  1. I‘m impressed at the directions this thread took. To bring us back on track though, I think we can all agree on one thing when looking at a remix of this kind of flavour: Any form of words, lyrics, poetry, and sentences, with or without entertaining expression, vulgar or fluffy, humorous or serious, are more than just letters fused together. They contain a power, gigantic or small, that can either build or destroy something. And of course, profanity's purpose is only a back-up move to make something or someone spitting those words more powerful than everything else but in reality displays how weak and hurt people really are. The power of words causes controversy that does not sleep, praise that leaves a listener begging for more, dismissal that will help someone move on, and violent opposition that proclaims what the opposing party believes as truth worth dying for. This mix is no different. If words, songs, essays, profanity, and lyrics were just letters on paper or literally audible evaporated spit, and yet they do not communicate something powerful (positive or negative), which in fact they ALWAYS DO, ALL rap/lyrical remixes would NEVER exist on OCR, djpretzel would never post a disclaimer in his description, and this thread will be pretty much dead quiet. I may even include this post in future commentary if I decide to actually submit a remix with vocals here (which would probably be highly unlikely).
  2. This song is...well, strange but c.mon it's the Mario Theme here! So allow me to review this one. A generic Genesis FM-style opening gives us the signature that Mario fans know and love with some bell-ish synths. Then we're launched into a groovy electro funk major/minor session with some really funny lead sounds that are found in a vocal-less auto-tuned song or a West Coast rap rather than in electro funk. I especially like the bits after 1:50 where the two leads play off each other. The breakdown with the glockens is cool, just could use an extra instrument, but it sounds okay. Perhaps the sound effects in that section were supposed to lead us into the "death" of Mario or Luigi...I'll have to listen to it a few more times. On a side note, you could have ripped high quality sound effects from Tony Thai's fakegame.ftm file and did some editing in FamiTracker. Plus you could mess around with them too to make something really quirky and novel. Fami's a fairly easy program to use if you haven't done so, and since this was done effeciently, it won't hurt your time constraints. 9/10 And now, since I have no real great conclusion for a song based on awesome-ness, I shall quote the chipper passionate voice of Charles Martinet in my head as he says "Thank you so much for a playing my song."
  3. Well at least your expectations were a quest for pure hip-hop.
  4. Which is why we need to take creativity and novelty in music seriously, guys. Giving feedback is all about helping an artist grow, even if the feedback is negative. I can sadly say though, I've only grown from hateful critique. Enough said. Believe me, dude, I tried before 2004, but the attempt to chill out left me with a whole high school who hates me and a restraining order. Essentially why I turn to so-called religion.
  5. You never cease to offend me when I only want to help lead emerging and potentially good artists in the right direction with my reviews. That seperates the Padawan from the Jedi: 1. I linked sources (some removed) of other great rap songs that are way better than mine. You obviously never read the full review. 2. If you didn't have a grudge with me and you can actually handle critisism, you wouldn't blow up like this. 3. It really would have been better to PM me next time. The above post is reported. Deal's off. If you reply or even quote any of our discussion since my review, I will report those posts too. Like I said, I tried to be tolerant, and I did follow djpretzel's instructions as to expressing my opinions freely thinking you'd be better at your game. If I did not do so, he will deal with me personally and appropriately unlike you, and you wonder why I'm made an ass of whenever we chat. EDIT: I also edited my review so that we won't have to continue this conversation any further than here.
  6. Listened to the preview: this is going to be epic!
  7. I'll make you a deal, Cammisa. I learn your name properly and leave your stuff alone, and you release a song or even send me a link personally of a song that you poured your heart into that has tangible meaning behind it with a good sense of inspiration. I'll bet if it got exposure, you'd have more hits on your hands then this song. Seriously, I'd like to help you out here. And the reason I am "pissy" is because I've actually heard with my own two physical ears how poor and not so FUN music generically has gotten for all those years I've been only occasionally so-called "shitting" on yours (it's called comparing U2 to Nickleback/Matchbox20 to Carrie Underwood/Screwball to Justin Timberlake yeah bad examples but don't blame me). Seriously, we're all on the same level, so quit complaining, drop the grudge, build a bridge, and get over yourself as I was defending REAL hip-hop itself most of the review. Great musicians will always get critisism. It's part of success, so suck it up.
