Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Project Chaos - History
DarkeSword replied to k u n g f u c h i c k e n's topic in Projects
As I said on the front page, this will be considered mixed in with Lava Reef sicne they basically sound the same. No, they are not the same; the songs share a continuo line; however, the melodies are different, and they are even listed as separate zones. Excluding Hidden Palace Zone is excluding a very important song in the game. -

Except in the game, it's not Doomsday Zone. It's the Final Boss theme; it happens before you enter Doomsday. That's faulty labelling. -

Christ, I come back today to find three pages of degeneration into bullshittery. The thread has been manually rolled back. It's so funny when n00bs argue. Anyway, sithlord-aku, you need to be fair and equitable when dealing with potential mixers. This is the nature of the project in the manner that you envisioned it, and as such, you have to be consistent accross the board. To everyone else, that's enough of the bullshittery, please. Carry on. -

Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Project Chaos - History

As much as I love S3&K, it's simply too soon after the Sonic 2 project to be starting this. Also, you have no mixers lined up right now. Recruit first, generate serious interest, get some names, and wait. The timing is not good right now, so soon after the official release of a project, especially of a project in the same series of games. [EDIT] After initiating discussion with sithlord-aku, I have decided to reopen this thread, due to an interest shown by mixers in the community. I am still opposed to the timing of this project; however, because the interest is there, it seems viable for the time being. Unlock, leave. -
He works at EA. And yes, I've been talking to him; Star General is almost done; also, I have Beatdrop working on Final Star; he's usually quick about stuff, so I'm not worried about that. As far as a site goes, I need to work on one; I have some really rough sketches sitting around; nothing substantial yet. I have lots of schoolwork (new semester started; I must adjust to my new schedule), so sitting down to do web design is going to take a lot of free time. I will post progress as I make it.

Just want to drop a quick line here; I'm still in, though I've been incredibly busy (not with the Kirby Project, but with real life things like SCHOOL and WORK). I shall endeavor to work on stuff.

Well in this case, he didn't take the original and put drum loops on it; he took an already made song in FLStudio called 'Groundswell' and dropped Quickman on top of it. So its not so much a MIDI rip as it is plagiarism.

OCR01316 - Mega Man Zero 2 "Stranger in the Desert"
DarkeSword replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This isn't really a request board. Also, don't search for Stranger in the Desert; search for Departure from Rockman Zero 2. That's enough posting about where you can get the original, okay? Thank you. -
Holy shit, the original mix was judged by Redifer, Orkybash, and Saunders! WTF!
-
http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=51258 It's groundswell.flp (a demo song from FL) with a Quickman MIDI layered over it. Plagiarism. I can't believe you had the nerve to submit this song after everyone called you on your theivery. NO OVERRIDE

The original song in Megaman Zero 2 is the opening stage music. -
*NO* Ikaruga 'Black Ice (Polar Edit)' *RESUB*
DarkeSword replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
I enjoy the way this piece slowly evolves. The percussion has a lot of nice, subtle nuances thoughout which makes for some good variation. Texture is really nice too; bells, flute, and synthethic sounds all work really well in tandem. I don't hear any bad notes anywhere, either. There are some tastefully used accidentals, but that's about it. The only thing I don't like about this song is that the melodic ideas meander a bit; this is just a small personal gripe though; I would have preferred something stronger, but in this case, it works as an atmospheric mood piece nonetheless. Nice stuff. YES -

Actually it's "For Endless Fight II." -
*NO* Final Fantasy 11 'The Battle for Vana Diel'

