Things in games that surprised/scared/dazzled you
Gario replied to lazygecko's topic in General Discussion
I was simply amazed that Capcom had the balls to end a series. The day I beat MMZ4 I grew quite a bit of respect for that company. I can't say I saw it as a culmination of everything Megaman, but I did see it as a very satisfying ending to the MMX/MMZ series. -
Mega Man X: The Grand Maverick Remix Battle 2010
Gario replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
Man, this is insane... I want to hear what everyone is doing for the Zero bracket after listening to the X round, but we all have to wait until this weekend, don't we? My track is coming along great, by the way - mixing two sources together is one of my favorite things to do, and getting something like Crowang mixed into a 13/8:3/4:4/4 format is really fun to do. ... Damnit, I wish I could hear Sixto's version, now - I'm really friggin' curious how he's doin'. The anticipation is killing me. -
I'm sorry, but watching that I couldn't even think about the music. All I could think was 'Holy shit, that referee is better than the players!' (I started watching it at 0:35)... Neat song, though.

OCR02117 - DDRMAX Dance Dance Revolution "Insomniac Skies"
Gario replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Ooooo, another Amy track, woot . Not to mention your first solo debut - I was waitin' for it, since from what I've heard from you there's certainly arranging talent that people have been missing out on 'til now. I don't know the source, so... well, can't comment on that, can I? Nice drum machine . It works, though, so it's no complaint. The synths and acoustics blend real well, here, so that makes me a happy listener. Neat textures, and they allow for room for your voice (as they should). The vocal work is great in it. Personally, I'm for less American 'R', but meh, to each their own. In a solo track they're not necessarily bad, they just color the vocal track differently. The 'duets' are awesome. I WILL note that some of the harmonizations sound slightly funny, to me, but that's because I'm a counterpoint freak, and I hear some combinations that break the flow a bit . I'm going to get it out, because I can't really help it - in duets, using fifths in sequence is bad for the flow of music. Most people pay little attention to it, but you'll find if you replace them with other intervals the duets tend to sound more interesting, and interesting generally means better, in this case. Now I wait for Rozo or Willrock to come in here and bash me for mentioning this... The violin playing was an excellent touch - I didn't know you played the violin. Very nice. Overall, neat mix. The combination of live and synth and vocals work well, here. Here's to another mix from you soon! *raises a glass of wine towards you, wherever you are* -

You sound like you had some awesome parents growing up. -
Well, LT's rule of thumb is if it's over 50% and under 80% it's alright, I think, so if it comes down to it you should be alright.

Wow, that Sega game makes it sounds like Japan supported Hitler during WW2. Speaking of picking through random roms, I pulled up a game called 'Bad Omen' for the Sega, since my younger siblings were working on a game with the same title ages ago. I opened it up, and the title screen was quite promising - a pretty good soundtrack with a classy fantasy backdrop. It looked like it was going to be a pretty decent platformer... until the play screen opened up an Arknoid clone that was a bit messy in it's design. I let out an inconspicuous 'What the fucking hell?' when I saw that. Ages ago, my oldest brother, for shits and gigs, decided to name his file 'POOP' in Zelda II (this is when it first came out, so we were around 9 and 4, and yes we were immature at that age). To our surprise, the file started us out with every spell and max upgrades (8-life, 8-magic, 8-attack). There was a catch, though - if you got hit a single time, you died instantly. We were crapping our pants, there, and it didn't change when we took the game out, either. Unfortunately one of us eventually erased this anomaly, and while we tried to get it up again using the same name it just didn't work the same. Ah, bless the days of random game wack-outs. -
You may not be sure of the buildup, but I am - it's fucking sweet. Alright, I can hear what you mean with the whole 'Daft-Punk' influenced thing... do you actually mean 'I-totally-stole-some-of-Daft-Punk's-traditional-textures-and-hope-that-no-one-cares-because-textures-are-totally-public-domain'? Nothing wrong with that, but daaaamn, some of those are almost exactly like Daft Punk's textures, lol. The production on this one is pretty sweet, bro. The sound is really excellent (so you've certainly gotten over the lo-fi samples issue with this track, in comparison with the other WIPs you've posted here). Unfortunately, there is one problem that I hear in this track, when it comes to getting accepted on OCR - it's arguably too liberal. Listening to it a second time, though, I think it might be passable, in that regard, but it's really a close case, here. Bring this to either a J's attention or get this up for mod review. The only other problem with this is that I feel it's cut a bit short at 3:26 - I want moar naow. Gimme moar naow. No, really, this is some really sweet electronica going up, here.

He's saying that if the song is cover-ish then the bar will be set to a much higher standard than normal. I'm going to say that if the song is cover-ish the bar isn't set high at all - it just becomes impossible to get it through because of site policy. -
I'm sure the tracks that are from the MMZ series are bonus. Also, I'm not surprised at the size of this thing. I mean really - you make an album dedicated to the ENTIRE MMX SERIES, then allow for repeats. That's just the way it was going to roll out.

