Long time since I've posted something here... here it goes https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/93696675/despair.mp3 This was made for last month's DoD, ended up 6th which was pretty great considering that almost every song was damn awesome. The source is called "Battle with the Devil", from the game Tsugunai: Atonement, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda: I plan to submit this to OCR, and I'd like to get some feedback. Just for the record, I'll just say straight away that I know the lead is sloppy and I plan to re-record it, so no need to point that out

Hah, I expected this to be another solo cello song. The chiptune elements were nice, though the lead from 0:28 to 0:51 sounds a bit heavy on the high frequencies. The song itself feels pretty short even though it's 4 minutes long (that's a good thing, right? xD). Nice work from you as usual -

You stayed pretty close to the source, which is not a bad thing unless you're planning to submit this to the panel Like it's already been mentioned, the first lead is too quiet. You could try to bring it's volume up a bit and then do some EQ dips in the other instruments to make it stand out. I can't think of any more constructive comments unfortunately. Just gonna say that I liked this -

The arrangement is fine, but I'm not a big fan of your drum sounds and drum writing, though I admit I'm not an expert on the genre so I can't really tell you what to do about it. The mixing could be improved, but you won't get very far with a tracker. If you really don't like working with DAWs, you could export all your instrument tracks as wave files and import them in Audacity (despite what people say, it's a pretty good tool). Audacity has built-in support for VSTs (not VSTis), so you could do the processing there. -

Funny, I thought I left a comment on this, maybe I forgot to hit the "submit reply" button xD The lead guitar sounds like it has too much reverb compared to the other instruments, so try lowering it down a bit. The drums could be louder and the drum writing could be better. You need to add more transitions, right now the song feels pretty much on autopilot. Also, the song feels kinda empty but I can't really suggest what to add to fill the space. You need something more than just pad chords in the background. -

No mid means either the left or the right audio channel is phase-inverted. I guess you could use the fruity phase inverter plugin on your master track to listen to your tracks properly. Google suggests this might be a jack problem. Test it on some other audio devices, if there's still no mid, try replacing the jack (or the entire cord if your headphones have a detachable one). -

Using the same vibrato effect on both the left and right channel shouldn't cause any phase issues. Delay compensation makes up for the time needed to process the signal.

An alternative would be to route your audio to one mixer channel, then route that mixer channel to two more channels, and remove the routing to the master channel. After that, use something like Modern Splitter (http://vstplugs.blogspot.com/2011/02/modern-splitter-by-antress.html) to isolate the left audio channel on one and the right audio channel on the other mixer channel. You can then apply the mono vibrato to each of those channels.

I played all the main FFs except 11, 13 and 14, though I've only completed 7,8,10 and 12. I never completed the NES ones because, well, they're on the NES. Back when I was a kid I preferred games like Mario, Megaman and Contra... and as an adult I prefer games that are not NES games Now about the SNES ones... let me start by saying that I didn't have a SNES as a kid and the first SNES game I've played was Chrono Trigger four years ago on an emulator. I liked it so much that I decided to try playing several other rpgs on the SNES... and they all fall short in comparison, including the FFs. I understand that all SNES FFs were probably considered best games ever at the time they came out but like Wes said, they haven't aged as well as CT. I think the main reason for that is the plot. While I didn't find FF4/5/6 plots to be bad, they all start pretty slow, whereas CT really keeps the pace of the plot the same throughout the entire game. And today, when I play old rpgs like these, the plot is the main thing that can keep me interested. Graphics/gameplay/sound just aren't enough. As for the PS1 FFs, they had a good-enough mixture of graphics, music and plot to keep me interested. The only reason why I haven't completed FF9 is because my brother deleted the save file on my memory card which was some 5-6 hours in the game. But I still admit I did find FF9 weaker than FF7 and FF8. Also, while I think FF7 is a great game, I somehow liked FF8 more. I'm probably one of the 1% that thought draw/junction system was a nice addition. True, it could be tedious but it also gave you a choice - spending time to make battles a bit easier, or rushing through the game while being low on stats. Finally, the PS2 ones - FF10 was... I'm trying to find reasons to call it bad but I can't. Objectively, it's a damn good game. But I didn't like it. The music is not for my tastes, I hated the plot, the gameplay was too linear... One thing I liked was character differentiation, but once you leveled up enough that becomes obsolete. Nooow, FF12. It's my favorite FF. It had great graphics for the PS2 era. It had a plot that was easy to follow. The dialogue was great. All the characters except Vaan and Penelo were damn awesome and received some good development. The soundtrack, while not completely to my tastes, was pretty good. I loved the gambit system because I'm a lazy person. I'd rather let the computer play through areas where I can kill the enemies with ease rather than having to constantly mash one button like in every goddamn RPG ever. So to summarize, I don't really like old FFs. But I don't hate them. I just think FFs 1-6 haven't aged well, FF7 was somewhat confusing but still good, FF8 was good except for the pulling-plot-points-out-of-anus storyline, FF9 was decent but not as good as FF7/8, FF10 was objectively good but I just hate it, FF12 was goddamn awesome and I still need to play FF13 to see if it's really as bad as everyone says. I'm probably never gonna play 11 and 14 because I hate everything with the letters M, M and O in it. P.S. Hate me all you want but I found FF10-2 to be a way better game than FF10 (mainly because of the gameplay) -
