was being hammered down which doesn't leave a lot of room for expression and takes away the power the loudest notes in the lead could have. Sanguine Moonblossom has a cool atmosphere, and the harpsichord in the bed of strings & choir worked for me (I don't think I've heard something exactly like that before). A Soldier With A Grudge had a super cool groove as well, I really liked the brass melody jumping around, "jumpy" intervals don't often work so well in melodies but I think these were good, especially since the riff beneath it has an usually large interval. Or something, like I knew what I was talking about with theory and stuff, but in any case, it was really cool. I also liked that the arrangement and mix was relatively sparse, everything had a good place and nice room to operate.
  10. I hereby explicitly state that I allow OCR to monetize my mixes on Youtube.
  11. I've made some progress, I think I'm close to getting the structure down. Hoping to do some more work next week.
  12. That was pretty solid, and it's always good to see VVVVVV getting some coverage. My ears could've used some variation on the lead guitar sound over time. I definitely appreciated the melodica!
  13. Haha, this sounds really cool. More Shovel Knight is always welcome. I'm also impressed and appreciative of trying out some new things with the format.
  14. I was just re-reading this and I can't help putting a note here that @Tuberz McGee definitely delivered.
  15. Finally backed! I haven't yet read the behind-the-scenes stuff, but I look forward to sitting down and going through them. Perhaps while enjoying the finished product. Much appreciated.
  16. My track didn't pass the panel, but it's close and I got good feedback. @Ivan Hakštok, I'm wondering how long I might have to rework it?
  17. Thanks for sharing! I like following homebrew stuff so I appreciate.
  18. I'm super-appreciative of this being a solo-guitar arrangement. It's quite simple (perhaps deceptively) but it certainly holds together without bells and whistles. Very human, makes me want to pick up the acoustic!
  19. Didn't get much more done yet, unfortunately. I'll try to hammer down a complete structure and fill it in after that.
  20. I got great feedback from Jorito and just took a fresh listen after a break; I know several things to try with track, and with the deadline that far back, I feel pretty good I can get the piece into a good shape!
  21. I've got a little bit done, but I think I'll need at least a week more. @AbsoluteZero that's looking quite good to me!
  22. Here's the notes that apparently fell through the cracks (though the write-up is now quite funny): "This summer our family has been spotting flowers, which is what this song is about. The lyrics consist of a list of Finnish wild flowers. The arrangement was done together with Birgitta Susi, who sings. We picked some tunes we both liked from ilomilo as sources. She thought Esther might like hearing a child's voice in the song, so there's the daughter and me talking a bit about the flowers in the background." There was a bit in the call-out e-mail about reaching out to artists who weren't exactly obvious choices. I never figured I was one of them! I wouldn't say this was out of my comfort zone but I guess it's different from my previous submissions. Big part of course is that it was co-arranged with Birgitta; we are long-time collaborators. It's great to have the album out!
  23. I used to (mostly) run some campaigns, playing the Middle-Earth Role Playing Game, and a Finnish RPG system Rapier/Elhendil that was all about elves. In retrospect I really sucked as a DM but I think we all had some fun. I've never played tabletop RPG sessions that were any good or if they were, lasted more than 1-2 sessions. Oh well. I still like to read rulebooks and campaign materials and stuff every now and then. It'd be cool to get to play Ars Magica for instance, and then there's the Glorantha setting, which sounds really good (gotta play King of Dragon Pass sometime). I did have RuneQuest but I don't think we ever played that one. I don't think I understood how cool it was back in the day either. It was the first RPG I had but it was too complicated for the young me and I got something more basic to get started with. Never played D&D! Anyone played over Skype or something?
  24. I'm extra happy to see this posted since I did indeed put this together quite quickly, and wasn't sure if I would be able to pass the bar with such little work. Glad you guys dug the aesthetic! I'm a little embarrassed to be complimented on the drum writing though. Like I mentioned (but should've perhaps emphasized more), they're stock Renoise drum breaks; I did splice them up a little and layer them here and there but can't claim I really wrote the parts.. I usually spend an eternity writing the drum parts so it was a very efficient shortcut in my case. edit: oh and yay first ReMix for a system!