Wow, this is the second time I've been summoned by you. I'm flattered . Those first few seconds really drew me in - very sweet vocal clips, there. That cello in the middle is also pretty damn sweet, along with that laugh (but I'm a sucker for sound clips, so don't take that to heart, lol). The rest of it, though... Well, turning it down via my speakers isn't going to do the trick, because the volume level is causing all sorts of clipping throughout the track (especially with the bass drum - that could even be heavily sidechained, in which case I'd suggest toning that down quite a bit, since this isn't really the proper genre for that sort of sidechaining). It just seems to me that there is too much going on at any one time - that crazy synth, orchestra, guitar, drums - so there just isn't any room for anything else to fit (especially in the mid-range of the EQ). This song would benefit greatly from the 'scissors' treatment; you really need to cut textures out of the song and place them strategically. I can't help you with the specifics, but when cutting keep this in mind - changes in textures means changes in the feel of the section. Take advantage of this and use the changing textures to change up the music when it feels like it's droning through (which it sometimes sounds like it does, as it is now). This will take some experimenting, though, so don't be afraid to save what you have on a separate file. Good ideas, but too much for me to take in, right now. Clean it up both using the volumes and cutting tracks out. Best of luck with it. -
*breaks out the coffee* Bring it on.

I discovered the site while hunting for sites that dedicated themselves to remixing videogame music in 2005 (no joke). However, the very first track I ever heard from this site was Zelda by System of a Down (... fucking Napster...), followed shortly by Djp's Bubble Bobble remix. Loved them both, but didn't find out where they came from until 2005.

OCR01994 - Final Fantasy IV "Lacrima"
Gario replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Well, shucks - I thought I reviewed this one. Ah well, better late than never, eh? Well, you have a great grasp of the main theme in this one, which make me happy . I always was amazed how FFIV integrated the main theme into nearly every track so seemlessly, and it really shows in this track... perhaps a little too much so to call it a 'Cry in Sorrow' remix, but hey, it's still sweet. Not much you can do there, though - you unintentionally turned it into a FFIV main melody remix by changing the harmonies around a little bit, lol. It has your signature clean electronica sound to it, which the world needs more of, so I'm happy this is here. If people need something to chill to, this track will certainly do the trick. -
Happy birthday, bro. Surprised no one has gotten to this yet . Keep bein' a-maze-ing (OH oh, see what I did there?!).

I totally missed this yesterday. For shame. Now I have to review one of your remixes, to make up for it (since I know that's what you want). Happy birthday.

Really? Point that one out to me (circa post-1000), since I haven't caught one that's midi-rip, yet. Well, pretty much what everyone else has said on this - great cover of this track. The production value is very high (so you did a really good job on the 're-mastering' part) and the performance is tight. From time to time I think I hear a note or two that just don't agree with the rest of it, but I think that's just personal taste, here. It sounds very well done, so I think you've accomplished what you said you set out to do - make an old track sound amazing using your fresh production skills on it. You never said you wanted it on OCR, so I don't really see why everyone's getting all in arms over the subject . If you did want to submit it, you'd pretty much need to start from scratch (since this is a recorded performance), so I'd forget about that idea (unless you want to re-perform the track, which is basically like starting a new remix). I'd love to see this put up on R:TS as it is, though, if you've got the time. Sounds great, I'm keeping it for myself now . -
I second Dyne - I certainly see a great shredded Crawfish sandwich coming from this guy.

No one, eh? I'll finish FFV off, then, and get started on the other FF titles. Just the FYI. Final Fantasy V Reminiscence 6/8 http://ocremix.org/song/11096 Final Fantasy V Home, Sweet Home 3/4 http://ocremix.org/song/1072 Final Fantasy V Music Box 3/4 (I don't know how OCR labels this song) Final Fantasy V The Castle of Dawn 12/8 http://ocremix.org/song/11106 Final Fantasy V Beyond the Deep Blue Sea 3/4 http://ocremix.org/song/11065 Final Fantasy V Legend of the Deep Forest 6/8 http://ocremix.org/song/11079 Final Fantasy V Tycoon Waltz 3/4 http://ocremix.org/song/11116 Final Fantasy V In Search of Light 12/8 (I don't know how OCR labels this song) That should about cover FFV (all the other tracks are in 4/4 or the equivalents), so I won't list them here.

