  1. Ah short and so sweet... This reminds me so much of one of those old timey ragtime player pianos. Normally I'd complain about how short a mix like this is, but it just works as it is. It's so tightly encapsulated that to draw it out would ruin it. My only objection is the ending; it's too abrupt. Wham! and it's over... Still this is a great little mix and worth checking out.
  2. This reminds me of like some early Eighties techno anthem. The energy within this track is amazing. This is also fun to listen to. Dynamics, tempo, and style are all changing on the fly; there's never a dull moment in this track. Also I think I keep hearing the Amen Break somewhere in here, am I right? Definitely a hidden gem that no one should miss.
  3. I like this a lot; it's mellow and very distinct. I can almost see this happening at a spontaneous jam session, someone starts plucking a few notes and the rest just follows. This has a quiet minimalist aspect, which, aurally, makes this interesting to listen to; it really highlights the instruments and arrangement.
  4. I like the intro, like its a radio fading in. Still for the longest, it felt to me like it was like a very "narrow" mix. It feels like its constantly building up for some grand finale but never quite gets there. It's good, I like it, but it just doesn't do a lot to leave a lasting impression on me. Really the only thing aurally interesting here is the tempo changes, nothing much else...
  5. This reminds me of something from Toonami, the focus on those dark subtle beats, the slight downplay of the main melody. On the flip side, I feel the melody is buried too deeply here and greatly overshadowed by the bass. It's got that deep space groove going on but it doesn't scream "Kirby" to me. It's a good song in its own right, and I like it, but I just can't quite connect it with Kirby.
  6. The intro reminds me so much of Tetris; I can almost see Tetris bricks as a watermark behind a screenshot of Kirby: Canvas Curse. I like how there's basically two halves to this mix, a chiptuneish layer and its nonchiptune counterpart running parallel, with the melody caught somewhere in between; it makes this mix feel very braided together. Aurally, there's a lot going on here; the melody is distinct and weaving it in and out of its counterparts makes it fun to listen to.
  7. One can seriously loose themselves in this mix. This reminds me of Reese's Peanut Butter cups. You got your Kirby in my Chopin, you got your Chopin in my Kirby. It retains all the bubbliness of Kirby but with an extra layer of that fancifulness of classical music. I like this piece because it seems to just go places; the dynamics make this incredibly fun to listen to. One can just feel the emotion and fun went into this performance.
  8. I bought The Secret of Monkey Island: SE recently, so now I'm quasi-familiar with this source tune now. This mix definitely goes on my short, but ever growing, "Should-Have-Been" List, mixes that in their own way transcends the source and essentially are what the source should have been. Having listening to this mix first, I actually found the source lacking. Sure, it sticks as close to the source as fleas on a dog and there's not that many dramatic embellishments. But I feel all of this is just appropriate. My only other complaint is that it's too short.
  9. Bluntly, this mix frightens me on many, many levels. Every time I listen to this, I have to stop and follow along with the lyrics. This feels so authentically Middle Eastern; I kinda wish we'd see more ethnically inspired mixes. I like how DjP described this: "worlds unto themselves" Admittedly, I've always liked the image Dazil, City of Burning Sands, has invoked, but this mix takes it and goes crazy with it. It reminds me a lot of Greek mythology describing how petty and jealous gods can be (although I do have some objections of using Biblical versus to paint this picture though).
  10. I've heard of industrial metal, but this is, like, industrial jazz. It has this ethereal hazy quality to it, sort of like... I keep getting this mental image of fog at an abandoned industrial park and you can tell that a living presence is somewhere in there, but you can't find them. I would imagine this is the sort of background music that would play in areas of L4D if the players weren't around to hear it. The atmosphere is so wonderfully thick in this track; without a doubt, this is my favorite track from Humans + Gears.
