Potential OCR Meetup: Six Flags America (MD/DC/VA)
djpretzel replied to Arrow's topic in General Discussion
Assuming the dates do NOT coincide with our honeymoon, I wanna ride me some roller coasters. Generally speaking, later in August the better for me. -

Has anyone tried the Typhoon Sounds Kontakt Set?
djpretzel replied to Meteo Xavier's topic in Music Composition & Production
As someone who has played a real Motif/Fantom AND listened to these "libraries"... not even close. Not by a long shot. It shouldn't be technically impossible, but the reason romplers sound so good is because each program - small though they may be, relative to 1GB+ Kontakt instruments - has been tweaked, tailored, and optimized out the ass to sound great on THAT specific hardware. Colossus is good, Sampletank is good, but I don't know of one single general purpose software sample library that really matches a Motif or Fantom, or my Kurzweil PC3 for that matter, in terms of a broad variety of usable sounds. -

April is Support OCR Month 2010!
djpretzel replied to big giant circles's topic in General Discussion
That was a ridiculous experience, and was singlehandedly responsible for me moving OCR's fundages into an ING account and only keeping the bare minimum in my PayPal account. They shut it down because awarding prizes randomly was a "lottery" in their opinion. That part I could understand, I guess, but buy me a beer some time and I'll tell you the hell of getting our account reactivated. Short version? Due to the limitations of their system and some ridiculous policy regarding "file-sharing services", of which we apparently fall under, I ended up having to take a SCREENSHOT of a notepad document and upload a BMP file into their crappy attachment system. What did it say? It said that we don't allow child porn, and would report offenses to the proper authorities. One of the worst customer service experiences of my life, don't use them for anything super-critical, and don't keep more than $500 in there, is my advice. In other, happier news, thanks for the donations & support thus far, everyone - we're off to a good start! -
Definitely great to see more C64 representation; arrangement does a great job of transplanting the genre. Brass gets a little blatty (inevitable) but I love that the brass parts crescendo - that more than makes up for it! Also nice panning/separation & surprise clarinet solo ending. Definitely digging it, easy YES

OCR02053 - *YES* Mega Man X5 'Moonlight Vibin''
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Would have liked a bit more evolution w/ the beat - it's good, but it stays fairly static throughout. Other elements are smoov all around, and while straightforward, the arrangement executed the genre well. YES -
What about other audio formats? (FLAC/OGG/M4A/etc)
djpretzel replied to lightkuragari's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Hmmm, where to begin. Let me just make an ideological point that bears making: open formats, and open technology, are both "good things". However, they are not the ONLY things, nor do they outweigh real-world considerations and practicality. Open format zealots usually have good intentions, but I hate to break it to you: the world is full of patents. Not all of them are bad, not all of them are evil, and some of them actually protect & inspire innovation, as opposed to curtailing it. But let me take another step back, re: MP3 specifically: the cat's out of the bag, the ship has sailed, and the fat lady has pretty much sung. Not in terms of MP3 being superior from a technical perspective - that's a whole different can of worms - but in terms of it being a format so widely-employed and easily accessible that it is, for all intents and purpose, "open". Maybe not on paper - although it's my understanding that it IS essentially open in terms of playing/decoding, just not encoding - but in practice. Practice makes all the difference in the world, as any site that focuses on fan arrangements of commercial game soundtracks can tell you... -

Based on feedback from our users we have unfortunately decided to discontinue the ReMixanator service, effective immediately. -
[April fools!] OverClocked ReMixanator Release!
djpretzel replied to Kenogu Labz's topic in General Discussion
Guys, some of the negative feedback is really discouraging. You may not like SOME of the auto-generated mixes ReMixanator produces, but there should really be enough variety & customization that you can make SOMETHING you enjoy. If you're not digging the beats you're generating, maybe it's time to look inward... Also, it's worth noting that today marks the start of "April is Support OCR Month". We used 90% of our funds, donations included, in coding ReMixanator, so we really need your assistance to get back on track. Yes, I coded the C++ core of the application myself, but some of the advanced DSP and ethnic instrumentation implementations were outsourced to India, where they utilized a lot of JavaScript and COBOL, and it chewed up a lot of resources. -
Advantages of Reason over FLStudio
djpretzel replied to DJ Unkn0wn3's topic in Music Composition & Production
Short version: Reason has a better, larger, more diverse library of usable factory sounds (still, though FL is improving in this arena) Fruity is actually MORE powerful, however, because at this point the ability to run plugins is crucial, and the propheads are simply being stubborn about keeping Reason entirely proprietary and self-contained I'd stick w/ FL; you can always host Reason via ReWire... -