  8. Not my thing. I'm not sure why I'm still listening to Joe Cam after all these years.
  9. He who finds a wife finds a good thing. A winner is you. Congratulations!
  10. Hmm, this one's kind of wierd. Then again, I've always misunderstood Capcom's methods of reviving retro games (especially the switch from PS1 32-bit to 8-bit on the Wii for the original series while in other series, ony the eye candy gets better unless it's the Megaman Zero series). It's almost as if they stole Nintendo's proto-type idea of a game with Mario using Kirby's powers.
  11. Donkey Kong Country. I remember putting a tape-recorder in front of the TV speaker and pausing the game just to record the music. I then started listening to it and a friend walks by and insultingly asks, "Why are you listening to Nintendo?" I'll be he's gonna eat those words if he ever comes across this site.
  12. A hack called "Huck Dunt!" for the NES.
  13. VGMix had its time. It's time virt closed the door and moved on.
  14. In terms of helping you VST and soundfont wise since Fruity supports both, this place sports quality for almost anything you need: http://www.flstudiomusic.com/
  15. Wow...I don't know what to say. I'm a huge DKC2 fan, and dismissed any game after playing the repetitive and very childish Donkey Kong 64 (although Diddy still had some of the coolness factor in that game). This game may be the thing after Super Mario Galaxy 2 to get me buying a Wii. The feel of the game is very impressive and is what the Kongs would have experienced if we had the technology we have now back in '94.
  16. Thanks for sharing, Zircon. I think my classmates in film production and computer programming will appreciate this highly. Never though virt would offer anything for licensing unless the source was repuatble. This is a good idea, dude. I'll mention it next year to my proffessors as it will make a great investment for my college course material.
  17. There's lots of variety in here. Glad you could include some chiptune patches. DUUUUWUBWUUBWUUBWUUBWUUBWUUUUUBSTEP!
  18. A great lesson to learn...
  19. What about original albums by the artist?
  20. Why wasn't this posted earlier?! This is one of my favorite electro-house tracks by the man himself! So to begin my review, not even two seconds into this club mix of "Within the Giant" and I'm sucked in to give it a 10/10. The reason why is the opening chord for that pad goes very well with the actual "source-ish" sounding effect. The 303 arpeggios sound generic but that's what keeps the track grooving. I wasn't a big fan of the bell leads, but once the detuned saw comes in with the main melody after a group of whirling synthetic winds usher it in, I'm on the Bridge to Eternity. Bottom line: The source is recognizable, the synth patches are excellent, the arrangement is beyond superb and doesn't get boring, it has a groove. What negative thing can I say about it?! Listen to this track! THIS is what OC Remix is all about!
  21. Hey guys! Not sure how GeckoYamori will react if he hasn't seen this already. But KVR member DrWashington just released a huge collection of Megadrive (or Sega Genesis) sounds in a zip featuring OPM files to import in VOPM: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ynnygzowyzw/2612org OPMs.zip This thing is EPIC! Now with a PSG VST on top, you have potential to make some pretty slick Sega-ish tracks (or tweak presets to make your own). ---
  22. Here's my full review as promised. Willrock is an interesting character. He takes alot of genres to different novel levels in his music. This one's more of a rock that's more of a groove than a smack in the face which is a nice switch. There's definately Castlevania sound and a bit of Zelda LA's Tal Tal Mountain at 0:26. The 303-ish bass is an interesting insert with the organ and a kind of chiptunish sound for the bass. I like the lead synth at 1:04 as it's got a very saxy (or sexy) kind of sound that works well with the organ and synth basslines. At 1:39, things get going good in terms of the arrangement and a solo guitar 1:52 really brings out the emotion of the entire feel of Mario having a hard time in the castle. 2:45 and onward though, I just couldn't get into it, but at the ending is where a good smackdown comes in as well as the snare/crash combination which works as a superb move. To conclude for some odd reason, this isn't something I'd have on repeat over and over. It just doesn't appeal to me even though synth rock is a beautiful genre, especially if you did a Mario track with a Castlevania type sound. I guess I'm just used to Konami making my pulse go during an epic 2D level while listening to a great track. What I'll do is give a 8/10 since it's got some great arrangement qualities as well as excellent instrument choices, however, I'd love to hear more of Willrock's work before I give better reviews on his stuff. 8/10
  23. Like I said, it really depends on how the sampling or graphic editing is done.
