  1. If you mean it sounds smooth as in the sounds are "cold" and very crystal-clear, that's good for me. I need a cold-sounding synth to complement my Alesis Micron.
  2. If Doomsday finishes the ending, then my next update will likely be the final version of this mix.
  3. I didn't know that Concorde Dawn used FL. You can take the sliced drum loop approach, or build them from scratch. You probably know how to nail down the 2-step beat already. The extra hi-hats are called ghost hits. Aside from changing velocity and shuffle, some beats vary the pitch in the hats. You might want to treat them as if you're trying to play a simple melody, but don't vary the pitch way too much.
  4. Hey Doomsday, those new drum sounds go great in the beginning. I agree with Avaris that something feels a bit off in the buildup and breakdown with the drums. Overall there seems to be a bit more thin-sounding than I expected and it's not doing a good job of keeping the energy for long. Check your PM to see exactly what I mean. Good job in extending the second breakdown. I can really build on this. So overall, there are some good ideas here, but it's like, for every two steps forward we take one step back. But I guess that this is just part of the nature of collabs.
  5. Is it really more of a groovebox loaded with features? Some say it's got this expensive (but great) groovebox feel, despite it having a keyboard. I've only tried out the Electribes and Akai MPCs. Maybe it's a cheaper alternative to buying a Virus and Electribe ESX- kill two birds with one stone.
  6. Dibs on the XK-6 keyboard. Anyways, here are some things on my wishlist: - M-Audio 2496 or E-MU 0404 (looking to get a deal with software packages) - Ableton Live 5 - Korg Electribe ESX - Some kind of cold, digital sounding synth to complement my Alesis Micron. Like a roland JP-8080 or Virus TI (I wish)
  7. While I can see how noobs will abuse FL Studio, it's not a program to scoff at. The correct question new remixers should be asking themselves is, "Which program(s) go best with my working habits?" I've tried Ableton Live, Reason, Cubase, and a few more and they all have their pros and cons. For example, I find building whole songs by patterns more intuitive in Live than in FL. At its core, FL Studio is really a software groovebox. When I first used Fruity Loops 2.5 that's what it actually was. No Piano Roll, no big VST support, just a bunch of buttons representing 16th notes and I think this is why it's so intuitive to noobs. I owned a Korg Electribe and it works in almost the same way as this early FL. Later I found it to be too limiting for my needs, but I was able to kick out some nice tunes before first opening the instruction manual. So really, just use what you feel gets your ideas from your head to the speakers the easiest. And there's no shame in using several programs if you need to compromise a bit.
  8. I was just wondering where Doomsday was on this track. Well, I can't wait to get it back from him, and hear how the drums improved. The last thread I recall someone saying it sounds like music from Ridge Racer 4. What a compliment, and now I actually am trying to use "Lucid Rhythms" for ideas
  9. I have a hardware synth set to play notes on FL, so I can play any instrument on FL with the synth keyboard. But I can't do the opposite. Any patterns played on FL don't seem to send midi signals back to the keyboard. I already checked the volume, and the midi control mode it both plays sound and receives midi signals. So kind of a noob at this. Does the port number matter? My keyboard has a setting for midi channels, but not ports.
  10. I just added an Alesis Micron to my set up, two days ago. Neat little machine.
  11. Also, know that "main automation" pattern that shows up in every new file? This is what it's best used for. Keep "global" changes and effects in their own automation patterns. Like Splunkle said, you don't want to mix two automations of the same parameter, the results can be unpredictable. But I wonder what really happens...do automations in the top patterns take higher precedence over the patterns below it? Hmmm, the record feature might help me find out.
  12. Nice. One of my favorites from the project. Xenon's right about the groove changing on this one. What first sounds like an Asian/Bossa Nova hybrid evolves into breaks and ambient. This mix is silky smooth. I wish it didn't cut off abruptly at the last pad, but no matter.
  13. Call it "Ambitious Amphibious". It's a better descriptor for Frog, I think.
  14. DJ Forums has a couple of nice tutorials for choosing a turntable and maintaining/cleaning it. What is your budget? Don't skimp on purchases. From the general consensus I got from other DJs on-and off-line, stay away from the Gemini and American DJ brands. And under any circumstances don't get belt-drive tables. The belt snaps easily with the continuous stress caused by holding and moving the platter. Buying better turntables helps in learning your skills and you won't outgrow them quick. Technics, Numark and Stanton are good brands to start out with. Techs are expensive due to their great reputation, but you can find used ones for $250 each. They also keep their resale value which is great if it turns out you don't want to mix/scratch anymore and want to sell them.
  15. Thanks for this! I recently got a pair of vinyl turntables and this'll help me immensly. Nice, what brand(s)? I own a Technics sl-1210 and Stanton str8-100, and they're both pretty solid.
  16. The older topic has been at 3 pages so I'm hoping there's still some interest in this WIP. At last I have a new temporary host to put my work up. As the tale goes, Doomsday started working on a Guardia Forest mix and one day I came along and decided to join in. We took the song to greater lenghts, and now it's almost done. Any suggestions to add new things? --- Oct 22 update I added a lot of stuff to the final version. YEAH IT'S HERE! There's a new section after the slow breaks, which is basically all my ideas. Now I say this remix is "practically done" because at this point there won't be any more significant additions. 95% of what you hear will be in the submitted version. Other than that the ending will be worked on, and it will be quick. Yeah, I could've polished up the ending but didn't want to keep you guys waiting any longer. First WIP (when it was just Doomsday) (BROKEN) Current Version (ALSO BROKEN) 2008 Version - This actually started in mid-2007 after taking in what the judges told me I should improve. There were no major changes to the composition, only changes in sound mixing. Also note the lack of drums after 4:16- it's not supposed to be like that, but I'm too lazy right now to add them and render later.
  17. I was also thinking about buying a small "el cheepo" Behringer mixer (or a Tapco) before reading tgfoo's post, but now, I'm not too sure. Well, I guess $99 is better spent on an interface than a mixer. I'm more concerned about getting good samples/intstruments than a good mixer right now.
  18. Bumping up this thread. I'm as old as Arglebargle but I got into playing music sooner. Took piano lessons at 10, then didn't do much for a long time, until 2001. Before using FL 2.7 I was using trackers, which were resource friendly for the old 100mhz Pentium I used to have.
  19. http://www.djforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=72 I dunno if anyone around here does this, but I would check there first.
  20. If you're using Wavetraveler you might want to check this out. http://www.ttmethod.com/ This is meant for DJs with actual turntables, but this visual form of notation can be easily transferred over to making patterns with Wavetraveler.
  21. Buzzing noise, you say? Would it be a gradual fading in and out kind of noise? If so, you're probably hearing the effect of a demo version of a VSTi. You probably have so many effects and generators, like you said, that you might have overlooked one. It might be FL Slayer 2, believe it or not. I know for a fact that the demo version purposely adds that buzzing noise. A lot of demo sound generators I've tried do similar things, like adding noises, fading out the instrument volume, etc.
  22. Okay, so I see that some keyboard models are a bit sketchy when it comes to working with this cable. Should I worry about using midi-to-USB cables with 20 year old synths? I guess it's irrelevant since midi is supposed to be universal, so as long as it can send midi signals I should probably be fine, right?
  23. Most of those were done in late 2004 I believe, and if he was still around to join the project back then, he'd have more than enough time to improve his skills as we went along. Well, I just wanted to point out this curiosity to others.
