Original 8-Bit Composers: How did they do it?
Gario replied to Elysianhero's topic in Music Composition & Production
Good mini-tut on recreating chiptunage, Gecko. The downtuning bit on the chorus is something I didn't know about, so that's one more tool in my arsenal. Some additional notes on that, if you really want to emulate the sounds of the NES and such. The good ol' NES was equip with the ability to play five channels, for most games - two variable channels that could play different ratios of saw/square waves, a channel that played a triangle wave, a 'noise' channel and a PCM channel (capable of converting SFX of up to... 8kbps, if I recall correctly). The square/saw waves allowed for a great deal of flexibility while the triangle channel doesn't allow for volume modulation nor timbre change. That's why NES composers often played tricks on the system in order to create depth in their sound - they didn't have the channels to spare to create harmony and such otherwise. Other systems had more to work with (SNES, for example, had 8 channels, and they used sampled sounds to produce their effects, not waves), so these things should be kept in mind when emulating older VG music. By the way, that's why I consider Silver Surfer to be the true apex of NES chiptune sorcery. The shit they did with that system... I mean, DA---------YUM. EDIT: If you want a more visual example of how to use three channels, take a look at this. -

I'm going to guess you want the OST's, right? Because if you wanted an arrangement album of some sort, DCK2 is pretty well covered in that area . Good luck on your search for your music. -

Mmm... we've still got today to finish up/fine-tune/start (I hope not, at this point), so let's make the final push here! I'll have my track in tonight, woot. Anyone else care to join me and submit their track (who haven't already)? -
Gack! Sorry, I have to sit this one out, fellas - I got too much on my plate, atm. Perhaps next compo. I will vote, though - here's hopin' for at least one more participant

Well holy piss. 'Tis a shame to see you leave... At least I can rain down my Christian terror upon PPR without any hitches, now (mwahahaha...). Nonetheless, you'll be missed around here. Be sure to pop in anytime.

I feel for you, bro. I don't want to look at my accounts, right now, and that's just six days dedicated to Vegas... Glad you made it back safe, though. -
The Newbie Introduction Thread: Come on in and say hello!
Gario replied to Mahaboo's topic in General Discussion
You probably won't get too much of a response in here, since this is more of an 'I'm new, check it out!' thread. Off the top of my head, Rozo just made a track that has jazz elements (No Hurry, No Escape), AmIEvil has some classic jazz, and Shnabubula is an excellent jazz artist when he's not making chiptunes. I'm positive there're more, but that's what comes to me off the top of my head. You can post something in Community if you want some more information on it. -

Gario replied to Random Hero's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Your final mix is under 8mbs, right? The final post you've got isn't under 8mbs, so if you didn't fix that then that's a technicality that'll throw you off the panel... Other than that, this is a really good orchestration. I suspect some of the mechanical feel is intentional, so neat effect, there. It sounds quite vicious and in your face. I love the Cave Story theme thrown in there periodically. Good luck with the J's -
Well thank you very much for your sentiments . I thought so too, but... well, not quite. No worries, though - it helps me understand what's acceptable and whats not. Perhaps remix.thasauce.net has some more stuff that you're looking for? Olremix.org is an alternative site, as well. Newgrounds has some gems periodically, too - there are more sites than here that host talented musicians. It's not OCR's business to go out 'recruiting' people onto the site if they feel they're good enough (whatever that means to them), so don't expect something like that to happen any time soon. You can send a personal invitation to Rusko, though - you never know, linking him to this site (or this thread, even) might be enough for him to share what he has with us here on OCR, as he seems to be a talented young person. It's worth a shot - he'd be welcome here, I'm sure.
-
Thanks for clearing that up, Emunator (I missed that part ). So are you with Rusko, then, or are you simply curious about whether or not the track would be acceptable? If you're with him you can let him know our thoughts, I guess, but if not then the answer is simply no, that song would probably be rejected as it is, for the arrangement reasons I stated earlier. If he's around, though, he's welcome to come around here, too .

