OCR01959 - Radical Dreamers "Thrash's Snakebone Pit"

An updated track from Thieves of Fate? Cool! I'm down. I like how this was described as a super spy version; it really feels like a Guitar Hero meets Bond influence is going on here. Plus the textures throughout this mix are amazing, almost physically tangible. This was a pretty fun to listen to, and I'm really glad OA was able to go back and spruce this one up. Truly an astounding mix. -
o_O O_o This is like ... the mental equivalent of shifting without a clutch. Whilst one is still attempting to mentally wrestle with the intro they just heard, they are blasted by a mellow nicely grooving Crashman mix. I completely agree with the preceding statement. P.s. Nice utilization of the Amen Break.

OCR00589 - Xenogears "Koiji na Shi no Genchou"

This does feel pretty empty. Even though it was going for the industrial vibe, industrial styled mixes aren't completely devoid of human touches. Everything here feels like it was cranked out with cold precision by a music notation machine and compiled together for the most part. I'd just recommend passing this one up. -
OCR01443 - Mega Man 7 "Bombin' Shade of Blue"

This is a really groovin' piece, and I like it a lot. A lot of what makes this interesting to listen to is how the mood and, to some extent, the texture changes from section to section, especially the Ghosts and Goblins inspired sections. Plus the intro and ending makes this piece feel like an actual run through a Mega Man level. Also is the ending a Mario allusion or am I just imagining things? -
I'm really digging that percussion; it seems vaguely out of place yet just so right. lol This has a really unique hollow feel to it, which really doesn't detract from it but rather adds to the personality of this mix. Really, this song has a lot of textural value both to the ears and almost tangibly so. While it feels deceptively simple, it is an amazing song to listen to.

I'll admit the intro is a little creepy especially with the initial vocal sample and the darkly moody intro. While the transition to the main meat of the mix was smooth and nice, meh... This mix can't really come to any resolution with itself, imo. Each piece is distinctive with it's own little flair. Intro is dark and moody, transition is hopeful, the next piece is feels like a cover of the melody, after the two and a half minute mark it feels mellowed out and purposeful. While I can't complain that it isn't an interesting listen, it just feels too piecemeal for me. By no means is it terrible, it's just "meh" I will agree that the intro was the most interesting part of this mix though.

OCR01522 - Mega Man X "Light in the Fortress"

I really like the intro on this one; it feels misty and dire like one is walking up to the castle/fortress and then Blam! the castle theme. The mix balances direness without being overly dramatic and has a nice deliberate pacing. I also like the lead guitar, highly rocking, and would recommend checking this one out. -
"Speed of Techno" is a phrase that comes to mind. >.< oh wow, I'm sorry but I think if I listened to this too much I might get a headache; that beat is just waaaaaaaaaaaaay to pounding. I mean I can feel it in my sinuses. Also this sticks pretty close to the melody making this mix feels incredibly narrow and stuffy. Sorry I don't really recommend this.

Hands down, this is one of the best, if not the best, songs on the site, imho. The lyrics are pure inspirational genius; I love that mental imagery of that fire/ice dichotomy. It's So Freaking Good. Everything here is so beautiful and flawless, the vocals, that guitar, oh my. I love this song sooooo much to the point that it's not really funny. Pretty much the bottom line is this: Download this NOW! -
OCR01770 - Super Metroid "Samus Bubblebath"

Wow, this has a really New Age vibe to it all. The melody feels so woven in between the bass, and it feels so chunkily experimental while feeling so Metroid. It vaguely reminds me of Vince Guaraldi. I really like this mix, it's so unique that I don't think one could really find anything else like it. 'Tis very well done. -
OCR00629 - Mega Man 2 "Project X2 - Crash Man"

I don't think the album from whence this was cut was like its other a continuous flow of music, so abrupt stops aren't quite as forgivable. Overall its not too bad, but simplistic and short. Still, I like the attempted feel going on here, like a record being played, hence the grain and scratching at the end. I do recommend checking this out and the rest of the album. -
OCR00246 - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "LatinSphere"