  11. I like this song; it just feels like it was recorded out in some barren Arctic landscape. And the beats have this tribal feel that I adore. Still all of this pales in comparison to Jill's sheer brilliant vocal work. Lyrically, this reminds me to a degree of Cher's Believe. O.k., well, they're practically polar opposites, but still... Believe is all about being strong enough to conquer being unlucky in love, Journey's End is a heartfelt plea of desperation. Still they provide an interesting contrast.
  12. After about the first twent seconds, I expected . Needless to say, this reminds me of a classic cartoon's epic theme. The orchestration lends itself to the source well, but I feel it gets repetitive at times. It's a great arrangement, I like it, but six minutes was probably a little long for its purposes, making it feel drawn out.
  13. I really like how you described it that way. I can almost imagine this being played at a Spa or something like that. This really does have not just a tranquil effect on the mind, but a re-energizing effect too. It has its own way of saying "Don't worry; all is well. Life hasn't ended yet." It reminds me of sayings like "Hakuna Matata" and "Ob-la-di Ob-la-da" all distilled into a song and really mellowed out.
  14. I actually did this last year and kept my review log going for a few months afterwards. It feels good to break that out again.
  15. Oh, this waltz is so beautiful. Something about this mix seems a little off, like the sound was muted/dampened just a hair. I don't think it detracts from the mix though; on the contrary, I think it really adds to it. The mood here is fueled by nostalgia, not saddeningly so, but in a "the good times have come and I'm glad I was part of them" sense, and I think this mix is highly appropriate for its setting. It does its job well. When I listen to this, I feel as if I have to slow down and smell the roses; it just wouldn't feel right when listening to this mix to do otherwise.
  16. I like the intro; it lets you know you that its definitely Castlevania that you're listening to, and it's highly reminiscent of Schroeder from Peanuts playing his toy piano as an organ. Also, I can here the Bossa Nova influences in here. I can't quite imagine this being played live, but it's got a wonderful groove. SotD is a wonderful jazz album and this is probably my favorite piece from it.
  17. I love this mix with a passion. Especially that "I'm falling back to where I used to be" part. This is an beautiful mix that I didn't know about until a few months ago and seriously wish I had known about this sooner. Guitar Intro = Pure Awesomeness. A lot of people have criticized the vocals here, but I think they're fine and perfectly suited for this mix. I've never claimed to have a musically trained ear, but it's evident that he had a lot of fun while making this, which I feel makes up for any critiques of style. I will admit that the ending is lacking in closure though; it just sort of dribbles off... Still, you definitely should be listening to this. Don't let it slip by.
  18. I admit that I like this, but it comes off as a bit too stiff necked and mechanical. Also it seems to be a little conservative with arranging the themes. I mean the Castlevania themes aren't ingrained into my consciousness like, say, Mario's or Zelda's but since it's going for that rock/metal vibe, I feel some of the melodies and themes here could be more embelished. I also like those whip cracks; they add an extra layer of immersion that just drags one in. Still this is a great mix and worth checking out.
  19. I like how this mix is drawn out and is constantly building up. Everything feels so deliberate, nothing gone to waste or misused. While this mix is fancifully atmospheric, it isn't passive like other ambient tracks, and I like that in this mix.
  20. Gosh, has it been a year already? wow... I'm just a forumite who comes and and goes with the winds, but I helped out reviewing last year and it was amazing. There's no telling how many hidden gems I tripped over and wouldn't have found otherwise. I'm not much in the know of the technical side of music production, but I can discuss what I like/dislike about each mix. Needless to say, I'm stoked about this reviewing season.
  21. This brings back so much nostalgia; I love it. I so want to dig through my gameboy cartridges now.
  22. I approve of this and have been waiting a long time for the Sonic the Hedgehog remix venture to come along. I wish you all best of luck. Edit: I'm no remixer or web page designer, but I'd still like to try and assist in whatever way possible...
  23. Hallelujah! I've been waiting for this mix for a long while. And it is well worth the wait.
  24. I Agree 110% Cut this reality junk and Bring Back Toonami! That is all.
