I agree with Justin that the way things were layered really contributed to how awesome it sounds. Nailed it bro! -
OCR02907 - Super Mario 64 "Through the Flames"

The horns in the intro were , but when I read that these were free samples, it confirmed my thought: Justin is freakin' awesome. Putting the OCR bar aside, to make free samples sound this amazing is so not easy. I'm gonna be that one guy and give you 120 stars out of 120 (unless you want to count the bonus stars). -
OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
timaeus222 replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Are we saying the whole string or just the number? I honestly can see both, so it may just be a browser problem (or not). You can move an object off the page for sure and it'll be as if it disappeared; it's possible, but the change in a string's positioning can't really 'conflict' with a browser's cache---it could be stuck on an old state, but not disappear "while it's moving" because I can't imagine how something could be stuck in between the change and the result. It really doesn't sound like what you meant at all. o.o; If the server-side cache didn't have time to update yet, it would be back at the old position, and you may just need to hold shift and press the refresh button on your browser to refresh the cache. If the whole thing is gone, then I can only imagine it being the case on Internet Explorer, which doesn't appear to be causing problems on my side. IE has really glitchy response to CSS positioning if that's what's being used (position: relative/absolute; right: X px; top: Y px;). Sometimes Firefox, Chrome, etc. have the proper positioning, but then when you check it on IE, it's way off; I've gotten that a few times when I was designing an old gaming website. Maybe the string's z-index is read as too low on certain system configs (That's a big stretch, because I can still click it)? If someone else gets it again, try pressing Ctrl+F and searching for "private messages:". See if it's even going to highlight that phrase. -
finished "The Saga Begins" a new film style song by me.
timaeus222 replied to MikeViper's topic in Post Your Original Music!
I agree about the drum samples. It's not exactly all about the bass in film scores, but here the bass is very loud, while all the strings and drums are buried. Also, the legato strings and brass are coming in too late on each note and need more humanization with automated volume swells. Try this as a reference. -
wip Enjoy the Silence electro hard cover. (w/ Vocals)
timaeus222 replied to Hazama's topic in Post Your Original Music!
The sounds used have lots of treble piled up in particular frequencies that happen to be rather grating. The EQ is pretty packed, but cool concept. You should try more of this. -
Happy Super Father's Day!

I'm not actually talking about the specificity of sounds, because that's just for the accuracy to which you convey your inspiration; you get inspired by an artist, and you might try recreating some of their sounds. That's not what I'm referring to. =p When I mean it is generally harder, I'm thinking of how it just so happens that the really thick bass sounds are almost always done with FM synthesis (and occasionally comb filters), and with FM, it's easy to bring in harsh/unfavorable frequencies accidentally (Rozovian could vouch for that), but at the same time, if done carefully, you can get very controlled low bass frequencies with some nice warmth. Not only that, but FM is so diverse that there's more than just a few bass timbres you can make with it (I made like 12 different FM basses following very similar steps at one point, and they all sounded distinctly different), so choosing one that fits well in context or fits your needs at the time may or may not be easy depending on how picky you are. Another way to put it is that it's almost like a puzzle game with over 1000 pieces that almost all fit into one spot. Sometimes it's hard to see that the same way I do because not everyone thinks similarly to me, and I get that it can be the case, but that's just how I see it.

I'm listening to V3. Sounds like it could be in a game, but it feels too set in one groove. It's almost like when Food Network judges taste food and they say it's "one-noted" (except it corresponds to texture, not dynamics). Let's just get this out of the way as well: there's a lotta soundfonts and FL default-like samples in here, so it'll need more work than usual if you're sticking with these. The tubular bells make sense to me, but I think they feel too quantized. The toms on the left sound like they are supposed to be congas or bongos, but are toms instead (FPC I believe?). The cymbal, to me, kinda sticks out since it's so acoustic. Maybe some more diffusion to the reverb can soften the tone and let it sit more in the mix. Scooping the frequency for the transient of the cymbal could help soften it as well. It's just at the frequency where the "4" EQ band is by default (right click + reset). 1:58 feels like some instruments changed key and some didn't. I think the strings didn't change key. A lot of stuff feels quantized by this point. Overall this is likable, but it settles into one groove and just sticks there the whole time, so the dynamics feel constant. Feels a lot like background music to me. Quantization is a major contributor here to the one-groove feel. Still not as bad as some of my first remixes were though. You definitely have cohesion in your instrument choices. Nothing's clipping, and everything is mixed audibly. -
finished Wily's Last Defence (Heavy Metal MM3 Wily Theme 2)
timaeus222 replied to Ianuarius's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
This is great! I would have liked to see more variation at 1:45 compared to 0:19 since the whole track is so short. Those two sections are almost the same aside from the drums and the later-change in the guitar. Maybe a little difference in the melody would help. Rhythm guitar tone could have more low mids on the chugs. The kick feels buried and the snare feels a little underwhelming. Other than that, I liked the arrangement. Also, Necris Omega: -
Hazama needs your help!!! --- mastering piano epic (Tetrinet)
timaeus222 replied to Hazama's topic in Recruit & Collaborate!
Seems like it's partially due to the reverb and partially due to how often you used the pedal (plus the EQ of course). Sometimes the low notes are fine, sometimes they're bleeding together, so if it was only a reverb and EQ issue, it wouldn't be happening at all. This sounds really cool otherwise. (Here, it's rather soaked in reverb so it's hard to tell whether it's live or MIDI.) I'd be happy to help; I mastered a solo piano piece recently (Silence of the Daylight remix). -

Term help: keywords for searching for orchestral genres
timaeus222 replied to swansdown's topic in General Discussion
With regards to the generally non-electronic music, at least for me, I learned it in a music appreciation college class. I have an excel file I made that reviewed the whole semester for my final. The ones from there that I recall to be orchestral are aria, ensemble, recitative, minuet (sometimes, such as Minuet in G), theme & variations, concerto, concerto grosso, trio sonata, sonata, minuet & trio, str. quartet, symphony, rondo, chamber music, program symphony, overture, concert overture, music drama (Wagner), tone poem, and incidental music (sometimes). -

timaeus222 replied to Bowlerhat's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Yeah, there's loads of clipping, and the phaser just doesn't work on the piano. There's no low end left, and it sounds like it's a mile underwater. -

It's not the point. It's only a heads-up in case someone was hoping for good default samples, so they won't be surprised. meustrus, FluidR3 is worth getting as a soundfont resource. Happens to have the best harp I've ever used. -
wip Pokemon RSE - Petalburg City remix
timaeus222 replied to JoePotato28's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I agree with Nostalvania. The dissonance doesn't sound intentional, at least after 2:42. The chord at 2:36 was fine. The other ones are like someone mashed some notes on the piano with the palm of their hand. Also, the TR-808/909 drums you're using fit more of an Electro or Hip Hop context. -