Can you put at least a little more effort into this vote? Not asking for a dissertation or anything, but' afk?' Seriously? -
Fair enough; however, I maintain that the simplified melody especially works in the context of this piece; specifically, its clear, unembellished progression serves to anchor the listener amid the more complex gating rhythms. I'll agree to disagree. The percussion isn't the focus of this song. It is used economically to accentuate and enhance what is already a lively song. One really imporant aspect of writing music is knowing when to use silence and rests; the portions of this mix where percussion is not present work well because there are other things happening, like the rhodes and strings harmonic lines. You said the percussion follows the song; that is a strength. It isn't a separate entity vying for attention, tricked out for its own sake; it's an integral part of the mix which fits neatly into the overall soundscape.
-
Timekeeping my ass. I'm sorry, but you can't be serious there. The percussion varies and integrates really well throughout this entire piece. Please listen to the mix again. I'll grant that it isn't tricked out like crazy, but the percussion does more than just keep time. Also, how can the melody be verbatim and dumbed down at the same time? If it's verbatim, its ripped, yet you say its dumbed down, which means it's been changed. Why is simplifying a melody to work in the context of the style of the piece written off as dumbing it down? It's called interpretation and adaptation. There is nothing inherently wrong about simplification, especially when a simple, straightforward melody like this is used to contrast the gating accompaniment and comping rhodes.

We're moving along slowly but surely. Only three mixes left; mine, and two from Trenthian. We shall endeavor. In the meantime, I would like everyone to upload a wave master of their mix to herograw's FTP space, so that when album release time comes, I'll be able to create the wav torrents and encode everything consistently across the board. Here is the connection info: Much thanks. My track, Aviator Soul (Theme of Great Ace) is complete, and is only awaiting minor tweaks. http://shariqansari.com/great-ace.mp3 Comments on levels and balance are appreciated.

HAHA the original is hilarious. As for the mix, I like the groove. It's got a really deep-yet-floaty sound to it too. Piano works well over everything else. I get the feeling though that there might be too much reverb; the piece is lacking in clarity. The low end gets filled up with 'verb; could use some more higher freqs. Also, the song is a bit short. I think this song has a lot of good things going for it, but there's a lack of development and some clarity issues. I'm going to say NO (resub).

You really need to learn how to use those detache strings better man. They sound ridiculously mechanical and dry. Also, this whole thing is kind of loud. Lacks balance. Arrangement is pretty in your face for a lot of the first half. Low strings are still pervasively loud though; they're droning. Lots of mastering issues. NO

*NO* Legend of Zelda 3 'Autumn Leaves Kakariko'
DarkeSword replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Bleh, you shouldn't have used your laptop! There's this annoying ringing sound when the mid-range notes play! Aside from that I'm having a really really difficult time hearing Kakariko Village in this song. Maybe there's too much variation? It's unrecognizable. I can't find it. The piano playing is really awesome though. NO -
OCR01330 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'The Haunted Train Disco'
DarkeSword replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Is it just me or does this sound like Magus's Theme? Anyway, its a no brainer here. Nice beats with a really chill, spooky soundscape. This piece has a great flow; the sections weave together really nicely. Good transitions. YES -
OCR01323 - *YES* Space Harrier 'Limitless Skies'
DarkeSword replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I like it! Pretty good variation throughout the piece. Nice change-ups. Guitar could sound a bit cleaner (more high end?) but that's more of a personal gripe. Nice playing, nice balance, nice arrangement. Nice work. YES -
*NO* Mega Man Battle Network 2 'Full Power'
DarkeSword replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
OMG ITS CODA!! DUDE!! You didn't tell me you submitted a mix to OCR. Meh, well. As for the mix, I'm gonna have to say NO, because you said it yourself, it's a MIDI, and even though you tweaked it, the production still doesn't cut it. Also, the arrangement of the original Megaman theme along with the Battle Network music feels really disjointed and doesn't work at all. Transitions need lots of work. Anyway, I've been telling you for years you should get better music software. I've heard your other stuff; you're a talented guy. It's time to make the jump, dude. -
OCR01340 - *YES* Seiken Densetsu 3 'Path-ology'
DarkeSword replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Groovy. Nice use of delay on the violin. It fills up the soundscape without filling my ears in a bad way. Sounds really mesh well together. That lead that comes in around 1:30 is kind of annoying. Really annoying. Oh good it went away. Violin stuff is really nice; great texture. I wish there was some more variation in this piece, but it's good enough and there's a nice soundscape. YES (borderline)
