OCR03037 - Pokémon Red Version 'Dream Eater Mix'
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Boy did Emblem180 nail this - I don't necessarily dislike any of the elements here, but I certainly don't love them either - until THIS. Wow!!! What a great work here - talk about being more than the sum of your parts! Congrats!! -
OCR02895 - Final Fantasy VII "Captain of the Skies"

I just came here after being linked through A Legacy Forgotten (FF VI). Who is this artist?? This is another incredible work; the distinctive flavor of Cid comes right through, but in such a unique way - that's two songs in a row that I thought I knew by heart and each remix caught me in ways I had never imagined. The section 1:00-1:25 sounds like it's out of The Last Of Us - I mean that as an extremely high compliment - and the mix continually evolves without ever getting a static "now a big part, now a little part" kind of feel. (2:15-2:45 is particularly impressive for this.) And again, another gorgeous ending!?!? Wow, am I impressed!! -
OCR03034 - Final Fantasy VI 'A Legacy Forgotten'

If you ever loved Terra's Theme, but might have been worn out by the many times you've heard it since, this is the one to give a listen. Gods, I love how this has such a distinctive character that sort of wisps around the true theme, building and falling back in such a natural manner that it seems like nothing more than a breath of snowy wind across the tundra. A special props for those who provided such gorgeous flute work live. And with that ending?? Get. This. Mix. -
OCR03031 - Final Fantasy VI 'Savage Triumph'
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This mix is a dizzying experience. Just because it wasn't my first choice of genre (hell, what genre is this even??) doesn't mean I don't like it. I think the mix actually gets better/more rockin as it goes along. 'Controlled chaos' is a great term. It's a weird, pounding ride with lots of pretty lights in all directions, but it's a good ride. -
Maybe I scared people away with my last posting - but since it, I've heard multiple people's 'remix' versions of this song on Youtube, including by some artists I follow, and none of them even approach this remix. nckmusic, be proud - you crushed this.

OCR03025 - Final Fantasy VI 'Strange World'
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I am really, really impressed with the ambient, slowly changing nature of this song. This completely held my interest, not by jumping back and forth wildly, but by slowly morphing into something of such unique direction. I truly think the build from 3:00-3:50 is one of the more impressive sections, as I was just thinking the song couldn't go in any other directions and wow! I'll also chime in that I felt the Pink Floyd feel, but more than that, I'm SO impressed that this song accomplished such depth and malleability in what is one of the least deep (in my opinion) source tunes. WELL DONE WILLROCK! This was way outside most people's creativity to do!! -
OCR03022 - Final Fantasy VI 'The Nightmare Oath'
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow, is this impressive!! It seems to me that not only is this an amazing use of vocals, it's an amazing use of completely male vocals, which seems (to me at least) to be a rare and amazing combination. I can't believe how well it works. Between that and the amazing mix of flute and rocking bass, every time I think that I've adjusted to a 'soft' or 'hard' feel, the mix flips it on me. I love it!!! BRAVO, all around!! -
I'd like to tell a story about how OCRemix, and this song, made my life so much better. Only one week ago I saw this song posted on OCRemix, and clicked. At this point, I had never heard of the game 'The Last Of Us', and all I knew was this song, the first two lines of djpretzel's excellently described stance of the game, and the entrancing cover art (that the creators fought like hell to keep against publisher pressure to only have the male lead on it!). And then I listened to this song, and it was beautifully haunting. Melodic, yet poignant. It seemed obvious to me that nckmusic had really cared about this. I hadn't played a video game in over two years. But something about this felt special. I went and got it for the PS3. A week later, I am still enraptured, devastated, enlightened, and in deep thought. What an experience, what a moving and powerful story. To characterize it as a video game or, worse, a zombie/shooter is simultaneously not incorrect and yet such an injustice to the power and amazement of what the experience is. And through it all, that music. My heavens, that music - in different forms and different ways, the throughline of the entire story. And now, on the other side of having completed The Last Of Us, I now have even more appreciation for nckmusic's work here. The evocative feel of the original source is now given even more power and a different, yet gentle, touch. The entire section from 2:48-4:10 (especially 3:30-3:57!! The melodies!! The sirens!!) could only have been written by someone who truly experienced the loneliness and desperation of the game, and of the source music. For those of you who liked this song but didn't know the game, get it. For those of you who knew the game but haven't listened to this remix, listen to it. The two are meant for each other like few remixes I"ve heard.