Mega Man X: The Grand Maverick Remix Battle 2010
Gario replied to DarkeSword's topic in Competitions
Gah, this is like Russian Roulette, and I got the bullet in the chamber - no one wants to compete against Sixto this early into the matchups. Now that I think about it, though, I don't think anyone wanted to get me, either, 'cause of my funky source, lol. Time to partaaaay! -

Darkesword (or any other mod who can do this), could you move this to an appropriate forum and help me give it an appropriate title? Thanks a lot. Hey, OCR! Djpretzel has offered to incorporate a tracking system that is based on the meter of any source currently referenced on OCR some time in the future. (Originally from this thread) Level 99 and I have offered to help give him the information that he needs to complete this as soon as possible, but considering how much music will need to be analysed we're going to need all the help we can get. Level 99 is keeping a document that will organize all of the sources that we've analyzed up to date and I've volunteered to go through all the sources that I can and give him the information that he needs (as well as review what's on there, if I can) but because of the magnitude of the project we're requesting anyone who can to post information on the meter of a source to post it in this thread. The more sources you can post, the better, but the focus is sources that are already posted on OCR. Sources that are in games that have remixed music should also take priority, so it would be nice to provide information on games in this list before we venture beyond that. If you want to help us out, great! To make things easier and cleaner, please read below first so you understand the standard we're using to label the music. When labeling odd meters, look at the numerator - If it's five or less, the denominator will be '4'. If it's twelve or less the denominator will be '8'. If it's nineteen or less then the denominator will be '16'. Anything higher will use the denominator '32'. This will prevent similar meters like '5/8', '7/4' or '10/16' from muddling the future tagging system - the fewer signatures Djpretzel needs to deal with, the better. For songs that use common meters with odd subdivisions please add the subdivisions together and use that as the numerator (for example, Final Fantasy 8's ' ' track would be considered 12/8, not 3+3+2+2+2/8 ). This probably won't be a problem, but for those that use the latter method, use the former instead. While the other method is more accurate, it's simply too much to ask Djpretzel to tag for any possible number of combinations. If the meter is in common meter, cut meter, 2/2, 2/4, 4/4 or 8/8 it isn't necessary to provide the information, for now, since it will be assumed a track is in either of these meters if the information isn't provided on it. Because there are a lot of songs in common time, and because the differences between these time signature are almost nominal it would be needlessly excessive to provide these in here. Because 4/4 will not be tracked, though, 3/4, 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 will be necessary to post here, despite them being common signatures (and odd signatures will, obviously, be necessary, as well). If multiple signatures occur in the track and it's three meter changes or less, type 'Mixed Meter' in this section and provide in parentheses the meters used, in chronological order. If more than three meters are used simply type 'Mixed Meter' without typing the meters used. When posting, provide the information in this format. *Game Name *Song Name *Time Signature *Link to Source *Link to OCR Remixes If listing more than one source, simply repeat this for each source and separate each group with a space in the same post (in other words, don't multi post for multiple sources, please). Game Name: The name of the game the source is featured. If the music is featured in multiple games (e.g. Bubble Crab from MMX2 and Tidal Whale from MMX5) then list the games in chronological order of appearance. Song Name: Either the traditional name of the track ('Dancing Mad 3' from Final Fantasy VI) or the occurrence of the track in the game in question ('Crystal Snail Theme' from Megaman X2). Time Signature: The meter that the source is in. Link to Source: A YT link is preffered. Link to OCR Remixes: Provide a link to the OCR song page that provides the OCR remixes, if available (for example, if the source is Mario Overworld theme then the OCR link would be this). Over time I'm sure there will be refinements in this thread, so keep an eye out for updates on this post. I'll post the spreadsheet that Level 99 is working on soon, so people don't repeat themselves in this thread too much.

I can see why you cut the drums a bit short - they just bleed into each other, when they're there. For the style, you really need to bring them to the front much better, and they really need to sound crisp. If everything else is dirty that'd be fine (in fact, it'd probably sound pretty neat), but those drums need to come out big time. The beginning sounds pretty neat with the highs/highmids + lows cut out, but the sound needs to fill out much quicker than it does. The listener gets tired of being in that range for such a long time (a.k.a. nearly the whole song). I like the textures, and if you didn't have so many instruments with the highs/lows cut it'd fill out great. As it is, though, the soundscape just isn't filling up at all. The structure is lacking, in terms of OCR standards - it just follows the original too much to be accepted, here. There must be some interpretive rearranging of the original song and structure if you want to get this on OCR. EDIT: Sorry, that version of DJ Velly's track is an older version, so it isn't up to the par that he set for OCR. I forgot to mention that - hopefully Velly can forgive me I don't think you could know this, but this sounds very similar to what DJ Velly was working on about a year ago (which, by the looks of it, will be a posted remix soon), so as a strangely unfortunate coincidence you have that working against you, as well. The J's at OCR will compare you against another remix of the same tune in a similar style and desire something that brings something else new to the table (I know, yours is 'Rave' and his is 'Dance', but they're still fairly similar, right now). Just keep in mind that there's something down the pikes that may poise a problem, if you want to be accepted. When you change around the structure keep this track in the back of your mind and try to do something different from it and you'll be good to go . You have great ideas going here, and it sounds like your production skills are enough to get this whipped into shape, but it's like you personally sabotaged your own work with the filters you've got going over it. I like it, though, and will keep an eye on it.

... Oh. Well shit, now I feel stupid. I think I should listen to your WIP updates more often - that was a match to the first WIP update Bahamut showed us on the forum. LET ME KNOW NEXT TIIIIIIME!!!1!
