  1. Woops, I didn't mean to sound nitpicky with my comments in the other post, just thought you were expecting someone to do that
  2. This is cool! You should try to shorten that silence at the intro Does the intro have any relation with the song by the way (all the section 'til :30)? At 0:57 it'd make more sense to have the piano make a faster trill. The current one sounds odd because it is too slow. Is the fade at 1:04 done using velocities or with the volume fader? I feel it sounds slightly fake... At 1:47 aren't there some timing issues between the piano and horns? The piano section at 2:09 is very cool, gives a nice feeling. The crescendo afterwards is also nice. The section at 2:33 is good, but a little muddy. I feel you should lower the piano volume there, since it's mostly doing ornaments and filler stuff. The instruments that are playing the melody are drowned by the strings and piano. Nice use of the orchestra at 3:03! I like the progressions you used to return to the main theme. I'm not sure but aren't there some timing issues in the following sections too? The piano seems a bit off a few times. Section at 3:50 is cool, nice ending! Overall, the arrangement is very good. I'm not a classical musical expert but I feel the arrangement nails the feel. There are some slight issues with timing and the "realness" of the piano though. Also, some of the more crowded sections are a bit muddy, maybe you can play with panning there to free some space for the main melodies.
  3. Ha! I imagine it less relaxing than Life in the Mines though. Grunty Industries is more of a fast paced and nervous song to me (well actually the song isn't really fast, but the level gives me that impression ).
  4. I'd be interested in claiming Grunty Industries if I'm allowed to remix the theme that plays . I can imagine it being a nice metal song with some robotic/electronic sounds.
  5. I take a different approach apparently. I usually sit down on my keyboards and improvise... and that's how my songs are born! If I'm on a good day I can write a complete song in one go (for example, I'm quite sure I wrote this remix in one go after I learned the notes of the two sources). Of course, I only "write" the piano part that way and then I start imagining the rest of the instruments when I start writing on my DAW. On days that aren't as good I just try write as much as my inspiration lets me and then continue improvising another day until the song is finished. After that, I write the parts one at a time in my DAW but leave most of the mixing until the end.
  6. The Spark Mandrill is ridiculous haha, how does he do that.
  7. I like how this sounds, keeps the feeling of the original nicely. The pad thing you're using bothers me, since it feels like it's off-tempo (I guess it has a slow attack). This is very noticeable at 0:31 where the pad takes a little bit to change to the new chord and it sounds bad. This actually happens for most of the song, but is less noticeable when you have more instruments (1:13 sounds a bit bad because of this too). It may also be a bit conservative, but I think it's fine! Nice work
  8. This one is directed at Liontamer. Did you get my PM about my FFVI song (the one that I asked to be rejected and then resubmitted)? I don't want to be a bother but I think two panel updates have happened since I sent that PM so I'm not sure if the PM ever reached you.
  9. Wait, using one Kontakt application with many instruments inside it is more efficient than using one Kontakt application per instrument? My computer struggles a lot with my projects lately, and maybe that's the reason
  10. Oh ok, I may try it sometime then. Any deadlines for WIPs?
  11. Oh god I really hate when that happens. Changing tempo in the middle of a song always annoys me, even if it isn't hard at all. It always makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong, not sure why Also, like evktalo said, recording live parts can be a chore. I even waste time recording ambient pads when I'm feeling too perfectionist!
  12. Mixing the low end is one of the most painful things ever. I always feel my kick/bass don't sound that great, even after a lot of tweaking. Also, finishing songs. I want to keep tweaking small stuff all the time... Writing the arrangements usually isn't hard for me. However, at times I think some parts of my arrangements are terrible and start re-writing a lot, especially when I'm remixing and I notice that my remix is nothing like the original anymore!
  13. I've always wanted to remix the Master Hand theme for Smash Bros. (N64) but I'm not sure I'm good enough for the project. How are you planning on selecting the people that get in?
  14. That's a better idea. I always felt the scope of this project was way too big at the beggining. Maybe you should try picking one or 2 themes/medleys of each part of the game. Like, - 2 for until you get the Ocarina. - 2 for Deku Swamp. - 2 for Goron Mountain. - 2 for Zora Lake. - 2 for Ikana Canyon. - 1 more for Final Battle?
  15. In The Last Story, include damned motion controls for aiming arrows and magic attacks. In DKCR, remove the blowing mechanic.
  16. Man if the map theme wasn't so absurdly short I'd really try to make a mix out of it... Oh well. If I ever get inspired I'll be sure to attempt to get it into this album!
  17. I hope this isn't the final intro There is an off-key or bad sounding note at 0:04 (and it repeats every time...). I don't think the drums are too loud (well, maybe a bit), but the lead is too quiet. The lead synth is very cool by the way. This sounds very good, clean production. If anything, I wonder how you plan on making a full fledged song from this
  18. The track is pretty good. Hope it gets a good remix (probably not by me though)!
  19. I use AKG K44 headphones. Seems I'm on the low-end but oh well, I didn't have a lot of money when I bought them! They work well though, I can hear everything clearly. I should try other headphones to compare though, but anyway, this works for now.
  20. Super bump! I (finally) reworked this song. I think the samples and mixing are better than the version I submitted to DoD in November. I appreciate any feedback or comment or whatever!
  21. The sample you use at the beggining has a very muddy sound. Try cutting out stuff from the 500Hz range, it should make it sound a bit cleaner. You can also try boosting higher frequencies to make it stand out more. The flute that enters later is very quiet, try raising its volume! The haro-ish sample at the end suffers from the same than the beggining. Cut the 500Hz frequencies, they usually sound bad... The arrangement is pretty. I didn't listen to the source so I don't know how conservative it is though.
  22. If you do a death metal/dubstep mix the world will burn.
  23. I'd to love to do that too! But there isn't much we can't do Thanks for explaining the buss compressor stuff. I'll try it soon!
  24. A limiter right from the beggining? Doesn't it make mixing a bit confusing? What tools do you use to measure RMS? Reaper has some stats plug-ins but they're a bit weird. Thanks for all the answers by the way, this is very interesting!