OCR02989 - Final Fantasy VI "Toxic"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Could not agree more - the work done with a tough source is incredible. The 1:49 section really is kicking and fun with the clipped melody coming through, and I found myself enjoying this song a number of times despite the fact that I don't particularly like the OST version of the song in the first place. Truly, in some ways, there's no better compliment. -
OCR02977 - Final Fantasy X "Zanarkand String Quartet"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
There is something to be said for purity, and this is it and more. If you've played the game - or even if you haven't - do yourself a favor, turn the lights off and listen for three minutes. You'll be transported back to another time. Ah. -
OCR02929 - World of Warcraft "Heart of the Moon"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
DJPretzel nails this - what do you even say to this? The harmonization and beautiful instrumentals are enrapturing, and the flow of this piece is like going down a serene river, replete with bends and turns that keep things fresh and exciting. Of note is a neat difference from the stunning Rose Of May - the lyrics here are non-English, so Kate's voice sort of becomes its own instrument, and mixes even more easily into the gorgeous instrumentals. The effect is something truly special as the song waxes and wanes. A must-listen. -
OCR01964 - Final Fantasy VII "Aire Tam Break"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I've listened to this mix for years, and ran into it again on Roulette. Fishy, just wanted to say that for every compliment or thank you that you've heard, you have another twenty or more people that think the world of your work and have regularly received enjoyment from the effort and care you put into this (and other) mixes. Oh, one last note: the above can be said for many other great artists on OCRemix as well - but I doubt many of them caused so many injuries from hardcore rocking. -
So happy at the effort put into this mix. You can tell someone cared about the source here; it's handled with reverence and the remix highlights it and takes it in great directions without burying it and leaving it behind. Good word, I can't believe how well that jaunty opening meshes so well with that swirling melody from the Face Shrine (one of my favorite tunes from one of my favorite games), and the work done with it around 0:55 is special. The transition into the Shadow Battles is so disarmingly simple I had to listen twice to find it, and the mix of Face Shrine/Ballad of the Wind Fish works so well at 2:25-2:45 I was shaking my head. The only recommendation I would make is ending the song one or two notes earlier in that trail-off - if you do so, it's almost like it's leading into the beginning of the song again - which is no problem to hear again by my reckoning! You've done an honor to a great game!

OCR02960 - Final Fantasy VI "Courage ~ Failure ~ Rosebud"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oh my heavens, I loved this remix!!!! What a unique take and the cut/abrupt/chopped vocals end up being like their own instrument! I love the simplicity and power of the lyrics as well, with their subtle changes. The drop out of parts of the soundscape at certain sections, the changeover 1:15-1:37 (wow!), and the way the mix builds and then hits that FANTASTIC, multi-layered ending.... WOW! Everyone involved in this mix needs to take a bow - I loved it!!! -
OCR02963 - Chrono Trigger "Kingdom of Magic"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This remix is a really enjoyable take on the source - one that I've loved for many years - and somehow, I feel like it's subtle, easy modifications of the original make this MORE enjoyable than some wild take that is different just for the sake of being different. You can tell that this piece was thought of and handled with care. Truly pleasant and heartening. The abrupt ending was the only part that seemed to throw me, but that's easily passable with such a great preceding song. Well done, remixer! -
OCR02937 - Secret of Mana "Mother"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This track, to me, was more than just relaxation; it feels like a walk through a forest, where you notice little bits of life and movement everywhere that you look, if you are willing to look around as you move through. The arrangement has notes for the breaths of wind, the steps on the ground, and the sway of the grasses. Truly evocative, and something worth turning off the lights and just listening. -
Oh my word, this mix is KICKING! I don't know the source well, so I have to go on quality, and this mix HAS IT. I particularly loved - and I mean loved - the little bit of original work sprinkled in, especially at 3:00... it fits so perfectly, it sounds like it was always a part of the source. Man, this mix really gets going! Love it!!!!

OCR02849 - Kirby's Dream Land "Dream Land Dance Party"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Major props - a relatively non-mainstream song off a relatively non-mainstream game, and yet this song absolutely nails it. Impressive mixing and beat here - I dare anyone to listen to this and not have their mood improved. I loved the description, too. What if Kirby decided to bust a move at the end of the game? I think we now know. And my day is better as a result. -
OCR02850 - Final Fantasy V "Boss Key"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
My socks are off and papers are flying around the room! What an AWESOME meld of two sources!! I can't believe how well these came together - the end result is interesting, fresh, and kicks SERIOUS butt. If you even occasionally like hard rock, hard metal, or anything remotely approaching this, check this mix!! Wow! Great job done here - I can't believe this almost went unheard (!!!!!). -
OCR02757 - Final Fantasy VI "Bad Octopus"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I love Fishy's work, so I was willing to give this a try, and now I'm really glad I did. The section around 1:30 is what really turned me on this - it's when the mix really hit me over the head and yelled, "Have fun with this, we're not taking things too seriously here!" and I really began enjoying the zany fun, like a rollercoaster that you give up trying to figure out where it's going and just start enjoying the ride with your hands in the air and spittle flying out of your mouth. Seriously, the section 4:00 to the end had me with a big, beaming smile across my face. That totally sums up the whole experience. Bizarre, unique, and damn fun if you give it a chance. A great (carnival ride) time. -
OCR02746 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "Mythic Mist"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
For something metal, I will say that the first minute doesn't do a whole lot for me, as I get a bit of repetition and the work with the overall structure didn't overwhelm me. But one minute in the mix really kicks up a notch and goes on from there to be a metal version worthy of some of the great Sonic 2 mixes out there - only more hardcore. I think this mix shows promise and potential! -
OCR02743 - Dark Cloud "'Round the Bonfire"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I've never heard the source, but the artist's work with previous sources led me to listen anyway. Glad I did! -
OCR02745 - Final Fantasy X "Mountain Prayer"
DimeTower replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
A soothing mix here! You've picked the two best songs out of FF X (or at least some of the best), and I was pleasantly surprised to see how much your take on this grew on me. It's minimalist, to be sure, but it's FULL minimalist, if that makes any sense. You explore the feel and the tone impressively. It's odd; part of me wants more, more buildup, more instrumentation... but that's what I get with most songs here. The other part of me really applauds what you were able to do by keeping things to the core. A unique and pure take on the source! -
OCR02724 - Final Fantasy VI "The Megiddo Brigade"
DimeTower replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This mix brings to mind a mad scientist, adding parts onto his robot/magic creation, building it up, making it badder, making it crazier, and the thing powering up and beginning to try out its sinister parts and mission of havoc. Devil's Lab, indeed