Mmm... Lite Latin Groove. It's a little dated so it sticks a little close to the source, but this at times breaks out into some funky little ditties with the piano and the flute. In the end, it doesn't feel too fancy or extravagant, but it's a really nicely done and wrapped up packaged of a mix that all should at least check out. -
OCR00330 - Radical Dreamers "Northern Promise"

As for the Far Promise flood mixes that I've listened to, and off the top of my head, this is probably my favorite. It has this really cool war torn march to it, something to march home to, something to be proud of. Sure, it's all mostly changed context around a mostly unchanged melody, but I like it because it really shows how even a minor change when implemented diligently can drastically alter the mood of a piece. -
This really shows its age; it's more focused on stylistic rather than arrangement variations. As such, it does have a dark, damp, distant, cavernous, foreboding vibe to it. Ultimately, this (and pretty much all the other Far Promise wave from way back when) are all nice little showcases for the theme but when compared to modern day remixes just feel average and simplistic. They're in no way bad, but there's just better stuff out there nowadays.

Dang, around the two minute mark reminds me of something, and I can't think of what, some old NES game probably. Still this is freaking rocking out. Very tense and darkly determined. In the end, it doesn't feel to complicated but it's still a cool mix worth checking out. Good question

OCR00325 - Radical Dreamers "Industrial Promise"
42 replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Just like it says on the tin: Industrial and Far Promise. And I can't really fault it for that. This is by far the strangest thing I've heard in a while, not to mention the strangest arrangement of Far Promise I've heard. Actually, arrangement is probably the wrong word because I agree with previous sentiments about lacking of arrangement making this more or less a industrial techno cover of Far Promise. While I do like the uniqueness of it and its truth in advertising, those are about its only merits. -
OCR00332 - Radical Dreamers "The Furthest Promise"

I've always loved the source; its just so sweet/bitter/nostalgic.... As for the mix itself, it's not bad. Although, it actually sticks annoyingly close to the melody making this feeling cover-ish, imo. As for the length, if it had been a little more expansive with the arrangement it definitely would have to be longer, but, ironically, since it doesn't, the length feels strangely appropriate. -
Oh wow. This actually reminds me of the old Pink Panther cartoons in more ways than one, lol. Especially that cool, slick, debonair attitude of PP himself. Very Henry Mancini but with a slightly darker [that is bluer] and more experimental edge to it. Even though this is probably dated, it's still an interesting listen. Just why is it so short though!? >.<
-
Wow, there is an incredibly Huge contrast of sounds here. What and all with the bass and percussion. It reminds me of the conversation from Encounters of the Third Kind mixed with a level from Battletoads from the NES. Also, the melody buried so deep in there its not even really that funny. Over all I rate it a solid "meh"
-
It has the same beat feel and energy as the Amen Break. Huh.... It all feels like light, dancy, very narrow, minimal techo. Still it's highly melody driven, which is a good thing. Meh... It's by no means bad, but it's just feels simplistic and pretty average.

OCR00054 - Metroid "efsisos featuring Samus Aran"
42 replied to Joe Redifer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Thirded that this is definitely an OCR Classic. Everything here feels especially deliberate, well paced, and well placed. Carefully constructed like some lost ruin. This conveys a lot of the dire purposeful mood found in Metroid games without a sense of cavernous loneliness. I really like this piece, and its a good find. -
OCR01079 - Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker "Ancient Hero"
42 replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Mein Gott! That is.. Wow... Words... they fail me. My mind is blown. One of the most amazing things in quite a while. Aside from the fact that I will forever have WindWaker and Team Fortress 2 forever linked in my mind, this is an amazing piece; its so melody driven. It definitely feels like the theme to some ancient forgotten lore, highly grandiose, equal parts orchestral and medieval, with a great sense of destiny. This is a really beautiful piece. p.s. Bonk! :3 -
That made me lol because it's so true. This has a certain slightly emotionally bittersweet pained aspect to it, like the Phantom of the Opera or Davey Jones at an organ except it's Cutman at a piano. I can also see this being a ballad almost. Definitely one of my favorite piano arrangements