It's not bad at all, bro. It does sound pretty close to OCR standards, really. The EQ on it is a bit odd, especially for dubstep... or at least for the little dubstep that I've heard on this site. I'm going to shoot from the hip and say this really needs more bass & lower mids and less highs, here. Perhaps it's an artifact from Youtube, though - a direct link to the mp3 would be the preferable method of upload (*hint hint*). The arrangement is pretty liberal - in fact too much so. I can hear the source quite clearly, but it's used in such a way that it might not be counted as 'source'. Up to 0:54, it's pretty clear, but after that the theme is contracted in such a way that it's hard to associate it to the source. I hear what you did, but I don't think it'll pass due to the liberal nature of it all. I'm talking from experience, here - my own track was rejected because it treated the source in a very similar manner. Yes, the source is all over the place, but it's cut up and rearranged in such a manner that it doesn't sound like the source anymore. Interesting arrangement, and I believe you can make a couple of changes to make it closer to the source, but as it stands it won't quite make it on the site. Just take a little time on it and focus it more on making it OCR and you'll do just fine. Nice track

I guess it's time to break a fast. I made it through a fast I had no plans on taking, lol. Didn't take anything, but now I'm gonna get some delicious food. Mmm... delicious food.

Mmm... it's still pretty bright for me. I'm not even thinking about it, though - eating pre-morning breakfast makes it quite bearable. I think I'm on the same clock as SoulinEther, so... yeah. Got a little bit to go.

Compliment or critique taken (whichever it was, I'm... not sure). I troll'd you a minute ago, so I'll make it up a little bit and give you some advice. I'm not familiar with the source, so I can't say whether or not it's conservative/liberal/whatever, but I think the arrangement is neat, atm (even if it's short). I'd need the source to clarify whether it's OCR-able or not. It feels more like an intro to something longer, though, with the guitar really blasting like that towards the end, there - we need more sections to this track really embellishing what you can do on that guitar. The mixing is amateur (which is why you're asking about it, I'm sure). There just doesn't seem to be enough room for the guitar to shine past the drums & rhythm guitar. You're going to need to mix some of the elements into the background and/or make use of the panning so it isn't quite as centered (I hear some panning, but with the rhythm guitars there could be more). The master track has an extremely high EQ, atm. Lower the highs a bit along with the mid-highs. That'll take out the 'fuzz' that's taking up the entire top layer, atm. The synths are abrasive. Use some synths that mesh with your soundscape better - softer is better, in this case, especially since you bring in the guitar later (thus really allowing for a neat contrast). The attack on the synth around 2/3 into the track is far too high. Tighten up the attack so the note entries are cleaner. It's really a cool track that I encourage people to listen to. It needs some real cleaning up/arranging before it's an OCR piece, though. -
Hmm... I haven't fasted in a while, so I'll join in today. I just so happen to have been up before daybreak, and so happened to have eaten before daybreak, so why not, at this point? Christians are supposed to fast throughout Lent, btw, for people who don't think they do (I'mma lookin' at you, Kanthos )... For those that don't, shame on you - it's really the least you can do, during that time. Alrighty! Ready, set, FAST! EDIT: Cripes, not even water, eh? I'm still doin' it, but I'm glad I checked - almost got knocked out of the running a few minutes ago, lol.

I've started something for this in Vegas, and I'll work on it 'til it's finished (preferably before the deadline). I know you'd castrate me if I didn't finish this now, Rama, so I better make you proud . Thanks for the extension, btw, and I'm glad to hear about your work (even though it cost you the trip + chance to meet you). -

Wow... I'm in very few of those shots (even on the Facebook page ). I guess I'm just too much sexiness for one camera . Gah, it's back to reality now, so I've got to brace myself for the week I missed at work and such (as well as the money I lost, argh). The meetup was worth it, though
