  1. The only way to see the year on the Zen for any track is to bring up a menu and display the track info. Said displayed info is woefully deficient: only the Track #, Title, Artist, Album, Genre, Year, Duration, Play Count, and estimated Encoding. If Kizyr is displaying track info and the year is missing, that is weird. I'll try it with my M and W in a bit. EDIT: All the track info is displayed properly, even the year, and especially the ReMix #/Track # (e.g. "Aquatic Interlude" displays as Track #739). That goes for the Vision M and the Vision W.

  3. I wonder about a couple of my invites; I don't do much vetting there except to see whether it's one of those "time-share" or "make-money-at-home" channels. One user whose name escapes me has ripped a few of mine and of others' MIDIs and posted videos, and the only credit is deep in the channel's description. Better than nothing, I suppose. Still, I might come up with a plan for calling attention to the original MIDI transcribers.
  4. "Everyone" is a strong word. I hate to bring up how much of a senior citizen I am once again, but I lived through the whole thing (even the Latin Freestyle explosion), and of course I'm with you on the "corn and cheese" aspect, but it didn't define the decade then, and it's disappointing to sometimes see that defining it now. I was aware of most of the artists you mentioned, and if that's what you liked, those should've been your recommendations; they weren't that obscure. My recommendations are dead serious: I brought up Rap and R&B artists... those weren't much more above ground back then. I don't think it's on anywhere; I should upload it.   7. Last week was "pure music" week for me, and I've been progressing. I surprised myself with some interesting chord progressions, and I've found a good brush kit sound. I like where my track is going.

Obviously, unless it's your own track, there's no way of knowing exactly how many disparate sounds are used in a song, not even mentioning double-tracking, added delays and overdubbing, and especially things such as sampling from a source that was already densely layered on its own. I do wonder if any artists here take after Phil Spector. , that is, not... well... you know.But yeah, it's all about arrangement. "Good" examples include whole string sections playing notes either in chords or in octaves; "noise" examples include 95% of all those amateurish "mashups" on Youtube.

No one's mentioned that you can isolate each of the eight sound channels in an SNES chiptune through the Winamp/Chipamp plugin (each will likely be monophonic) and export to .WAV if you wish to study further. Skip the MIDI. Can't be difficult to transcribe from there, but I don't know the level of laziness we're talking about. EDIT: TA-DA! I even did all the work for you.   10. I'm more used to the "pidgin" (I believe it's called), but I'm already familiar with the "pinyin" from the subtitles in the movies I watch, so it's all good, and it's much appreciated.

  12. A lot of these folks turned out to be veterans of gaming and its music, like myself in many ways. Having vgmusic's founder (Mike Newman) in the crowd was the biggest indicator; I'm glad to have finally met the guy.

  14. Sorry I couldn't make the shindig; I didn't have my flak-jacket. I only just managed to find time to explain the situation with "Minds" from my end, for those who kept wondering what happened, in the track's thread.
  15. Sorry not to comment earlier; I needed time for a full explanation. This is another of those things overlooked by me until it was too late. I added what I thought was a bit of compression/limiting to the track because Hale's choruses seemed a bit loud to me, but it sounded later as if the entire thing went overboard. "Later" refers to when I started on the trailer a few weeks ago, and heard all the tracks. I said to myself, "wha happa?!?" I submitted the track in December: at the time Taucer was fine with it, and all I heard from Hale was "I barely hear the kick." I wish I heard more: we considered help on the mastering before I finished, but my stubborn streak told me I can't get the experience I need on this sort of thing unless I see it through myself. I can and have done better. I wanted to work on it one more time before release, but thought it too late to say something. I never expected a posting, much less a DP. I knew this was strong enough for OCR, but I really was expecting a "resub." Too late for the album, but if Hale still has his chorus vocals lying around, I really, really would like to try to remove the word "shame" from discussion of this track, and perhaps update for OCR if it's allowed. It makes my collab-mates look a bit bad, and it's my job to make it so that only I look bad.
  16. Just wanted to point out that since the "vocals" thing is one of the oldest and dumbest arguments we've had in this community, it's not as if that HASN'T been considered. Mandarin lyrics are only "risky" to non-Mandarin speakers who don't like what they don't expect. It's up to the listener to decide how successful it was, but if someone argues that it's an inherently bad idea, then we've got a problem. I worry about the diversity of our sound being discouraged from some of these comments; the Fat Man starts to look like one of only five people who "get" what we do here.
  17. Truth: I found out the hard way when I tried and kept discovering I couldn't work a piano into a mix, instead having to work a mix around it. And if Joren de Bruin's around, whatever piano was used in "Simian Soirée," either real or sampled, I really want it.
  18. Like I told Amy a while back, after watching Chang Cheh's Shaw Bros. kung fu classics in their original dubs countless times, I would've recognized the language right away. Fun fact: they said "bu guo" a lot in those films, which is why in the lazy English dubs you heard characters say "but still" so many times. I have to offer my standout moments on this album when I have time, but I do recall having Talking Heads flashbacks listening to "Backwards Room."

  20. Props to GaMeBoX, because I loved his "Robotnik Radio." And since the last week off I had didn't get me back into music-making (mostly because of videos), I must try again next week when I'm off and getting ready for PAX East. Interestingly enough, I had a brainstorm when I saw GaMeBoX and halc and Willrock in the artist lineup today, and I'm taking my WIP in a new direction more consistent with their sound. I may end up with real avant-garde bossa nova.
  21. The whole "no vocals" opinion has been done to death, and it still doesn't make sense, except in a context of irrational prejudice. Not a single person on this planet can sing well and offer good lyrics!? That's my peeve. VGM in the era before Redbook had almost no vocals simply because it couldn't be done, not because that was the rule. The voice is an instrument, as much or as little an important part of a piece of music as anything else. It's always up to the composer(s) and artist(s), not the listener. That said, in the interest of studying and appreciating a song's construction, I would love instrumentals as a supplement, NOT as a replacement. Now that I'm out of the context of preparing a trailer, it's time for me to have a listen.
