OCRA-0009 - Final Fantasy VII: Voices of the Lifestream
Benjamin Briggs replied to zircon's topic in Album Reviews & Comments
holy crap what happened to only releasing a few collab project mixes at a time I will probably check this out when I don't feel too overwhelmed by the prospect of having to listen to 40 billion songs at once... all on the front page -
we need a thread to discuss the serious social implications of ocremix when you're a kid, and you're playing through ocarina of time for the FIRST time, you remember the fucking music you don't just remember the tune and can hum it at will, you remember the EXPERIENCE of playing ocarina of time for the FIRST time... it is such a complexly-ingrained memory that recalling it is one of the most rewarding accomplishments in communication I've ever discovered it's about digging deep inside the almost instinctual part of the brain that holds any given gamer's memories of frustration and anger, redemption and reward, fucking GOOD AND EVIL... finding that part of the brain, scraping your socks on the ground, and shocking the hell out of it with music and don't even get me STARTED on the implications of creativity and real musical expression... it's so deep let's just put it this way: there is a very very good reason I've been remixing for as long as I have... do you guys know that I tried to quit remixing and never come back to the community? well, I did. and I couldn't. I came back, because I love it so damn much just something to think about next time you hear a remix that makes you listen more than once through, I guess ps. anyone willing to actually start a thread about the serious social implications of ocremix? I would totally do it

OCR01611 - Super Mario 64 "Devastation's Doorway"
Benjamin Briggs replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
fantastic this has so many staples of a really great remix... you used the fucking boss theme as the BRIDGE just wow, great great work... it sounds like you could work on sample humanization (sitar, some of the string patterns) and reap some pretty substantial benefits but seriously, phenomenal debut mix -

that was in the VGMix WiP stage, but it's almost an exact replica of the final version (I only worked on this mix thrice) also, about the vinyl ambiance... you have no idea, dude I actually rendered two versions of the song, one with the vinyl and one without, and I listened to them back to back on loop for about 3 nights before releasing this when push came to shove, for me, the payoff of hearing the vinyl effects alongside the pizzicato with that ridiculous lo-fi filter combo was enough for me to leave it in I'm just glad you heard that it was a instrumentational (is that a word?) sacrifice... you're definitely one of the scarce detailed listeners I've found in recent years instrumentational lol -

could it be that it's intentionally missing something? my overall point here is ocremixes are music, and a very strong niche genre at that djpretzel linked to the dictionary.com definition of a big word for "meaningful" in the site mission for a very real reason, and it's my personal opinion that a very large portion of the community doesn't recognize that reason... however, for the sake of site growth and musical expansion, they are welcomed and guided as well as possible (given the dismal number of detailed listeners), and that is an extremely fair trade-off dunno if that makes any sense, but I'm at least glad you took the time to listen in a different mindset... that means a lot to me as a musician bai -

unfortunately ocr remixes aren't exactly things that can just be "taken down" but I mean, if you listened to the greatest remix ever, like the best take on any video game theme you've ever heard in any genre in your entire life, and noticed that it's "missing bass", would that seriously be an instant turn-off for you? you need to give the music you listen to more room to breathe... it's art, whether you agree or not, it's art like, get my point? I'm just saying you're focusing on the wrong aspects of the music I honestly think you would enjoy this release a lot more if you threw out all the preconceptions you have about how the mix was made and what you believe it to be missing, and just listen to it in the context of "I played tetris, I recognize this song, let's see what this musician has to contribute to this" also, I'm not arguing because I think you're wrong, I'm arguing to try and show you HOW to enjoy this remix... because I really think you're just approaching it from an awkward angle if not, ignore me, but at least give it a shot afk -

dude you shouldn't be afraid to post negative criticism, seriously as an interesting side-note, I was always confused about the rampant popularity of this song... so seeing that someone other than myself actually doesn't think it's all that superb is refreshing so thanks for not liking this remix because I was starting to get worried -
